Seriously, this sounds like something out of a Max Barry novel. I can just see something like this in one of his books, with a bunch of clueless execs having a meeting and having the reasons for coming up with such an idiotic name being exactly what Skiffy has actually said. By the way, I'm reading his first novel, Syrup, right now, in which a guy tries selling a new beverage idea named Fukk to Coca Cola. I just love this guy's work.
Its all about brand synergy. Sci-Fi is owned by NBCU just like USA, Bravo, CNBC, Telemundo and about 12 other cable channels. The name change to SyFy is the first in a probably a corporate shift. I think Hulu.com will be the future hub of all of NBCU's enterprises and shifting the names to be similar is just the first step. Sci-Fi has been expanding its core brand for a decade now and this does make sense. Even if we don't like it. The truth is while in the 90s they could show all the good stuff that's just unrealistic now. When DVD's came out the studios saw how much money they could make off their library that royalty fees for those movies went up. SciFi just couldn't afford those prices anymore and started having to fill the programming holes. Thats when they discovered that they could make a similar profit margin with original programming as they would showing great old sci-fi movies. The wrestling show is probably started out as trying to keep Vince happy and keep raw on USA which is practically a money generator for USA. What does wrestling have to do with USA's programming anyway? Not much but it brings in the bucks. Same with ECW which is the show on Sci-Fi. The truth is us geeks who love this stuff are probably too much of a niche market to sustain a full fledged channel anymore. Back in the day we could since there was far less competition and the cable channels weren't making original programming. Anywho just all my opinion.
Sanfam I've got it, its time for a new niche channel:
ScifiSpeedTechVision (SSTV)!
Since the noonne believes the core elements of any of these channels is strong enough to stand on its own, combine them into one channel that took the hardcore elements of Speedvision Tech TV and SciFi! My TV would never change channels...

Random ChaosActually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
If they'd been honest and called it Shite then people might actually look at it.
Oh well, the only thing they show over here is reruns of Angel and Medium. The rest is just stupid disaster stuff with silly names and questionable appearances by actors who obviously prefer the paycheck over a dip in their rep.

How about STFU (not aimed at you) or just FUBAR. You know what, they should go with the last one.
FUBAR: Fantasy Uber Barf Again Reruns

That's the issue, really. The name change is the next major shot in their attempt to not be a scifi channel.
I can see it now...
NEXT ON SYFY, A NEW "OW, MY BALLS!"
