Galactic Civilizations

I'd like to give it a try, but after the disasters of Civ3 and MOO3 I'm kinda leery. That and there doesn't seem to be a demo version. Anyone know if it's any good?

  • RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
what i've *heard* it's quite good, but i don't have it either..

Civ 3 is a disaster? I I like it actually
  • So did I, until I discovered the rules of combat had de-evolved from Alpha Centauri and Civ2, all the way back to Civ1. Steel-age battleships still routinely loose to cannon & sail galleons. Soon as I found that out I tossed the game so fast it left skid marks on my harddrive. What on earth was Firaxis thinking? :p

That very odd, I never had that problem, specally on the patched version (and don't tell me that tgames shouldn't need patches, Civ II had a new patch every week for a while!)

I really have enjoyed GalCiv. I would definately recommend.
  • I heard someone saying that GalCiv doesn't have tactical combat a la Master of Orion series. Any truth to this? How does the ship combat system work?

Well I never experienced loosing a battleship to a galleon personally, just what I've read from online reviews. But I did notice even though I was using up to reniassance-era units (swordsmen & musketmen), I was still routinely loosing to horsemen & spearmen. Too many times to be flukes. That, plus I noticed units don't have a "firepower" rating like Civ2 anymore, leads me to believe that reviewer wasn't BS'ing.

Considering what you have to go through to procure advanced units, what the hell's the point if they're not that useful?? At least in Civ1 they didn't need special resources to build. That one loose thread pretty much unravels the entire game.
  • You know there are a couple of user made mods out there that correct that problem.

I've been having a lot of fun with the "Double Your Pleasure" mod.
  • Civ 3 definately needs to be patched to be really playable. And if you're unhappy with unit strengths and such, then go ahead and edit them. I think it's just a text file. I know a while back I went in and turned that ultra-annoying city limit up to 999 so I could actually run a large empire.
