What might have been?
OK, I've asked something like this before, and been told that JMS refuses to give out much information about what B5 might have been, all the various ideas he'd had over the decade or two since it's original conception. What I'd like to know now is, what do we ALREADY know? Ideas, theories? What has JMS already said about his original plans?

Watch the series over... There's no room here...
Let it go.... enjoy the series for what it is.... time to put this topic to rest...
The only regret i have about what B5 "MIGHT" have been, is if they had been guarenteed the 5 seasons,
If they had, then the Shadow War would have gone on for the rest of season 4, and the war with earthforce would have been with season 5, I think everything that is currently in Season 5 would have been there, but would not have been the main focus of the episodes, Kind of like the Episode TKO, You had the main story of the Mutai, But there was also the story of Ivanova sitting shiva (which was the better of the 2 stories).
I think that since they didn't know if they were geting the 5th season, they had to rush to finish the shadow war, and finish the story arc with earth, which could have been made longer and fuller if they had not had to rush to finish. (and if they KNEW they had the 5 years, they might have had 5 year contracts and we'd never have lost CC, she was my favorite character, she's russian, she's a jew, and she's damn cute, whats not to love? heh)

That never happens. Even network shows like "Friends" are renewed on a season-by-season basis.

Even that is unusual. Like others said, generally its season by season.
sg1 got 2 seasons from the beginning, then season by season probably(don'T know that)
Contracts are more flexible than you'd think. There are always "outs" for either party (the network AND the people who produce the show).

Thats not always true, look at ER, 2 years ago the were picked up until 2005, So it does happen. Just not that often, and usually only with a successful show that is many years into its run.
But let me rephrase my origional statement.
If at the end of season 3, they knew they were getting the last 2. it would have changed everything

Babylon 5 is a cult science fiction show. No matter how great it is it will stay that way.
And i say to hell with anyone who hates the fifth season

It was renewed for 2 years then pulled after the first year of the renewal. On the plus side we dont have to wonder what the story woulda been, as we are seeing it now. Trouble is we don't get to see how it ends. Not unless it is picked up...

*It is only a dream but a nice one at that*

Thats not an entirely true statement, Yes, it was designed to run 5 years, but the 5 year story had to change when they were not sure if they were getting year 5.
And other changes were made along the way (sinclair leaving, Ivonava leaving etc..)

The show was as radical an idea as the station itself- to try something that had never been attempted before, that many thought would fail. It succeeded.

If they had, then the Shadow War would have gone on for the rest of season 4, and the war with earthforce would have been with season 5
Didn't JMS say once that he would have ended season 4 with the episode "Intersections in real time"? So actually, it seems that the Shadow War would not have taken that much longer in season 4, and that it was rather the Civil War with Earth that got a little "cut down" from the original storyline...

Right, the civil war got cut down by a lot. Everythign that was in season 5, was (as far as i know) supposed to be told, But the earth civil war would have taken longer.
So... For the first time in months, I had a chance to sit down and watch Babylon 5 on SciFi today... and what episode do you think they showed?
TKO

See i like half of TKO, I like the whole bit with Susan and her Rabbi (maybe cause i'm a russian jew) but the Mutai i could do without.

I think the message was that we won't find the Grail for about a Million years (like that episode in Season 5 where we see humans like the Vorlons are today).
Our long crawl has many years ahead of it...

Unless you are Jason Ironheart.
It has a beginning, and it has an end.
It shows you what little worms we can become, if left with our own vices. You know the episode 500 years in the future, were earth tries to succede from the Alliance.
At least its not like StarTrek, scheesh, they change the storyline everytime or anytime they like. No Continuity (sp?)whatsoever.
Thats what happens when someone else gets ahold of your vision.
At least with B5, you know whats ahead and what to look forward too.

With Season 5, some hate it, some love it. I enjoyed it but I always watched it with a feeling of forboding... I always knew it would end. And it did end, but in the best way possible.

I didn't dislike Season 5, I just thought that seasons 2-4 were much better.
