Babylon 5: Waste dump

I am wondering how B5 dumps it's waste I mean ppl have to go to toilet so where does that all go?

(I will get around to making a new account for posting such questions but until then )

Why would you need another account for posting such questions?

You don't need two accounts. I'd advise against signing up for a second one.

As for how Babylon 5 deals with garbage...

According to JMS, the lower decks of Downbelow contain waste recycling and water purification facilities.
Unfortunately the station doesn't have the budget for that, and it's
easier to deal with what you have than pour more money into it in the hopes of
revenue down the road. Kinda like Congress. Also, the areas of downbelow are
mainly crummy, near the waste recycling system, the air compressors, the water
reclamation facility...not exactly choice real estate.

I recall Garibaldi or Sinclair mentioning what SamualK said in one of the shows also when they were in Down Below.

Note on name: SamualK - I think he want's an account for his website to post official news/information and one for himself to just normally post as. I see no problem with that - if I was running a website and wanted an official poster for announcements, I would do the same thing. It's not the same as having 2 accounts just becuase he can.

1. I think its upto the admins but it makes sense for him to have two accounts, since the Babylon5Online account is what he uses for updates and such on mod/game development status.

2. ALOT of the waste especialy organic waste and water waste is probably reprocessed, and recycled.. shipping stuff to the station CANT be cheap, infact I wouldnt doubt if its used as fertilizer for the massive gardens and such. anyways, stuff that cant be recycled is probably bundled up in a simple shell and then shot towards the star where it is disposed of harmlessly

As I recall Everything even the newspapers were recycled.

There's really no reason to have two accounts. No one else here needs 2. Randy, Marc, Rick, etc....they all had one single account.

There's no reason why someone has to have one account for official news and one for unofficial news.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Personally, I'm for one account. Nobody will hold anything against you for posting in this account normally.

As for the waste:

I don't see why waste couldn't be used as fertilizer. It'd effectively re-use much of what would normally be wasted. keeps the materials on B5, and in doing so, lowers operating costs.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Turning much of it into fertilizer would make sense, given the need for B5 to grow a lot of food and the size of its gardens.

As for the account: You only need one. There is no reason why you can't post normal posts and announcements under the same name. If people can't figure out from the topic or your message body that it's announcement, there's something wrong with them.

Good points on the accounts thing.

I still think there probably were some materials, probably chemicals and maybe radioactives that had to be disposed of. What kind of manufacturing base did Babylon 5 posses? anyways, to recycle certain products takes alot of equipment.. like scrap metals requires a smelter to process, so exactly WHAT could they process and not process?
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Well, re-forming metals could easily be done. They do have a fusion reactor at the back of the station. I'm sure it's damn hot. Why not put that heat to use? Heat the station, use it for industrial purposes, etc.
• Jon_SJon_S Earthforce Officer
Bulk metal would be fairly easy. Getting specific alloys less so, but still not hard.

Paper, in as much as it is used wouldn't be hard.

Human waste as fertilizer (possible for the big park in the center of the station) easy enough, just radiation sterilize it and spread it out.

The tricky stuff would be the complex organic materials (organic as in carbon based, not as in living). Plastics, Hydrocarbons (grease, oil, [not gasoline, since based on Garabaldi's motorcycle ep, it isn't used on the station]). Some types of plastics are produced in irreverable processes; which prevents remolding and combining produced plastic to make new plastic. Other examples would be composites; carbon fiber panels. Other items sealed / made with glue or epoxys.

Industrial chemicals would also be an issue. Seperating or purifying them for reuse could be hard or impossible depending on what they were used for.

And then the all around scourge of recycling, complex objects. Electronics, Appliances... These are manpower intensive to dissasemble into component parts for recycling.
• I think all that stuff goes into a big smelly trash compactor where it gets eaten by this funny snake-monster with one big red eye.

MILO! So good to see you! How is starshatter doing?

Also, it is in the futre, they may have new materials usefull for space use (ie, easy to recycle).

Yes milo, you need to stop by more often...

I would say that B5 would not have a huge industrial base. It isn't a factory station. At the most they'd have fabrication plants for replacement parts for the station. However, there would be a lot of industrial chemicals and similar that would be used for station systems.

That was exactly my point Biggles, which means it doesnt have the facilities to recycle all its waste products.. so some of it gets chucked somewhere.. INTO THE STAR! w00t! best trash disposal system around!

You're assuming way too much. The station runs on a fusion reactor. That would suggest that a lot of industrial processes we have today might be obsolete by then.

I think the bottom line is that JMS never really outlined that part of the B5 universe very well, and so the answer doesn't exist beyond a general one.

Most everything biological was recycled on B5. crap, pee, water, food. it had to be because for the most part b5 had to be self sustaining.

If they didn't, then flying turds might create a navigational hazard. Can you just imagine flying around in a starfury in a firefight and run into a bunch of turds, blocking your vision? I'd feel sorry for the pilot when he returned to B5. Especially if it was pak'ma'ra poo.

to prove my dorkiness. the turds would not lets say be mallable. they would be frozen stuff, and be hitting the starfurys cockpit like stones.
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
More likely, they'd have special waste disposal canisters, easy to detect, and fire them into the sun, rather than simply dumping the raw waste into space.
