Star Trek: The Next Generation (It's about time!)

Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
I have never seen the series. Ever. Maybe one episode here and there.. They never showed it on the regular tv when I was into this stuff as a kid, and by the time I wanted to see it was only on cable.

So yesterday I started watching it from the beginning, so I can delete the damn thing. I fast forwarded through most of Voyager last year doing the same. Just to see it to make space for other stuff.

Now.. Seen the first 3 episodes and I know it did not start all that well. The pilot was ... meh. I like Q. But he wasn't the same then as he's "grown" to be later on.

And to be honest. Wesley wasn't as annoying as I imagined. He's pretty annoying when he gets "drunk".. but never near the amount of annoyance as that one alien from those three movies that shall not be named and that never happened. There are only 3 movies, episodes IV, V and VI.

Another thing.. That psychic chick.. Meowr.. She's kinda meaty, could see that on her legs when she was sitting down in this short skirt thing, but I'd hit that. Then. It's good to have something to hold on, and she was by no means fat, nice and.. cushy.

Too bad she's started wearing more in the other episodes. Pity really..

Anyway.. Let's see how it goes. 3 more episodes today, or 4.. Then one episode / day next week until the weekend. :)

Are you sure you don't mean The Next Generation rather than Enterprise? ;)

Balls. Yes. :P
tired.. sooo tired.. :O

Once you get past season 1, it starts to get really good, except for Wesley, who starts to get really bad. It's obvious the writers had no idea what a teenager was really like.

Yea. I listened to the podcast from nerdist.com yesterday with him in it, got some good comments regarding his time on the show. Wil Wheaton that is.
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
It's a shame that Wesley was such a wishy washy character, because listening to Wil Wheaton now, i think he could have brought a lot more of his own personality to the role, had he been allowed.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
I'm going to expand upon Biggles' statement and say...if you can get past Season 2, then it gets good. The general quality of a given TNG episode seems to be directly correlated to the fullness of Riker's beard.

In all seriousness, Season 3 was when Rodenberry took a step back and let the rest of the writing staff have more creative control. The show was originally intended to almost fully carry the TOS flag in terms of story and visual style, but that was not terribly popular with audiences. the latter third of the Season 2 was where things started settling in.

I generally have a hard time watching any season 1 or 2 episode to the point where I didn't even bother getting the DVDs of them. Season three is a huge step forward in terms of production values and writing.

Shockingly I did the same as Worf, I got the dvd's from S3 onwards also. I would kinda like to get S1+2, but really only for completeness

Don't forget Season 2 occurred during a writers strike, and a large number of the episodes during it were from Star Trek 2 (never produced) and modified for TNG by directors.

For reference, Star Trek 2 was planned around 1979 but with the advent of Star Wars, they instead decided to morph it into what became Star Trek: The Motion Picture and scrapped the additional scripts they had written for the first season. Using this cache of scripts allowed ST:TNG to keep producing new episodes during the writers strike when most shows were unable to air anything due to a lack of scripts.
• And lets not forget that Season 2 also introduces the Borg. The whole season is worth it just for that to me. It also happens to be one of the better Q episodes. I liked him better in the early show when he was actually somewhat menacing rather than an omnipotent buffoon like the later seasons.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
I have the episode that introduced the Borg seperately. Interestingly, I prefer Q later on when he was used for comedy episodes.

Worf
• Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
My favorite Q episodes were always involving his interactions with Guinin.
• Q as comedy rocked.

As serious? Ehhhh

Edit: I just relized this show started in 1987.
I remember watching the 1st ep with my parents. That means TNG is one of my first memories. (Up there with the Key in the socket and choo choo train wallpaper...)

Ow, that kinda hurt my head just now.

Now that you mention it, I too remember watching TNG at a very early age. It would have been when it was first being broadcast in this country too; I don't know why I find that somehow surprising, but I do :)
• Sigh...I seem to stand alone.

But yes, TNG started when I was in Kindergarten, so one of my first memories as well.
• Q, to Warf: "Eat any good books lately?"

That line never ceases to amuse. :D

Akrovah: I honestly haven't seen the first 2 seasons in so many years I can barely remember them. I suppose I should watch them again really before commenting, but my memories of them just weren't great, altho again, I was quite a lot younger when I last watched them
• I have the 1st season on a torrent.....eh, not that good. Makes S1 of B5 look like epic material. I like how they show off the ship more though.

And yeah, TNG is pretty much the first TV show I can remember, I got an epic Enterprise-D model for my 5th birthday that I still have :)
• WORFWORF The Burninator
I remember a handful of clips from TNG but the BBC stopped showing it for awhile in favour of TOS.

But I was first introduced to Star Trek by my dad's boss. We visited his house once and he was watching The Motion Picture. It caught my interest so he explained who the characters were and the whole concept of the show.
• Oh Shadow, no doubt the first couple of seasons were fairly weak overall. I just liked Q better then.
• I forgot what an ass Picard was the 1st episode...
• FreejackFreejack Jake the Not-so-Wise
TNG is good and probably the peak of the ST franchise, but there are basically 4 or 5 plots that that are used in TNG episodes:

- Crew meets seemly benevolent alien
- Alien turns out to be have malicious intent
- Ship and/or crewmember(s) in peril
- Technology magic gets ship/crew out of peril

- Crew meets seemly malicious alien
- Ship and/or crewmember(s) in peril
- Alien turns out to be have benevolent intent
- Technology magic gets ship/crew out of peril

- Disease puts crew or crew member in peril
- Technology magic get person out of peril

- Starfleet Admiral send crew on mission to perform some task
- Admiral turns out to be have malicious intent
- Ship and/or crewmember(s) in peril
- Technology magic and/or regulation wrangling get ship/crew out of peril

- Q shows up (sometimes combined with the plot points listed above)

TNG was the peak of the "Exploring" star trek franchise. I'd say DS9 peak of "Plot" franchise.

But yea, season 1 is a little rough.
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
IMO the later seasons of DS9 represent by far the best of the franchise. Not to say that the others didnt have their moments...

Oh, he was funny as hell! I still remember that one episode, where he turned Crusher into a barking golden retriever, while she was chewing his ass out! XD

watched ep three today...Amazing, Westley blows up a star ship in the second episode, and gets a pat on the back for it.

Not to mention, Tasha screws an android. I really didn't remember that.
