you guys ever hear about that theory that the dark ages were caused by a meteor hitting the earth?
Yeah, I believe there was a special on TLC or DSCVRY Channel about historic impacts, and they had a segment on that event.

It's clear there was an event during that time, whether it caused it is another thing...

:)

The Holy Roman empire did'nt last very long, only a few decades.
Um, that's not true.

The Holy Roman Empire, or the Gemanic Empire as it first was called lasted from 962 to 1806 in one form or another, and dominated mainland Europe until the Napoleonic era.

I would prefer volcanoes.

Or like Tambora's eruption:

http://volcano.und.nodak.edu/vwdocs/volc_images/southeast_asia/indonesia/tambora.html

Laki/Lakagigar/Skaftar:

Taupo: (whole lake is in volcano's caldera)
http://www.extremescience.com/BiggestVolcano.htm

Americans have also really big one on their own backyard, Yellowstone. (that whole valley is one huge caldera)

There's one other very good: (whole lake is in volcano's caldera)
http://zyx.org/TOBA.html
http://volcano.und.nodak.edu/vwdocs/volc_images/southeast_asia/indonesia/toba.html
http://volcano.und.nodak.edu/vwdocs/vw_hyperexchange/toba.html

Krakatau, Pinatubo, Santorini and St. Helens are small "backyard campfires" compared to Taupo, Toba and Yellowstone.

BTW, one the bases for classification of eruptions is how high ash, lava fragment and pumice column rises.
Does it rise to 30 kilometer, to 50 km or higher than that. :D
In that largest class (Ultraplinian) ash, pumice and flava fragments could cover entire continent.

I've always quite enjoyed knowing that I live on 48 volcanos, and 4 hours drive from the largest volcanic eruption in human history. :)
