FreezeFreeze Disguised as a Trainee
Hi'ya!

Finland has been a very, very warm place this summer. National heat records have been broken several times in heat waves continuing for several weeks - current record is 37,2 °C which is pretty darn extreme for this latitude. Just to increase the level of enjoyment, smokes from the fires in Russia have been graying our skies every now and then.

To add into that, our relative humidity have gone through the roof - reading 80 - 100% between day and night. That, in my book, says "tropical climate".

The thunderstorms that've ripped through the country have left staggering amounts of people without electricity or phone / mobile connections, damaged homes and extensive property damage. When power companies had barely fixed 50% of the broken power lines, another storm came. And then another. An another. You get the picture. Winds were up to 30 m/s (and plus) in downbursts and baby tornados that swiped down forests, yard trees and one large campsite in Finland like they were chopsticks.

This message is actually inspired by a video that has appeared in Youtube, that shows a how fast one of the first thunder storm's cloud wall pushed up in one of Helsinki's large swimming beach, Finland. The video is from a news mag, music was added by the YouTube uploader. It's dramatic. but it sits in fine :D

Had I seen that, I would have f*ucking run up the hills, even though I think thunder *really* does not afraighten me. The storm that reached our area of Finland, gave maybe 10,000 flash strikes in 24h, and the sky was lit up continously. And the rain and the wind... never seen anything like it in here. I took my fiance's scooter into a shelter inside the storm, and it almost throw me over.

Have a look - thunder clouds do _not_ rise this quickly in Finland. Or, well _didn't_ rise. Now they do.

... and what's been going on in here, in Peaceful Finland?

... another storm front coming in, with the potential to create as much destruction as the strongest one experienced a while ago. Climate change, here we come.

I was caught by the same storm you described... quite an unusual experience indeed, darkness came upon suddenly accompanied by high wind speeds. Plus lots of electrical activity.

Also one thing is certain by now: the Sonisphere Festival is as fatal event as the World Sauna Championships.

Looks like the good ole thunderstorms we have the flair up on regular occasion here in the Midwest US. It would be interesting to see the radar echo for the storm, given the speed, I bet it's a nice bow-echo.

So you're not really living up to your name then, Freeze? :p

As with Freejack, we get storms like that all the time here at this time of year. They're bloody impressive to watch. It can be sunny blue skies where you are, while 5km away the lightning is coming down every few seconds.

It was fun standing outside taking pictures of the show. :)

For that reason I keep checking weather radar when T-storm are approaching. We've had some flash flooding this week.

These radar systems are useless if no one is watching them.

I wish that driving hybrid cars would fix our climate but I seriously doubt that.

It probably will in about a 100 years once the system responds... I don't think the climate is the sort of system that responds immediately to changing inputs.

Well, you could plan them to use the electric charge of atmosphere during thunderstorm to load their batteries :D

Allot of solar storms recently, effecting the jet streams, floods in pakistan/china, draughts in Russia, northern lights in lower 48 states. I think ISS had a cooling problem too.
