Anyone here in the clerking biz?

Just wondering if I can now join some elite club. Was held up at knife-point last night for the first time. Second robbery though. The first was one was just a crackhead without a weapon though.

Really gives you a new perspective when you have had a butcher's knife inches from your body...

  • man...glad your OK.

If someone held a knife to my though, I think one of two things would happen, a: I'd break his arm, get him in a lock, and call the cops. or b: I'd let his have the cash. would depend on who was trying to rob me...

for those twats making light of Drazis situation...

Would you like to be dead for ten bucks an hour ?

I feel for you man. It would have to suck, you cant rationalise with a doped out idiot and any sort of retaliatory weapon etc is only upping the ante. You just have to hope the till is full when they turn up and hope they don't trigger twitch you a new orifice.

Buy a leather bikies vest to give you a chance to stop the blades. Other than that, practise unloading the till in two seconds flat... in fact, if the till is one with the insertable drawer section, make sure the sucker comes out easy and just pass it over... with any luck the drawers will slow him/her down long enough for the pigs to catch him.

And always lock the friggin door behind him, or retreat out the back and lock the door... the last thing you want in a cruiser to see him as he comes out, he turns around and decides you have hostage written all over your 7/11 clad arse...

Thank Buhda etc for bullet proof screens and stuff like that... they should install that stuff everywhere.

Mostly because you have to deal with the drunks and the crackheads at 2am.

I wish I was making ten bucks an hour... I make 6 CNDN an hour.

Here is Canada, it is the second most dangerous job behind West Coast Lobster Fishermen. Apparently they have about a 1/8 or 1/10 death rate.

It's wierd. My boss has owned the store for 27 years now, and it has only been held up twice. Both were while I was working and in the last 6 months. The last time it was just some crazy junky though. Didn't even pull a weapon or threaten me. Just held a piece of plastic over his mouth.

A2597: You sound like my boss man! He was talking about how he woulda pulled his brass knuckles, or his switchblade, or the bat behind the counter and broken his kneecaps. Now, 30 years ago I would believe he would have at least tried. He's a bit of a gangster from the old 'hood and has served time for assualt on people who tried to shoplift before. But now he's 65 so it's just funny to hear.

Losses were big... I am only teling this becuase noone here really knows who I am or where I work, so my boss's request not to tell doesnt really matter I think. Big for a convenience store anyways. About 700 in cash and over a grand in cigarettes. All told, aout 3/4 of a days sales.

Just kidding... Man, I do feel for you... Thankful that you are alive though!

$6 hr Canadian eh? WHat is that in US, $2.80 an hour I think? Definately not worth your life!
  • Drazi GuyDrazi Guy Elite Ranger
Yea, about 3.75 US I think. I don't think any amount of pay is worth my life though

I was pretty jumpy working the next night right after it though... especially with all the drunk pricks who live in my neighbourhood. Everyone thinks it is hilarious to come in and demand the money. I had the bloody doctor who works next door come in and pull out his pocketknife on me. Not amusing... shoulda called the cops on him, now that I think of it.

Hmmm...I was paid at $13 (us) an hour for my 5 week job over the summer. That was low for the company...they wanted to offer me higher, but they didn't have the budget for it in the contract they needed me for.
  • heh, I just have this thing about people steeling/threatning others...

plus, I'd prefer hand and legs to a bat or switchblades...bat is to clumbsy IMHO, a good jo staff or sward though...

(Strange to think this..but I'd actually prefer a sword to a gun, dunno why...if a guy attacks me with a gun a sword isn't going to help me much, odd huh?)

Hey Drazi, you know HTML? I'm finding it to be quite profitable... esspesially when working for someone that doesn't even know what coding is. I would have. Even if they only had a chat to him, the shock of having cops turn up about what he though was a joke would have given him a good idea about how you felt about said "joke".

And let me guess you were there alone werent you Drazi?

Here they are starting to work 2 people at night in the most dangerous areas, and i know a couple mom and pop asian grocieries that have 2 out front and somebody in the back.

Drawing a weapon isnt the first response either, you had better be damn skilled with that weapon.

One of the gunshops I frequent had a robbery, the guys didnt have guns when they broke in, just iron pipes and a knife, and the owners used their weapons to defend them selves. What they were really facing was not nifty cool weaponry, but the enormous about of training and experience those aformentioned shop owners possesed.

If your not trained properly, you are more of a risk to yourself and innocent bystanders then any assailant.

Drazi... just tell your Doctor 'friend'... that doing what he did, even with a pocket knife is classed as Assault in Australia...

in fact, pulling up your T shirt to show a pistol in your waistband is technically Assault...

I made min wage for a 45 hour work week. Min wage being 5.15 an hour US. I could work 50 hours a week and walk away with 150 bucks, sometimes 160 (i was happy those weeks....

DG, I don't know your gun laws up there but you could try to get the boss to put one behind the counter for the workers (alot of those convenience stores do that here). Then all you have to do is learn how to use it (take a class, if availible. You always want to know how to use it properly and safely). Just my .02 cents (US)

Definatly take a class most likely CLASSES, then you will be more prepared, the shooting range I am a member of has a full 32 hours of class instruction followed by a many, many hours of practice simulations to take you through basic combat handgun tactics, followed by another 24 hours for combat shotgun tactics.. Its also run by my county sherrifs office, who want the gun owners of my county to be intelligent about using firearms.. cuts down on the stress for everybody.

Then they have the SMG courses, now THOSE look like fun.

Basicly after running through the traning program at the range your as well trained as a typical reserve police officer in firearms discipline.

Pretty much anywhere outside of America in the Western world are low in guns, including Canada. I can't think of the last time a gun was used in a robbery around here. Even in Toronto, with 3.5 million people, gun violence is very low. Less than 80 murders a year if I recall correctly. So having one under the counter isn't really feasible. And I wouldn't shoot somebody anyways. Easier to hand over the money and hope for the best. Its all insured.
