Ivanova, Traitor?

While reading the Lurker's Guide for B5 episodes, "Believers" and "Survivors", the moderator seemed to have hinted some 8 or 9 years ago that Ivanova would end up being the traitor on the station:

"How did Ivanova defeat or escape all those raiders? There is some slight evidence she's working with them (cf."Midnight on the Firing Line".) – “Believers”"

"Ivanova's reluctance to stop the countdown is suspicious. Perhaps she had some reason to want the launch to take place; perhaps she even knew what was going to happen if it did. – “Survivors”"

I wonder if the Lurker's Guide had assumed Ivanova would take Laurel Takashima's place as the traitor, simply because she took the latter's place as the station's First Officer.

Laurel Takashima was going to be a traitor!? nooooo! she was to cute to be a traitor.. ack! I demand a script change!

Anyways to get back to the serious nature of the discussion.. That seems the likely source of thier supposition, although I dont really envision JMS running out with the plan to make Ivonova a traitor, it doesnt fit with what we know of her personality.. what was her motivation for siding with the raiders?

Can anybody think of a reason? she didnt seem to be motivated by desire for wealth or power, maybe a hatred for Earth Force? but why?

I think its very much a carry over from Takashima being a traitor or at least connections on a darker side of things, she was suppost to have been given a "shadowy" past right?

The idea of Ivonava being a traitor comes from the Takashima going to be a traitor. This became well known and people assumed JMS would carry this over into whoever was taking that part.

That assumption, becuase JMS was reading all the online reports of it, was quickly decided to have someone else be the traitor. The traitor was actually decided I belive before the first episode aired with Ivonava. The traitor (hope I'm not spoiling something for you) is the assistant cheif of security.

This is what JMS had to say on the subject:
Correct; Garibaldi's aide has *always* been a plant. I seeded him in from the beginning, specifically for that purpose. It was the aide who got Sinclair out of his quarters in "Sky," was the liaison who got Benson on line (also in security, you'll remember), and helped dispose of the body. If you watch his reaction in "Sky," he's the one who brings info to Garibaldi looking to clear Benson; and when Garibaldi sees through it, you can see his aide move off looking very worried.

Originally, it was Laurel Takashima who would have betrayed those around her, as this character did. When Laurel was transferred, I had a choice: keep that arc for her replacement (Ivanova), or give this part of it to someone else. Now, knowing how the folks here on the nets and elsewhere think, and knowing that they knew about the Laurel- possible-traitor thread, I figured that everyone would assume that Ivanova would get that part. (And, sure enough, a lot of people did.) This became a wonderfully convenient blind behind which to build the *real* plant.

And thus far, *nobody's* seen it coming. He was right there in clear view, we used him many times (also in "By Any Means Necessary," for instance), and nobody ever paid him the slightest attention.

It is, in a way, the classic magician's trick of misdirection: you try to get everyone to look at your hand so they won't look at the huge elephant being wheeled up onto the stage in plain sight.
I couldn't really see Ivanova being a traitor anyway. It just doesn't seem to fit her character. She was pretty loyal to sinclair, and then to sheridan as well.

Ivanova being a traitor would have destroyed her character. It never would have worked.

Of course i'm also saying that with having knowledge of her 4 seasons.

Yes the different nature of Ivonova's character definatly necessitated a change in plot roles. besides Now I get to believe in Takashima's innocence

Ivanova would not have been a traitor. Would have been the absolute opposite of her true self.

Yeah, especially after what she did to her ex-boyfriend. She made it quite clear that she would NEVER be one of them.

To get this back sorta on topic I was reading JMS comments about Laurel being an unwilling traitor, and thus I querry this:

With her supposed hesitancy in betrayl its begining to look like she wasnt just blackmailed, but she may have even had a "keeper" implanted on her. If thats the case then she's pretty much innocent of wrong doing since the damn critter is running her, but how were they going to get away with it with a vorlon on the station? Wouldnt Kosh have detected the keepers presence ruining the whole thing?
  • BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
Actually, Takashima's betrayal was transferred to Talia Winters. Recall Bureau 13? Control? The implanted Psi Corps personality? That was going to be Takashima. In other words, she wasn't going to even know that she was a traitor.
