Sorry, I know everyone hates these little threads, but still: Did anything interesting happen while I was gone? I've been out for the past 2-3 weeks due to a move (always a bitch) and some other, hmmm... sad stuff.

So, has anything else interesting than the basic Spoos 'n Aardvarks -debates come up?

*ducks*

Hey, I was on the other side of the continent (and another country, for a bit), thank you very much! But I don't think Biggles would understand, sence he's just a petty islander

Idiocy is not a learnt thing, but neither is it a genetic thing. It is simply something that jumps from genration to generation as it chooses and latches itself onto certain individuals.

Hehe Schmacker's island is more petty than mine. He lives on an island at least 1.5 times the size of the one I live on, and yet it has a lower population than my city.

Well, Its true. I'm getting very fed up with the John Wayne-Customer is always right-Bigger is better-Its all about me kind of attitude.
  • RandyRandy Master Storyteller
It's unfortunately true that there are Americans like that.

It's also fortunately true that most Americans are not like that.

Read The Nation magazine. Check out my Soapbox Webpage. Look into the ACLU. Look up Common Cause. Remember what happened in Seattle. And the best example for us, of course, is the one JMS set for us by including the ideals he did in his show. There are a lot of us who dislike that attitude as much as you do.

I think that we can safely say that the U.S. is typified by the individualist. That has an up side and a down side. The down side is the kind of self-centered individual you speak of. The up side is original thinking. How do you retain the advantage of original thinking, and still end up with a national identity of people who are caring and do selfless acts? I'm not sure. We're working on it.

The U.S. is a work in progress - an on-going experiment.

I think the reason the Uninvited States gets such a bad rap worldwide is because all of our bad apples seem to travel abroad so much.

That and our foreign policy of butting into other sovereign countries business, when we can't even take care of our own...

It's got to the point internally where many would love to own a few acres out in the boonies somewhere and never see another soul for 50 years, and that would be most acceptable!

    :/
On average, the U.S. consumes higher amounts of practically every resource than any other country on the planet. The average American uses 1,839 cubic meters of water and generates 20.5 metric tons of CO per year - that's 25 times greater than the average Nigerian. In addition, American dependency on the automobile is greater than any other country on Earth. For every 1,000 people, there are 750 cars. Also, 119,366,007,010 gallons of gasoline are consumed each year to fuel our driving habits. Every day, each American adds 4.4 pounds of household garbage to our already crowding land fills. Our demand for wood and forest products has resulted in the loss of 96% of our country's original forests. The U.S. has 5% of the world's population, yet we consume over 25% of the world's resources. If the entire world consumed resources at the average consumption level of a citizen of the U.S., we would need 4 Earths to support us all!
Societies, both at the macro and micro level, don't exist separately from the individual. They are made up of individuals.

The Earth is a work in progress. So is humanity.

DsDetective: The problem with comparing American resource usage with something like Nigerian resource usage is that the average American has a better level of life due to the developed country. The average Nigerian doesn't have the chance to use the sort of resources an average American uses, or to produce the sort of waste levels an average American uses. If you took an average Nigerian and put him in America with all the same things as an average American gets available, he would probably produce the same amount of waste as the average American. The simple fact is that America has more resources available, so the people there are going to use more and have a better quality of life. It isn't them being hugely greedy and taking all they can while the Nigerians are being environmentally conscious and only taking what they need to barely survive.

Thats because all the rich people are bad apples...

Man, how did this topic get off topic is beond me! (I think it was me). I hate it how the few ruin it for the rest of us.

I just felt more at home in Canada while I was there 2 weeks ago.

Hey Randy, you want an example?
ME! Yah, I know, I'm being really cocky, but all of my friends tell me that I need to be more selfish!
  • RandyRandy Master Storyteller
DsDetective: the organizations I mentioned and the people (in Seattle) I mentioned are complaining about the very same. Despite what Biggles said (which I think has some truth to it) I think that in general we are a wasteful lot. I'm just trying to make the point that there's a substantial movement here to change that. I'm sorry that croxis didn't have a good time. As an American I take personal responsibility for that.

Croxis: If you get a chance to visit again, check out San Francisco for cities (it ain’t perfect but it’s got great people), San Rafael just N of San Francisco and Arcata up in Humboldt County (extreme N. Cal.) for towns. Maybe check out some Shakespeare in Asland, Oregon. You'll surely come away with a different opinion.
