Did You Know.......

FX supremo Ron Thornton based the design of the Vorlon fleet on garlic!

Several members of Babylon 5 's production staff have made brief cameo appearances in the show.

In "The Gathering," FX supremo Ron Thornton can be seen twice, once as a lurker and another time on a computer screen, while John lacovelli (complete with beard) can be spotted in the casino.
In "Midnight on the Firing Line," executive producer Douglas Netter appears as President Santiago and costume designer Anne Bruice-Aling plays Santiago's main political rival,

while in "Grail," director of photography John C. Flinn accuses an alien of kidnapping one of his ancestors.

J. Michael Straczynski has vowed not to appear in front of the camera, BUT, In Sleeping in Light, the final episode J. Michael Straczynski appears briefly as the maintenance worker shutting off the station's lights.
Around 20 minutes of footage were cut from Babylon 5's pilot, "The Gathering," to keep it within the 90-minute running time. Missing scenes include

Sinclair confronting an intergalactic drug dealer who tries to take a hostage;
Dr. Kyle revealing that he had to send his new nurse back to Earth after she refused to cooperate in a Minbari birth;
Catherine Sykes accusing Delenn of betraying Sinclair;
and Delenn interrogating Londo about his vote to send Sinclair to the Vorlon homeworld.
Several actors have played different roles in Babylon 5.

Jim Norton appeared as Ombuds Wellington in several first season episodes and played the doomed Markab doctor, Lazarenn, in season two's "Confessions and Lamentations,"

John Vickery portrayed Shai Alit Neroon in "Legacies" and "All Alone in the Night" before portraying Mr. Welles in "The Fall of Night,"
W Morgan Sheppard took the title role in "Soul Hunter" and featured as G'Sten in "The Long Twilight Struggle,"
David Sage played a human in "The Gathering" and a Centauri in "Acts of Sacrifice,"
while Marshall Teague provided some muscle in "Infection," "All Alone in the Night" and "A Day in the Strife."
Prior to playing the Shadows' mysterious emissary, Morden, Ed Wasser appeared in the pilot billed as "Guerra," although J. Michael Straczynski refuses to comment on whether or not the roles are related.
When Louis Turenne. the actor who played Draal in "Voice in the Wilderness," was unavailable to reprise the part in "The Long Twilight Struggle" due to ill-health, Straczynski recast the role and promised Turenne that he would return to the series in an even better part once he regained strength. Thus, in the third season episode "Convictions," he plays Theo.
J. Michael Straczynski is a great fan of the British cult series The Prisoner and has used the show's mast famous line, "Be seeing you." several times in Babylon 5. Unsurprisingly, he would love Prisoner star Patrick MacGoohan to play a guest role in the SF series.

During Babylon 5's first and second seasons, ten episodes were re titled;

"Blood and Thunder"
("Midnight on the Firing Line");
"Amaranth"
("Born to the Purple");
"Carnival!"
("The Parliament of Dreams"),
"A Knife in the Shadows"
("Survivors"),
"Backlash"
("By Any Means Necessary"),
"Raiding Party"
("Signs and Portents")
"The Resurrectionist"
("The Quality of Mercy"),
"Chrysalis, Part II"
("Points of Departure")
"A Trick of the Mind"
("Spider in the Web"),
"Pestilence, Famine and Death" ("Soul Mates").
Unfilmed stories include
"Target Unknown"

"Metaphors and Body Counts,"

"All Our Songs Forgotten"

"The Very Long Night of
Susan Ivanova"

"Expectations"
Anthony Andre, James Earl Jones, Roger Reece and A. Martinez were just some of the actors who were considered for the role of John Sheridan, while John Rhys-Davies was among those who read for Jeffrey Sinclair. Richard Biggs donned a lab coat for his audition as Dr. Stephen Franklin, while Jerry Doyle declared, "I'm auditioning for the role I'm going to get Michael Garibaldi."

The spoof Psi Corps featured during the second season episode. "And Now for a Word," contains a subliminal message: "The Psi Corps is your friend. Trust the Corps."

that G'Kars name was originally going to be spelled Jackarr'?

Star Trek fans are known as Trekkers,
Quantum Leap fans are referred to as Leapers,
but a definitive term for Babylon 5 fans (Babylonians?) has yet to emerge.
J. Michael Straczynski once joked that they should be called the "Incredibly Discerning In-Crowd," which would then be abbreviated to
I. D. I. C. -an acronym used in Star Trek!

The scene in the first Season finale, "Chrysalis,"in which Morgan Clark is appointed as President of the Earth Alliance following the death of Luls Santiago, is based on photos of Lyndon B. Johnson's appointment ceremony In 1964, following the death of John F Kennedy.

Earthdome was originally designed by Stephen Burg for the Gerty Anderson series Space Precinct. "The design didn't get used and he mentioned it to Ron [Thomton ]," explains producer John Copeland. "Ron mentioned he had been looking for a design for Earthdome for a while and asked Steve if he could adapt his design for Babylon 5."

Babylon 5 's special effects are created entirely on computer, without the use of practical models

Babylon 5's space fighter helmets cost $3,000 each to manufacture and the interlocking suit is pumped with water to reduce the internal temperature.

Three different types of Phased Plasma Guns (PPGs) are used during the making of the show: detailed aluminum models (known as "Hero guns"), which feature in close-up shots; plastic models, which are given to extras and used in long shots: and foam rubber versions, which are used when a PPG is either dropped or used to hit someone.

According to propsmaster Mark Walters, Bruce Boxleitner was delighted to learn that Captain Sheridan would receive a new gun during season three. "Bruce was saying, 'When are we going to get bigger guns? We've got these little police guns, but when are we going to get something better?" He didn't know I had already done him a new gun, so I said, "Hey, how about this? Is this big enough for you?"

The preliminary title for Babylon 5 's third season, "I Am Become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds," was initially thought to be grammatically incorrect by the show's fans. Straczynski replied that the phrase "I am become" is perfectly acceptable, if archaic, usage and is also in Tennyson's Ulysses. The final title chosen for year three- "Point of No Return "-was taken from one of the season's most pivotal episodes.

I Michael Straczynski has paid several tributes to Babylon 5 fans during the course of the series.

The location of the space station, Grid Epsilon 470/8/22, is based on the original location of the Babylon 5 topic of GEnie, Page 470, CAT 18, Topic 22.
The inhabitants of the station's undeveloped areas (or Downbelow) were named "lurkers" after computer users who read newsgroup messages but never support them,
and the Earth Alliance ship that tries to seize control of Epsilon 3 In "Voice in the Wilderness" was named the Hyperion after the Babylon 5 site "ftp.hyperion. com."
When the original names for a huge corporation and a mineral were rejected for legal reasons, Straczynski asked fans to suggest possible replacement names via GEnie. They came up with the names Universal Terrorform (featured in ·Mind War") and Q-4 (referred to in "Mind War" and "The Parliament of Dreams ").
The waiter in "The Parliament of Dreams" was named David Strauss after the fan who named Q-40.
In Britain, the first season of Babylon 5 was broadcast before the pilot and "TKO" was initially banned by Channel 4, which eventually broadcast the episode in a late night slot. The network more than made this up to British Babylon 5 fans by hosting the world premiere of the first season finale. "Chrysalis," and the last four episodes of season two

Joseph Michael Straczynski was born on July 17, 1954, and is married to writer/journalist Kathryn Drennan, who wrote the first season episode, "By Any Means Necessary." Although he is widely known as plain old "Joe Straczynski" on the set of Babylon 5, he uses J. Michael Straczynski as his screen name because he feels that it builds up incrementally and looks better in print than Joe Straczynski or Joseph Michael Straczynski. On the Internet, Straczynski insists on being called jms rather than "JMS" because the lowercase version looks friendlier! By an amazing coincidence, both John Sheridan and Jeffrey Sinclair have the same initials as Joe Straczynski.

J. Michael Straczynski has made several references to Babylon 5 in other projects he has worked on. In an episode of Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future entitled "Final Stand," one of the lead characters, Tank, mentions that he comes from the Babylon 5 Genetic Engineering Colony. In another installment, "A Summoning of Thunder, Part 2," Mentor says, "And so it begins," the line that Ambassador Kosh later announces in Babylon 5's first season finale, "Chrysalis." Best of all, in Straczynski 's novel Otherside, published in 1990, one of the characters reveals that Babylon 5 is his very favorite television program!

During the course of the series, J. Michael Straczynski has made several changes to Babylon 5's story arc and has revealed certain elements of the original plotline. Viewers would have learned that Laurel Takashima was part of the conspiracy to kill Ambassador Kosh in "The Gathering," which would have explained how the assassin managed to board Babylon 5 undetected by the station 's scanners. She would also have been involved with the attempted murder of Garibaldi in "Chrysalis." When her character was removed, Straczynski created Garibaldi's aide, Jack (portrayed by Macaulay Bruton), to play the role of would-be assassin. Dr. Kyle would have acted as an unofficial advisor and father figure to Sinclair, while Carolyn Sykes would have run into difficulties with one of the major Earthcorps. Finally, if Sinclair had remained on Babylon 5 during the show's second season, the events in "Revelations" would have provided the basis of the season premiere, "Chrysalis, Part 2," and the Commander would have learned the secret of the Minbari surrender at the Battle of the Line during the season's third episode.

Once he had completed his script for the second season episode "There All the Honor Lies," Peter David sent J. Michael Straczynski a thank you present - teddy bear wearing a shirt with the letters "JS" on the front and "Babearon 5" on the back. Straczynski was so horrified that he wrote and inserted the episode's final scene, so that the bear was deposited into space by Captain Sheridan. Despite his unanticipated trip through the cosmos, the bear is alive and well and currently resides in props-master Mark Walters' cupboard. Walters tried to give the bear back to Straczynski once the episode had been shot, but he would not accept It. Incidentally, the spoof merchandise created for that episode was bought from Babylonian Productions by several members of the crew, including production designer John lacovelli.

Unlike most tie-Ins, the II-part Babylon 5 comic is officially recognized as part of the sane, continuity and was supervised by J. Michael Straczynski, who wrote the first issue, "In Darkness Find Me." The subsequent installments are: &Treason"; "In Harm's Way"; "The Price of Peace"; "Shadows Past and Present"; "Against All Odds"; "Survival the Hard Way": "Silent Enemies": "Duet for Human and Nam in C Sharp"; "Duet for Human and Nam in B Flat"; and "The Psi Cops and You!" Among other things, the comic strip detailed Sinclair and Garibaldi's first adventures on Mars. There are also several Babylon 5 novels available, Including Voices and Blood Oath by John Vomholt. Accusations by Lois Tilton, Clark's Law by Jim Mortimore, The Touch of Your Shadow The Whisper of Your Name by Neal Barrett, Jr., and Betrayals by S .M Stirling.

Babylon 5 is filmed in the 16;9 ratio, as suggested by the show's opening sequence. It is hoped that the series will be broadcast in the widescreen ratio when High-Definition Television (HDTV) becomes available. Although episodes are currently being trimmed for transmission, the directors make sure that no important details are missing from normal television screens. Babylon 5 is recorded in surround sound. During its first and second seasons, story editor Lawrence G. DiTilIlo wrote the show's background dialogue, which is known as "Walla."

    Coincidentally, last night, I was looking through the Babylon 5 Season-by-Season guide for season 3, and under Interludes and Examinations, it said that Kosh originally wasn't going to be killed off in that episode. I knew that. What I didn't know was that he was going to be assassinated later in the season, which I did not know.

    Does anyone know anything else about this assassination thing? Who would've done it, for instance?

    Actually, if I remember the lurker's guide stuff correctly, that was only going to be the name of the episode, not the season. The episode was renamed to match the season.

    I've always thought Fiver was the accepted term for a B5 fan. Some for other universes I've heard include:

    Weberite - Fans of the work of David Weber, writer of the Honor Harrington series, among other things.

    40Ker - Fans of Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 universe.
