The Hand ship was positioned in front of the jumpgate, not inside it. Flash back to Delenn's White Star cutting off the Drakh cruiser from the Narn jumpgate in "Lines of Communication".
one thing i would've liked was a little more perspective on the size of the new ship(its name has already slipped me). like instead of putting it up against new ships put it against a sharlin or white star for a second to get a handle on the size.
The hyperspace effect was distracting, it was hard to look at the ships... I liked the old hyperspace better.
The jump effects were cool, the Crusade ones at least stuck to B5 style orange= Jump into hyperspace and Blue= Jump out of hyperspace... ah well.
The Liandra model was good but the Valen was... well ugly. I did like the ship the crew was on in act 1. Ok, I thought it did look like a Minbari version of a mini-Excalibur, but I still liked it. The nebula, comet, and other space effects were good, in my opinion.

Well, the "bonehead manouver" is opening a jump point inside a jump point... the jump engine was down they couldn't do it, nor did they have the engine power to get away from the blast. They also NEEDED the jump gate, this would have destoryed it.
A Call to Arms used the trick of opening a jump point to destroy ships, and the Drakh fighters were behind the start of the jump point while it was forming. They flew into the wake of the jump point because they couldn't move out of the way in time.
Look at ACTA again, I don't think it would have worked this time because the ship was in front of the jump point.
hey guys I am not new to firstones.com
I don't like forums hehe .
I have a idea where the hand came from
as you know the vorlons have done bad thingsin the past like in 3rd space the gate and they have many many more things that went wrong what if they came along on some alien race etc the hand how every they came I think it took all the first ones to lock them away kinda like puting them in jail they did say in the movie that they where in some kinda jail sorry for the spelling .
I don't think we have seen the full force of the hand yet I think there more powerfull then the firstones as old to one of the many things that the firstones left behide
I don't think it a firstone that came back from the rime ... but I do think that the firstones put them in that othere space .
I think if it turn out to be a series it be a good one to find out where and how they came to be and that what made b5 so great the story and I think this has it to and could be great . they did go over board on words they said and I still wonder why they don't use whitestars but mybe only the best rangers get whitestars . I have more to say but I think I have said to much as it is if anyone read all of this hehe.

They were locked away billions of years ago, it's quite possible that those events occured before the First Ones... Maybe the first ones aren't the first ones after all. Maybe they only thought they were.
A lot of lost history can happen in a big universe.
Knowing JMS, he'll have no problem tying in all the unknowns if it goes to series. Kinda like he did with War Without End and other B5 episodes.

You're thinking in terms of seeing the jumpgate "effect". Jumpgates actually start powering up long before the gate acutally opens. I would think that the ship would notice a power spike like that.
Plus, I don't think the ship would have been destroyed just because they told the gate to open...if the ship were sitting still, I don't even think it would have moved.
If you look back at all of the video of ships entering jumpgates, the ship has to move into the gate under its own power (engines glowing). The ship only seems to accelerate quickly because of the stretching of normal space as it enters hyperspace. So I think that if they had forced the jumpgate to open, nothing would have happened...at the very worst, the "Hand" ship might have been pulled into the jumpgate, but I doubt it.

Overall, it was a good movie. I like the actors, I like the ship and the weapons system.
The Drazi and Narn rangers do stand out, and don't seem to belong, especially the Drazi. However, I also believe that their characters will grow in the series and a few years into the show (if all goes right for it), it'll be difficult to imagine it without them. Then again, they may get "permanently reassigned" like Sinclair did, before the first episode of the series is aired.
As for my complaints... my biggest complaint about the pilot movie is G'Kar. Although his first couple of appearances were good, and were ok on the ship, he got really annoying towards the end. He was extremely irritating towards the end, just going on and on, like he's a prophet that everyone should bow to. I always thought of his character as being more humble than this.
Aside from the G'Kar thing, one more problem... that embassador Kafka(?) didn't have to die. Ok, so it was a given that the pod would be scanned, and there had to be lifesigns... one of the rangers should have taken the embassador's place. That way, the ship can still get away, but they also preserve the traitor for questioning and ... unpleasant information extraction. The only problem with that (sending someone else) could be that the lifesigns may potentially have had to be of a specific species... if that is the case, couldn't it have been simulated somehow?
Those complaints aside, the pilot is promising, this may very well make a good show.
I have not seen the movie yet, but from what I've heard of the Hand I think that they could never do as much damage and destruction as the Shadows did. If this is set 3 years after season 5, thenwe know that by crusade nothing majorly destructive happens except for the telepath war. So If the hand are used as the shadows were, then the history would not make sense
Why in the hell would you give up an advanced targeting system for some chick kicking and punching in a tube? If your going to scrap computer targeting, try some type of nural interface. Silly silly.
Effects:
Hyperspace looked great. Alot more turbulent/violent looking. An improvement IMHO. The valen seemed ok. Kinda weak for a "NEW" warship. Did anyone else even see it get a shot off? The green independence war inspired puppy just doesn't seem to fit. And what no minbari cruisers hanging around either b5 OR minbar. I think I saw a G'quan... I think. The very first ranger ship looked lame o also.
Plot/acting:
Too much lame dialog. "We die for the one but we don't die stupidly" STUPIDLY! /sigh. Maybe im too picky.
Aliens:
Big evil aliens are guys in robes.... Ohhh scary. Atleast put some reverb on there voice or distort is somehow. Seems they have a better command of the english language then the captain /shrug.

The Liandra is 20 years old. It's not a new ship.

Not necessarily. Remember, the alien spy said that the ships chasing the Liandra were "toys" given to races loyal to the Hand. Even if the robes WERE what the aliens really looked like (and based on JMS' track record, I doubt it), it probably wasn't the Hand.

Aside from the G'Kar thing, one more problem... that embassador Kafka(?) didn't have to die. I'd say it probably wasn't worht the risk. Not much was known about the enemy ships or the alien spy--so why take the chance that a human could be detected in the pod?
Besides--killing the alien spy was a surprise to me, and I like that. Sure, none of the Liandra crew sacrificed themselves, but JMS has always been one for bucking convention. The crew isn't perfect, and that's a good thing.
[This message has been edited by samuelk (edited 01-20-2002).]
Well....I think that either the hand came from another dimension...or maybe they was living beyond the rim,but when the firstones/vorlon/shadows arrived...they was forced to leave.....
I have to admit I was suprised also when they sent the Spy to his death!
Now, granted it was only the Captain and the Black (bad pun on the racial thing, I doubt it was intentional though) Ops officer who knew about it, but it shows that the Rangers have the stomach to make a decision about someone elses life, and an appetite for revenge of their own.

My sentiments exactly, Jack. It's funny how people criticize JMS when he bucks convention, yet also want him to write "against the grain", so to speak. The poor guy just can't win in some people's eyes.
I liked the hyper space effects, the old ones made the ships look like they just floated in nothingness.
The jump effects just make more sense to me now, I never saw the point in having 2 different colors.
Valen was ugly, looked like half omega half nail. I don't believe that earth designers would make such ugly ships when they are at such a high technology level. Liandra looks good but small. The gunnery pod is the most stupid thing I have ever seen, and should be removed if there is a series.
G'Kar seems to be one lost individual with way to much to say. It's like he would show up in the toilet reciting a poem while your taking a dump. Starfish ships bad! Story was great for a beginning but should have worked at closing plots from past stories just incase we don't get a series .

Thing that most bugged me:
Why in the hell would you give up an advanced targeting system for some chick kicking and punching in a tube? If your going to scrap computer targeting, try some type of nural interface. Silly silly.

I'd say it probably wasn't worht the risk. Not much was known about the enemy ships or the alien spy--so why take the chance that a human could be detected in the pod?
Besides--killing the alien spy was a surprise to me, and I like that. Sure, none of the Liandra crew sacrificed themselves, but JMS has always been one for bucking convention. The crew isn't perfect, and that's a good thing.

Now, granted it was only the Captain and the Black (bad pun on the racial thing, I doubt it was intentional though) Ops officer who knew about it, but it shows that the Rangers have the stomach to make a decision about someone elses life, and an appetite for revenge of their own.

I was happy for the writing for that!

I have to admit I was suprised also when they sent the Spy to his death!

My sentiments exactly, Jack. It's funny how people criticize JMS when he bucks convention, yet also want him to write "against the grain", so to speak. The poor guy just can't win in some people's eyes.
