Back to The Future

Did u know that in the movie Back to The Future 12 DMC-12 Deloreans were used in all three movies?

Also in the year 1955 there were 4 Deloreans present at one time. The one from 1985 (MARTY), The one from 2015 (Biff), The Alternate 1985 (Doc, Marty), & 1885 (Doc buries the Delorean in 1885).

Just a little factoid for fellow fans of the trilogy. :D

Well, the Doc did say that that date might be some kind of focal point in time. :)

LUCKY BASTARD, was it one from the movie or just a naked DMC12?
  • WORFWORF The Burninator
It was one of the 12 but it looked normal, apparently they removed all the time travel technology :(

    I still want one.

Best part about being on Long Island is the sheer number of Deloreans!

There is a major repair facility/reseller somewhere on the south shore, I believe. And, someone on the north shore is quite the collector. I've seen one driving around syosset on occasion.
  • RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
hm.. i really need some money... get one, and totally customize it (new engine, etc, and of course Time travel equipment ;) )

Funny thing, in the 80's i was in Rhode Island (i think it was in rhode island) and we come around a corner, and there's a frickin Delorean dealership, a whole lot full of the things,

Actually Delorens are not that hard to come by and can be picked up in the US without spending too much money (just check ebay). Main reason is that they really weren't that great of a car. Build quality wasn't great, even for the early eighties and they were a bit under-powered for the type of car they were supposed to be (mid-engine sports car).

  • I saw a Delorean a few years ago at Colorado Springs airport...it stopped briefly in the pickup zone...it was rusting along the bottom of the chassis, and the engine wasn't hitting on all cylinders...when it started moving again, it backfired horribly!! What a wonderful encounter:-)

2700-2800 lbs (I've seen a range of numbers) being pushed by 1 338 horsepower V6? Never gonna work (Though I've seen pages suggesting it was actually 155, which is still dismal))

Plus there's the fact that it was the PRV (Peugeot Volvo Renault) V-6, and that engine, *ESPECIALLY* at that time, was a horrific piece of trash. Not only did it suffer from oil leakage (*Severe* oil leakage), and a head gasket failure was simply part of the expected problems every 25k miles. I'm more familiar with it as it's called within the volvo community, the B28F. Basically, if you've got one of those, the clock is ticking...

Then there's the electrical system. Holy crap, what a heap! The Triumph engineers would be proud. Stalling, random loss of electrical power, spontaneous shorts, random ignition gremlins, etc. It was not something you want in a car.

And to top it off, the car has pretty bad brakes which are also have a real tendency to warp. And the fact that sometimes, the doors wouldn't open. Or close. whoops.

But, that's what modders and collectors are for. Give it a Cadillac Northstar V8 (one of the common conversions), and the crappy engine is gone. Plus, with 300+ horsepower to play with (more can be had with little effort, too), there's no problem with acceleration. A boat no more.

Then, you're left with the electrical system, which is still a pile of crap, but that can be replaced and such.

Where is the Delorean dealership? Ive seen them on ebay for as low $5000 they get bid on real quick! The main Delorean facility is in Houstan, Texas where you can buy the $30,000 kit. THATS WAY OUTTA MY LEAGUE. I want a Delorean to be my first car actually.

I also stumbled upon this little description of the movie. Gave me a little laugh :D

    "Back to the Future
A teen takes a crackpot's DeLorean time machine to 1955 and sees his parents in high school."

Sanfam what engine did they use to make that unique sound in the movie? I know that is not a feature of a standard Delorean.
  • SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
The sound was part of the post-processing work.

But, to cause the wheelspin in the first movie, and give it that nice strong combustion engine sound, it had a Ford 5.0 HO V8 installed. IMHO, every DeLorean should have a V8 or Turbo Six. the PRV engine is just such a crappy POS.
  • The Cabl3 GuyThe Cabl3 Guy Elite Ranger
So that high pitched WEEEEER when it goes in reverse or like its powering up isnt a real sound, they fabricated it?

Its actually the same sound they use for the X-Wings in Star Wars.

  • The Cabl3 GuyThe Cabl3 Guy Elite Ranger
but where does it come from worf is it from the engine on the car? I really need to know someday since I want to get as close a possible to the movie Delorean.

If you put in your DVD or video cassette of BTF, you can clearly hear where the sound comes from:
    the speakers!

    I sometimes use a headset.
  • RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
    headset has speakers too :p
  • SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
The whine soundyou heard was most certainly added in post production by the sound guys. I doubt the car itself made that sound. And I'm unsure if the V8 was used in all of the stage deloreans.

IF i remember correctly they didn't outfit all cars with better motors..

i wouldnt mind one either, tho i dont think id be able to afford the engine upgrade. i wouldnt settle for anything less than a V8:D so i dont think id be affording the insurance either:D
  • The Cabl3 GuyThe Cabl3 Guy Elite Ranger
yeah insurance is ridicules, & I would not pay that kinda insurance even if i was making a million a year. I'd rather run wherever Im gonna go :D
