I am in New York

In BetweenIn Between The Ultimate Lurker
Calling all NYe'rs. I have been to MOMA, Staten Island, Long Island and The Village (the East part as well). I have done all the tourist stuff before back in 1988. I like micro-brews as well as SCI-FI and electronic gadgets. I can't get tickets to Colbert or Daily Show either !!!:(
BTW The MTA Metrocard is the best thing ever !!

Help a Californian ;)(OK... Irish emigrant) out here people !!!

Note to everybody else. What follows is a good guide to NY. (No pressure NY'ers):D

  • Here's a list of places to visit for a beer maniac (regional favorites on the right side): http://www.ratebeer.com/places/states/32/

    Another list: http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/city/12

    And a map: http://www.ratebeer.com/Maps/MetroList-72.htm

That Spuyten Duyvil looks like a very nice spot... they've got a decent selection of bottled beers including products from Cantillon, Hanssens, Fantôme and Le Baladin, although surprisingly low amount of domestic stuff.

Edit: a couple of blocks from Spuyten Duyvil one can find also the Spuyten Duyvil Grocery, allegedly the finest beer store in city filled with amazing American and excellent European microbrews.
  • SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Hit up Union Square, visit Forbidden Planet.

I'm short on ideas, but you simply can't go wrong in NYC! Unfortunately, I'm not around, so I can't poke and prod you into a meet-up.

If you are near Union Square and dig books, check out The Strand Bookstore (8 miles of books) you're likly to find lots of out of print SciFi there.

ANd if you are looking for good food,

Two Boots 37 Ave A in the east village, great pizza,

DaNico on Mulberry St, a very reasonably priced and good italian place in little italy, and afterwords head over to Grand street and Ferrara, the best Italian pastry place on the planet.

Havelli 100 2nd Ave in the village, best Indian food this side of India.

as for fun things to do, Museum of Natural History is always fun, SonyWonder can be interesting, i haven't been there in years but it used to be fun to go see Sony's new tech.

    Thanks

@Entil'Zha Went to The Strand (that place is HUGE I could spend a month in there and not finish browsing books) and DaNico (heavenly coffee. I think, Little Italy is a bit smaller then it was in '88 could just be my lousy memory)
I will save everything else for the next trip.

@Sanfam Cought up with my Buffy fix at Forbidden Planet. My god I have never seen so many action figures, T shirts, comics etc in one place. Book collection was a bit short but I had just come from the Strand just around the corner. Next time, I will give you more notice and could meet somewhere.

@Eclecticonaut I am off to Brooklyn today to hit up Spuyten Duyvil, Brooklyn, Greenpoint and Sixpoint Breweries. I will see how far we get !!!
What do you think of Heartland Brewery I found it yesterday while I was in Union Square ?

NY seems more relaxed then it used to be and there are a lot more children around too !! I will be back in SF on Saturday. Thanks for helping me out !!

The Strand is one of my favorite places in the world, When i lived in NYC my dad worked right across the street, so the wife and i would come in to meet up with my folks, and just hang out there for hours.

DaNico used to have an outstanding Chicken Picata. I loved it becuase it was reasoably priced and good food.
  • Well, Ratebeer says Heartland is "out of business" and their beers are being brewed at Greenpoint... can't say much about it without an opportunity to taste the products, but I'd imagine it's a place worthwhile to visit.
