Plot point question regarding "Z'ha'dum"

VladVlad Earthforce Officer
Ok, I've been rewatching some B5 episodes, in order to attempt to whet my appetite for the DVD releases (fall can't get here soon enough), and upon watching "Z'ha'dum", something didn't quite make sense...

Sheridan said that he went to Z'ha'dum to try and save Centauri Prime, because of what he saw, and what Delenn told him in WWE 1/2.

Now, in WWE, he was in a future time where Centauri Prime was in flames for some reason, somehow caused by the allies of the Shadows. Then Delenn tells him that he shouldn't go to Z'ha'dum before he becomes unstuck in time again.

Here's what I don't get, if Delenn was telling him that he shouldn't go to Z'ha'dum, and that was in a timeline where Centauri Prime was ruined, then why did Sheridan think that Centauri Prime fell BECAUSE he went to Z'ha'dum? If anything, wouldn't Delenn (in the future) telling him not to go to Z'ha'dum (in the past) imply that he DID go (otherwise, how would she know the consequences)?

I've never been able to figure that out. However, I also never saw any of the 5th season (haven't had cable for years), so if it's answered there, just tell me that and I'll wait for the DVD. Otherwise, any possible answers would be appreciated

  • Ah, you havn't seen the 5th season. That would explain your confusion.

It has nothing to do with the fifth season....

Basically, Sheridan thought about it too hard. His first reaction was probably something along the lines of "OK, Delenn told me not to go, so I'm not going." But then he thought about himself from that future timeline. He reasoned, "wouldn't that version of me also have received the same warning from Delenn? And if so, wouldn't he have followed it? Maybe Centauri Prime falls because I follow that advice." And so, he decided to change the future any way he could.

Bekenn's pretty much got it. It all comes down to paradoxes in the end.

Yeah, Bekenn's solution sounds about right...

But then again, if his future self didn't go to Z'ha'dum, then why would Delenn have warned agaist going?

she didnt want him to go because he was going to die. she didnt want him to die.

And after that, he would've died again, and no Sci-Fi girlfriend needs that.

That's the problem with living in a scifi universe. In a normal universe, you can only die once. Hmm, maybe it isn't a problem afterall.

Yeah, I know that's her reason for warning him against going, but it's Sheridan's interpretation of it that I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around.

Yes, but he knew it would be a trap.

Sheridan thought Centari Prime fell because he DID heed delenns warning in the time-flash.
So he went to try and prevent it - hero style.

Okay, my take on things (woo)...

Sheridan believed he would die if he went to Z'ha'dum (Kosh: "If you go to Z'ha'dum, you will die."), so he reasoned if he was still alive in the future timeline, then he must not have gone to Z'ha'dum. Bleh...

    Then why did he go?

    Hmmm.. interesting take on it.

I've been thinking about it more lately, and here's the best theory I could come up with.

Future Delenn knew that Sheridan was having his flash forward, and Sheridan knew that. While she was telling him not to do something that didn't really have anything to do directly with the current state of Centauri Prime, he thought that he had gone sometime before the Future he was in, and she was just re-affirming his decision... I think.

Asturcon, I don't think the centauri are like the Spanish. I think they're more like a combination of the English, French, and the Later Roman Empire of the 5th century under the direction of Aetius (my namesake).
