Ugh... and it looks like it's actually going to be somewhat more of a remake of TOS. You want a BSG movie? I say edit the mini series to cut it down by 20 minutes or so and refresh the CGI to the latest standars, then release to theaters. I can't even deal with the idea of BSG with any other cast at this point.

Heaven forbid they actually come up with something fresh and original! I agree with Vorlons, it just can't be any other cast for me now either
• Oh good gravy.
• Wow.... give me some of that money if they don't know what to do with it. We all could do something better with it!

It's worth noting that this is the movie version of the original BSG that the original creator, Larson, has been pushing for for a decade or so. Having turned him down for so long, I expect that Universal has decided that now is a good time to cash in on the success of the remake by taking him up on his offer. No doubt it will be as cliche-riddled as the original.

From what i gather, this is the exact project that Universal declined to pick up in 2001, but now that they can cash in, they have decided to greenlight it.

While I enjoyed the original BSG, I doubt this movie will be able to best the re-imagined show.

I bet Dirk Benedict is happy.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
Faceman's happy. :D

Wow, reading the comments makes me sad....

...so much energy wasted on something that in the long run really means so little.

If it's successful, they'll probably turn it into a trilogy.

My understanding is the concept was supposed to be a dark and gritty reboot (something tells me they'll now be trying to outdo the series) and the project was dropped after 9/11.

What are you talking about? Don't dismiss it until you've seen it. :D

Actually I was talking about the voracity with which people can hate things that are simply entertainment.

Yeah, amazing isn't it? People seem to care more about fiction than reality.
• What's reality? Excuse me a second, I have to go fix my hyperdrive again....

It's all in your head. :D

I'm actually enthused about this. Think of it this way: If a close-term BSG reboot is successful, then the doors are suddenly open to other parallel takes on the a single story. A Stargate sequel, for example, becomes not only viable but a reasonable concept. It's fantastic to watch one two sets of creative minds grab a core idea and form it into two unique. Sure, it's a cash grab...but how often is a spinoff (or hell, a production of any sort) not an attempt to find a market? If the audience doesn't like it, the product will die a terrible death and RDM BSG will be remembered as the better. On the off chance that the remake is as good as RDM's take, then fantastic! Two brilliant offshoots of one base heritage. Great! More fantastic scifi to enjoy.

Gee, this is worrying in some ways.

This is Glen Larson we're talking about. It has a very high chance of sucking. The original BSG was a simplistic pile of cliches, going back in time to visit the Nazis being the least of them. Every character was a 2D cut out from one of two canvases: paragons of virtue or pure evil. Dirk Benedict apparently thinks that having his character smoke is giving it depth. In Larson's BSG, the colonial fleet is a shining beacon of pure joy and happiness, surrounded by the purely-evil, kill-all-humans-without-a-reason Cylons. Unless he gets some people on board who know how to write a good story with believable characters, I don't have much faith in it being any good.

o yaaaaah anouther reboot.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
I got it, I got it. It's going to be a parallel universe, with all the good guys wearing a four o'clock shadow and black hats. Apollo's nemesis will be called Garth and Athena will be called the Baroness. :D

I'm all for more sciffy...

Excuse me, but that's SyFy....
• Vorlons in my HeadVorlons in my Head The Vorlons told me to.
I dont know, with Glen Larson involved this could suck so bad it will just turn people off to RDM version thinking it's the same crap.
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
I fully expect it to suck
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
I never stated anything about expecting it to be any good, but I do hope it to be. I see no reason why people shouldn't run with trying multiple parallel takes on the same story Audiences are just too damned stupid to use as a means of determining quality on any level, so why should their inability to understand parallelism be any worse? I just want this to succeed on the grounds of letting other franchises branch outward sooner than the prior notion of a reboot might have allowed.
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
My problem with it is that it continues to show that for the most part, Hollywood is out of original ideas. in addition to this i read that they are doing a reboot of the Vampire Chronicles, another Predator movie, Underworld 4 (which may not suck, because Kate Beckinsale will be back in it, and lets face it, she makes anything less sucky) a new Scream trilogy, A nightmare on elm street reboot... I mean come on, are there NO new ideas?
Underworld 4 (which may not suck, because Kate Beckinsale will be back in it, and lets face it, she makes anything less sucky)
"Less sucky" is not the same as "not suck." :p
I mean come on, are there NO new ideas?
There are plenty of new ideas (Up!?). There are just very few people in positions of power in Hollywood willing to persue them.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
Actually that's the wrong way to look at it. Hollywood is not running out of ideas. It's just not about ideas. They are not in the business of coming up with new ideas or innovation. As long as there are people watching them, they will keep making them.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
It's easier to attract people to an established name than it is to attract people to a new idea.

We wouldn't have RDM's BSG, if they hadn't taken the risk of rebooting this dormant franchise. That's why I'm not opposed to this project. It could be considered a spin-off, so I don't see the harm in that. Star Trek's done it plenty of times. James Bond is the poster child of this MO.
