Something that really should be an April fools joke but isn't.

The stupidity is amazing. Not only that, you can't attribute it to any one source.
Parks said the worst risk he ever heard of during a drug trial was the possibility of fainting from low blood sugar. He wasn't worried. "They have I.V.'s," Parks said, referring to intravenous fluids. "They can bring you back."
So the drug decreased serotonin activity in her brain which is naturally very low when a person is fanatically religious... sad thing to happen.
Johnson believed that faith would protect her — faith that God had led her down a path to $7,000, that other people at the Bible college wouldn't participate in an unsafe study, that a company as huge as Eli Lilly would not let anything happen to her.
I'm sorry, but isn't the point of such a study to find out what happens when more-or-less normal people are exposed?

    Yeesh.

and WHAT pray tell, is THAT supposed to mean Sanfam?

The study looks for people in perfect health, and she was.

She had a reaction to the pills, big deal. I'm trying to figure out why this needed a four page paper on it. It SHOULD proove the drug is NOT worthy of FDA approval.

    bah.

    fanatically religious...thats the key.
She certainly didn't sound fanatical. She wanted to goto Bible college, so she went. She wanted a Christain boyfriend. Reasonable. I doubt a relationship between a christain and an aethist could work.

She needed cash, saw a way, and thanked God for it in her diaries. Seems reasonable. I would do the same thing.

any of this fanatical? Not at all. Fanatical is blowing up people that think differently.

One study of only 15 people prooves nothing, one way or another. The Drug is the cause of her death, not her religion.

    "Fanaticism" is all pretty relative.

I live in a place that was untill about 50 years ago, pretty much run by the church, I live in a rather heavily protestant town, and I have never met anyone like that.

    "Fanaticism" is all pretty relative.
I definitely must agree. And what I meant is that low serotonin activity has a connection to powerful religious experiences, which really aren't "a hobby" of the more or less secular masses.

Of course there is a great difference between simple holy rollers and religious fanatics who are acting dangerously towards others (or themselves), but the point was that this girl still had to had low serotonin levels before the drug was given - otherwise the story probably wouldn't have had such a tragic ending.

yes, but I doubt religion was the cause of low seratonin levels... ;)

Why not? Low serotonin levels cause fear and feeling of helplessness... and if you're a prehistoric human ancestor, what do you need to get mentally stronger if not a god?

Ahem, actually she didn't want to go to bible school, the Lord told her to.
And there are plenty of great people out there who arn't atheist or christian.

I was criticizing her friends for assuming these tests are designed to be safe. Saying that a test to identify the effects of what could be a dangerous new drug is in any way, shape, or form safe os just ignorant. You're risking your life for money, and should fully know that you're not going to be protected. Last I heard, you had to sign multiple consent forms before being admitted for any testing. For all the company knows, it could transform her into a giant slug who breathes bagels. As long as they let her know about that possibility, they're safe from prosecution.

Also, with *ANY* Drug, there will be limited cases of severe variations in effects. Also, the cause of this specific suicide appeared to be her being taken off the drug too quickly, Though that method has been improved.

she felt led to goto bible college, but that also dictates a WANT in there.

and yes, your second statement is true, my point was that just because she wrote in her journal that her boyfriend was a christain doesn't mean she was fanatical.
