Close proximity? Didnt they zoom right out of the galaxy before they did the zoom in?
Yes, but if Cylon-Earth isn't our Earth, it still has to be right next door. They've been using true-sky stars in the space scenes since a quarter of the way through the season (here are some specific constellations visible in "Deadlock," and we've all heard about Orion popping up in different episodes), and they spotted the 12 zodiac constellations at Cylon-Earth. They've spent weeks, possibly months, scouting every potentially habitable system in the area, so they should find a new planet... well, within the next multi-part episode, tops.
There is no argument that it was anything short of our Earth. Perhaps not at this present time, perhaps in the future, but it was our planet Earth. Every single member of the production staff has confirmed this. There is no confusion on the matter, no conflict. They made it abundantly clear in the visuals that this was also our Earth in roughly similar plate orientation, meaning it's within relative proximity of our own timeframe.
It Is Earth. End of story. :p
It's also unlikely that the planet was Jupiter, but rather a similarly banded generic gas giant. While it's possible it was, it doesn't really mean much at this point. It was more likely just another exterior shot to show that the raptor appeared and was somewhere safe and unpopulated, rather than at the colony.
As far as callie, she's a maniac. I'll refrain from damaging the focus of this thread any further. :D

In "Crossroads Part II," sure. But the planet they actually landed on was always shown close up, with lots of clouds. I don't think there was a single recognizable landmass in all the shots in "Sometimes a Great Notion" or "Revelations."
I'd just like to state, for the record, that we've all thought of the obvious, tasteless joke, and there's no reason at all to elaborate on that thought.
10 cubits says they will fly Galactica guns blazing right inside that thing.
man i hope so. How much fun would that be.
Vorlons was attempting to point out the enormous scale of this object. If the five-armed starfish theory works out (seems to be the most sound idea, visually speaking), then this station is frakking huge! I'd wager that something will happen to it, but I'm thinking that it might not be a direct assault.
However we did get a bit of rogue dialog earlier that indicated Anders had the capacity to jump the ship at his will. Most likely, this will take us to The Colony, but it could be used as a weapon. The only concern is that Galactica really isn't likely to do much of anything to this facility, if only given the fact that by comparing mass alone, she'd be maybe about equal with the front door (were it to even have one). I really don't think there's too much the bucket can do in this situation.
They already paved the way for FTL being able to cause shit things if used inside or close other ships.. And because the size of that thing, Galactica can fit into that docking bay or hole we are seeing... And when they do, BOOM HEADSHOT! -> Station collapses -> win -> bacon -> end credits
Well since this thing has a docking bay large enough for a battlestar they are going to capture the colony, repair galactica in record time with the help of the cylons and be back in time for the last episode to kick Cavils ass.
Actually making Galactica do one last jump inside the colony could be the way to do it. And I have a feeling Adama will be at the helm.
I made an interesting discovery this week. Was chatting to one of my colleagues at work and she noticed my iPod playing BSG (season 3 soundtrack). She didn't know what it was so I explained away, mentioning the old series. This drew a blank which surprised me (she's 60 so expected her to have heard of the old show). Anyway I mentioned then that 2 of the cast were from the UK. When I mentioned James Callis she went "oh James? So thats where he's been". Turns out her nephew is good friends with Dr Baltar and she's on first name terms with him, been round for dinner with the family etc. Apparently he's very sweet :D Amazing really to have been working with this person for over and year and not know how close I was to Baltar :D

In astronomical terms that is next door :D

As far as what the producers have said about it, they also said we would never see where the Cylons went after the war ;)

It'll still be fun, though.
The waiting hurts.
Ah, I thought it was an emblem. Cool.
