Morrowind
Keyan
Ranger
in Zocalo v2.0
Has anyone else here played Morrowind? I can't stop playing it, it's a horrible addiction..at least I don't have any classes over the summer or I would really be in trouble...
Anyway, it's the best single player RPG I have ever played.

Be sure you've downloaded the patch for it, makes a number of enhancements (like target health bars) and fixes.
I'm a lvl 29 Dark Elf of a custom class...I've already done the main quest, now I am messing with making my own weapons and stuff, and doing side quests and joining other groups..
I've only had about 2 hours of play time so far (not enough free time!), so I've hardly got anywhere. I haven't even finished a single quest yet.

Not played morrowind yet.... biggest drawback for me is that it isn't multiplayer capable... or so I've been told. (Which is strange considering it's running the NetImmerse engine and I know damned well that THAT is multiplayer capable....heh, what do you think powers the MMORPG Dark Age of Camelot?). Been stuck playing Neverwinter Nights myself. Good fun there.

I quite like the levelup system in it. It's nice to get away from experience points for a change. Now leveling up means more, in that you reach a higher level when you get to a certain skill.

Melkor: The reason it's not multiplayer capable is because it was DESIGNED to be a single player game, and as it is it wouldn't translate well into a multiplayer mode at all without some MAJOR coding changes.
I do have vsynch enabled, and if I could get 85 or even 60fps in this game at ANY resolution I would be impressed. Espcially since it's set at 85hz for all resolutions. And you are talking about only fill-rate, when I think the limiting factor here is more sheer poly counts- the polygon levels are nothing short of amazing.
And it would be 4 times faster at 800x600 if fill rate was the only limiting factor.
Keyan, I know it SHOULD be 4 times more, I was just giving the chance that your video card may be old and unable to to go that high in framerates. I think the thing you do not understand is that "Framerates", pure framerates, ARE limited by your video cards fillrate. However, when you have V-Sync enabled, it forces your video card to refresh it's image at the same time your monitor refreshes its image....meaning your current frame rate has little to do with your video cards fillrate and more to do with the mechanics of your monitor...this is known as "Refresh rate", and is what you are talking about when you say things like "60Hz" or "75Hz". If you disable V-Sync, THEN your framerate becomes more dependant on your video card's capabilities as it's refreshing it's image independantly from your monitor.
-Note, If your hardware profile, be it XP, Win2k, or Win98, says "Plug and Play monitor", it will be using the default refresh rate of 60Hz at all resolutions unless you specify otherewise. Also of note, some video games will control the refresh rate of your monitor independantly from what your OS has it set for. It may be forcing your monitor to run at 60Hz while in the game...which is the slowest HARDWARE refresh rate, and thus limits your framerates lower than the video card itself it capable of.

I run a refresh rate "fix" for my Geforce 4 TI 4600 so it goes to 85 hz at all resolutions in 3D. I cannot get 85fps in Morrowind at any time, unless maybe I am staring at a wall. Yes, a pure framerate is limted to the fillrate, assuming you are looking at a very low ploygon scene with a single light. However, a game like Morrowind where you have literally tens of thousands of ploygons being transformed in the hardware, as well as pixel shaders, shadows, and several light sources means you have a LOT more going on than just filling a surface with a plain old pixel.
The simple truth is this- the game has some other limiting factors to it other than fillrate. Many others have reported the same thing. I will say this for it though- it looks AMAZING at 1600x1200 with all of the graphical stuff turned on, and the frame rate is certainly playable.
My refresh rate, I repeat, is 85hz in 3d, be it at 1600x1200 or 640x480, so THAT WILL MAKE NO, as in ZERO, difference. It's not like my screen is refreshing at 60hz in 800x600 and 85hz in 1600x1200. I know how vsynch works, and when I do a show FPS in morrowind I am nowhere near 85fps, so my refresh rate does not matter at all.
And yes, I do like the social interaction of multiplayer for coop, morrowind is like a MMORPG but without other real ppl. And, alas, on my measly modem with a HORRIBLE ISP multiplayer is very laggy and unreliable for me.

It wasn't a global statement referring to all RPGs, just the few that I have played.
I think maybe I played it a bit once, or maybe that was fallout..does 2 still use the turn based combat system?
Personally, I think Fallout 2 is the best RPG out there.

And I like the editor/expandability of Morrowind a LOT.

it's the first time I went "HOLY SH*T" over a game in a long time.
G$@ D#%* CLIFF RACERS! Is it just me or are those things every ten feet! they drive me utterly nuts!
They arent even that interesting of an apponent after a while!
Go into the Construction set, and open up the main file. Go to the "Creatures" tab, open up the Cliffracer one, and click, I think, the "AI" button to open up it's AI properties. Edit the number labeled "Attack" to somewhere below fifty. That'll make them more docile without removing them completely.
I wasn't trying to brag or knock on anything, I was just saying that the frame rate isn't high in the game and it seems to be fairly independent of the resolution you are running. In this style of game the FPS don't matter as much anyway, you get so immersed that you just don't notice.
To fix that pesky framerate dl the official patch, install it and then go Here and download the Morrowwind FPS Optimizer. It makes one Hell of a huge difference. It dynamically changes the render settings on the fly to keep it above a FPS range you set in the proggie.I would recommend setting the FPS range from 15 minimum to 20 maximum. It will still go higher than the settings just not lower. You can also use it to change the view distance mins and maxs. As far as why the framerate suffers it seems that the programmers forgot to enable culling in the game engine. The game renders EVERYTHING in the current enviroment, not just what is seen onscreen. Thats why dungeons and interiors run smooth and the outside is so choppy. Unfortunately the devs have stated that they dont have the resorces or approval to fix it so the FPS Optimizer program is all there is.
Enjoy!

Also, the patch removes the constant safedisc check which leads to an immediate increase of about 10-20% according to users who use the "no cd" crack to disable it before the patch.
