I suppose it would have been too much to expect this to be a WoW killer. I really don't think that scifi and Star Trek in particular have that much mainstream appeal anymore if it ever had that to begin with. In geek circles it's part of what we grew up with and it's part of our cultural baggage, but I don't see much of that in the public at large.
Whoever thinks any MMO to be a WoW killer is only fooling themselves. In fact I've heard that the best way to get initial funds is to tell the investers you are not making a WoW killer. No MMO on launch is going to have the stability, features, and content of an MMO that has been around for a while.
You know those subscriptions everyone whines about? Because of that games like WoW has been receiving constant updates for six years, Eve online for seven. In order for a game to be on par the game will have to be in development for an equivalent around the time.
The complaints gamespot are making are almost ridiculous. Yes some of the complaints are valid. But complaining the missions are easy if you stick to your level? That each mission is fight rats or do some simple puzzles or gathering? Sounds just like my world of warcraft play experience!
And no memorable missions? They obviously didn't play the Guardian of Forever mission (although more memorable missions need to pop up sooner)

The Doomsday Machine mission was also good fun. But yes, how on earth can a game that's only been released for less than a month possibly compete with anything thats been around as long as WoW or Eve? Its like expecting a newborn baby to compete with Einstein
What are you talking about? Let's compare apples to apples, shall we?

Cryptic isn't a newbie at making MMO's as I recall. They know what they are doing, and I can agree that the Gamespot review is too harsh for something that needs a little more TLC, time and effort to improve.
That's like saying Toyota can't make a good car anymore... oh wait, they can't. :D
STO was never going to beat WoW. No one except a fool would think it could. Luckily, Cryptic were well aware of that and designed the game accordingly.
I'm actually glad it's not a WoW killer, because we'd have a massive influx of people from that game. So far the people I've interacted with in STO have been pleasant and knew how to work well as a team.
Can't say the same about time I spent in WoW.
The only game that has any reasonable chance of taking over from WoW is The Old Republic.

Most people I've encountered in STO seem to have an average age somewhere beyond the prepubescent level, something I cant say about WoW. Not that all WoW players are idiots, and all STO players are perfect (except me, obviously), but with WoW it is a lot more noticable that there are lots of young players
Here's a question for some of you still using this game: Has it improved enough since the initial release to warrant interest? I've been considering picking up an MMO for the new year, and my choices seem to be EVE and...EVE. But I don't necessarily want to play something quite so involved right now, and the casual grind of STO was appealing for that short while I did play. Is it still a giant mess of basically fanfic? Is it even worth playing? Or perhaps there are other options I should investigate.
I may also branch this out into a new thread to better discuss matters. I just want to play a social game! Maybe Civ V is more up my alley right now?
The biggest problem for me is the ground combat hasn't changed. They are looking at fixing it in the season 4 update.
The most recent update has changed sector space, so now it actually looks and feels like you're flying around at warp. The general layout of the game is still the same though.
They've also started releasing weekly missions. This is basically a multi part story told over the course of several weeks. So far there have been two, one involving the Breen and the other was about the Dividians.
They are currently testing the Foundry before they'll make it available for public use. It's basically a mission creation toolset. Players will be able to create their own missions which are then submitted to Cryptic for approval. Normally I'd object to that latter part but in this instance, it helps weed out the garbage.
Awhile back they added Task Force Missions, which require a group to complete. We've been discussing it on IRC but not sure if we have enough to take part.
I've probably missed a few things, check the STO site for some of the state of the game posts.

It's certainly a lot better than it was. Like Worf says, there are a few things that aren't better yet, but the Devs do seem to be actively listening to the players and changes are being made. From the sounds of it, I think Season 4 will iron out a lot of the remaining niggles, but already I'm finding it much more enjoyable to play.
Overall: not perfect, but improving
Oh, and it's worth getting to Admiral just so you can use the Galaxy with saucer separation. Very entertaining, and handy too :D

Have they made the rooms smaller yet?

I was recently made aware that I still pay monthly subscriptions to the game (though I haven played it in 6 or so months), the question is then, should I continue to?
i got back into it about a month ago after half a year of not playing. i do enjoy it again (though levelling a klingon is still a pain). crafting saw some improvement in the last update and from what i have heard from a friend on the test server the foundry will be fun - especially if you look at some of the multimission story arch ideas that people already came up with, yummy!
incase you want to do the task force missions i have 2 buddies that also want to do them (only us 3 left in the fleet playing)
Maybe i'll have to give it a try again, My daughter has been playing all along, but i played it the first week it came out, then went back to Warcraft... I'm still waiting for The Old Republic

From what I've seen of Old Republic, I think that will become my WarCrack :p
As for STO TF's, I'm potentially up for doing some however as I work shifts at random hours in the hospital we'd have to plan them for nights I'm at home

Craig Zinkievich, the executive producer of STO is moving on to greener pastures...
I see you can get the 'All Good Things...' Enterprise now....tempting :D

Also, who else from here is active there?
