Amazing? i thought it was crap. I mean come on, the machines that gave rise to Agent Smith and The Matrix are those goofy looking androids? Give me a break.

The story was decent, and the animation was good, But the characters looked like crap.

The robots were made by humans to do menial and dangerous tasks. They weren't made to be killing machines, so why make them look like killing machines?

Plus, the robots were made humanoid in appearance to be more pleasing and to fit in.

Once the robots moved to their own city, they began to break free from the image in which they were created.

    Makes sense to me.

Plus, the imagery of a pleasant looking robot killing someone is much more gruesome than if the robot were made to look cool and menacing.

Also notice that as soon as they established 01, they started departing from the more human looking designs. In the first flyby, you see groups of flying robots that look a LOT like the Sentinels from the movie. It really looks to be casting things in a different light. I always pictured the machines to be acting in a more "Terminator" fashion, that they believed that they were superior and decided to crush the humans for no other reason. However, it appears that it was quite the opposite. Even after the mass killings, they still sent ambassadors from 01 to try and join the UN, to establish a peaceful coexistance with humans, and it was US who shut them out.

That actually makes more sense that having robots just kill all of the humans. The robots were logical, and realized that coexistance has its advantages.

It also suggests that the robots were not driven by rage or anger, simply self-preservation.

A robot who killed humans for no reason other than to kill would be illogical.

They don't have to look like killing machines, but come on, do you really think that humans would make them with that goofy assed expression?

Makes me think of a much much much cooler version of "Metropolis"...

And honestly, who would you rather have serving you drinks, the T-800 from Terminator, or those friendlier looking machines you see in the movie ?

Actually, its funny you should mention The Terminator, i just watched it again yesterday, Now don't get me wrong, i LOVED the Matrix, but. After watching the Terminator again, The Matrix really does steal a lot from it.
