Cheap Computers

Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Anyone know a good source online for cheap computers, barebones etc. I'm looking to build some new ones for the Cafe, but all the places i've looked (new egg, Tiger direct) the barebones combo's that i've come up with, cost as much as a low end Dell, and if the price is close, i'd rather go for the Dell with the Warranty.

Also, if anyone has any old (a few years old) computers or LCD monitors they are thinking about throwing away, I'd be happy to take them off your hands, (i'll even pay for shipping).

All the computers at the cafe were built by the previous owner almost 10 years ago, and while they still run Ubuntu fairly well, they are in need of upgrades, but since I now own the cafe, and all upgrades come out of my own pocket.... well, you get the idea.

I think the postage from the UK would be more than buying a new monitor ;)

I have yet to see anyone throw away an LCD monitor around here, CRT are a dime a dozen, but LCD? heh... Even eBay has ridiculous prices for ones that don't even work...

sheesh...

Lol, I've actually already been given 3 machines, 2 LCD's and a 19 inch LCD TV.

I dont mind buying machines, but right now i just can't find any cheap barebones, If i want to replace all our customer machines i ahve to replace 24 machines, and 16 Monitors, and now that all the money comes out of my own pocket, that's not going to be cheap.

But if i can find anyone getting rid of any "modern" machines... otherwise i'll just pick up a couple $250 Vostro's

As for Postage from the UK. i'll have my sister in law pick it up before she comes over, LOL

Also, If any of you do web site desgin or graphics design, i need a new webpage, and some ideas for a new Logo. And am willing to pay a reasonable price for those.

How cheap is a cheap machine? I'm asking because anything that sells for $250 is going to probably be several years out of date already.

i use ibuypower for my stuff. I priced a gulftown 6 core on neweggg and pre built one at ibuypower and it was surprisingly the same price. their bare bones AMD Athlon II are 459 though. You might do better a place calling to get a volume discount.
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Out of date? I'm currently runinng Ubuntu on Athlon 1800+'s and Duron 1100's.

the $250 machines are Core 2 Duo's which should run ubuntu just fine fo the next half decade.

Indeed. It is a web cafe for cruise boat tourists, not WoWing teenagers. :)

My best machine is now my Laptop, which is a AMD Turion X2, but as Desktops go, I'm still using the AMD 1800+ myself...

:)
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
the 1800+'s work well enough, but they are starting to slow down on some newer intenet apps, and as we do charge for internet access, people sometimes complain about the speed of the machines, which is totally understandable.

So i'm trying to speed them up a bit, the machines i've been given are a dell celery 2.0 ghz, and a pair of 3 year old dell AMD X2 3800's. which should make decent win XP machines (for the people who don't want to use Ubuntu, or for the few things they need that won't run on ubuntu/firefox)

And he'll do a seriously bitchin' job of it, too!

I just saw the old Emory logo you created for my parents' company, Shadow Boxer. It's tragic that such a superb image was left to rot in the carcass of the dead company.
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Aye, i'll give you a hollar on that as soon as i have a spare moment, Trying to get the cafe read for the season and have disocovered i've got a whole day of plumbing repair to do, and people keep dropping off their computers for me to fix.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Regarding computers, have you considered building up a nettop-based setup? The great convenience with several is the ability to be attached to many monitors' VESA mounts (such as the Asus AspireRevo and certain Asus EeeBox variants), as well as a straight-up low cost. The systems aren't particularly fast, but will hold up well to regular use for a good deal longer.
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
I've considered it, Not sure i'm quite ready to go that way yet. I bought 3 new dells (were supposed to be here on the 21st, but will be here tommorow instead) as well as the 3 machines i was given. I wasn't going to buy the machines, but i figured 3 machines at $429 each, with 21 inch LCD's wasn't too bad.

i just got my wife an Asus Eee PC for her bday. It is very good for a netbook. 1001p-u17 model. For non gaming it is great.

Are you still looking for computers? I has a larger computer recycler near me that always has a wide array of older units for sale. I was just in there today and they had a whole slew of the compact dell sets (19" moniter with the box attached to back) with P4 3.0s for $299 with XP loaded.

The recycler is EPC. They have quite a bit of stuff on their ebay store too: http://stores.ebay.com/Executive-Personal-Computers
