Freespace 2 coming to the Mac? Will B5 mod work?

Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
Hi guys,

Some interesting news for the few Mac users at Firstones... it appears that efforts are being made to bring Freespace 2 to the Mac. www.InsideMacgames.com has a news item about it and it looks very interesting. If you follow the link to the forum where it was mentioned you'll see a link to a screen grab of Freespace 2 running under OS X, or possibly X11. Now if this is the case, what I'd like to know is would it be difficult to port the Freespace Project B5 mod to the mac version? It would be so cool if they could port it!!!! There hasn't been a decent space sim on the mac for ages, though the same goes for the pc market aswell. Anyway here's the url:

If they use the same file formats, I really don't see it being much of an issue to port it over. The problem would be if the mac user could decompress the files. I've never really used a mac so I dunno if they can run self-extracting executable zip files.

Macs can handle most pc zip file formats but as for self extracting .exe files that would be a problem. I suppose one could use Virtual PC (pc emulator on the mac) to install the files and see how it went.

Or just use the equivilent to WinRAR to extract the contents of the exe.

I still can't find a copy of Freespace 2 anywhere... I've been wanting to get into space sims for a while, and I really liked the FS2 demo, but I get odd looks whenever I ask the people at the stores if they have a copy.

The mod is just a matter of resources, isn't it? If it is, then it should work fine.

Ok sounds promising. If and when this mac port gets released I'll give it a go with the mod.

Btw I go my pc version of the game on Amazon.co.uk, they were doing a special offer, both Freespace 1 & 2 for £15 if I remember correctly. It came in a white plastic dvd style box. I'm not sure if Amazon.com still has it.

Well, for .exes made before a year or two ago, programs like Stuffit, Zipit, and the rest of the standard Mac decompression programs will do it. After that though, they got a bit wonky, and I've tried everything from stuffit to MacRAR to various and sundry religious rituals to open those archives. The only way to do it is to use Virtual PC (or SoftWindows, or something like that).

I'd like to state for the record that I resent it immensly when people destribute simple documents with .exe files. This is why, if I ever distribute anything over the internet ever, I'm going to do it with a Mac-only installer. At least for the first few days, or weeks.

Or years. Mwa ha ha ha!!!
  • If the MacOS port suceeds then we'll do what we can to make TBP work for that format.

Wow! Thats great IceFireTBP! Thanks a bunch for that! I'll keep an eye on the mac development and report back on progress.

Ice is correct, we will probably do our best to bring TBP to MAC players as well.
But I don't think many of the team members does have a MAC, I don't at least. That means support for MAC version will be limited.

For what I have read so far about the MAC conversion, it does not require different file types. So is it possible MAC version can run TBP as is?

Thanks Mr. Fury. There are a few mac using B5 fans at the forum, and probably quite a few more out there. I've sent an email to the mac games news site that posted the news item on the Mac port. Hopefully they can shed some more light on the project. It would be good for you guys to bring out a mac version of the your mod.. sure ok there's loads more pc's out there but the market is cut throat... its easier to get noticed on the Mac side, and decent games, ports, mods get alot of good press and word tends to spread very quickly. Obviously your time and resources have to be taken into consideration.

  • I took a stab at getting TBP running on the Linux Freespace2 port. Looks workable. I'm running into some problems with the table parser (it's not happy about ships.tbl, I'm not sure why) and the filesystem's case sensitivity problems that popped up in the main campaign (Exit.ani in a table won't work if the file is named exit.ani). A quick status page (and boring screenshots of menus - the engine is still broke) is at http://www.stanford.edu/~mbrody/freespace2/tbp

This is the Icculus.org Linux port (http://www.icculus.org/freespace2), which the Mac port folks said they were basing their code on. Assuming they have their act together, I don't see why it shouldn't work once they get the main FS2 campaign running. You guys won't run into the filename problems either, since HFS+ is case-insensitive.
