What ever happened to the game?

I've been out of the loop for a very long time. What ever happened to the game after it's cancellation? I remember reading on this site about there being hope, and that the devs had started a company and were trying to aquire the rights to make the game. Was any headway made? Is it dead? Paper or plastic? Finally, if it is dead, are there any plans for other B5 games (besides the mods)?

  • Sadly, $ierra canned it for good, and won't sell.

Welcome to Firstones though, and all hope is NOT lost for a b5 flight sim. check http://mods.firstones.com for more info, and I STRONGLY suggest looking at IFH
    ( http://mods.firstones.com/ifh/ )

But there won't be a non-linear, dynamic B5 Universe with some of the other features that made ItF the stuff of dreams. However, I do agree - from what I can tell, IFH looks to be good. It would be possible to resurrect ItF if we had a good plan to do it. Perhaps, if most of us did the programming/modelling/what-have-you and original crew reviewed and refined it. The game would be produced while minimizing participation the original crew are too busy to give. Sound good?

You really have been out of the loop for a while! Glad you came back!

As for the game: Basically, the Devs ran out of options. Their last attempt to get funding after Sierra refused to sell and lost them their first lot of funding failed.

Sounds good - except that this wouldn't be legal. Personally I wish that I could just FTP the design documents to the Firstones server. My understanding is that I can't do this. Besides Sierra (if there is anyone left there who would even recognize the effort), WB would probably not be happy about such an effort.

On the other hand, if one were to collect everything that has been written about the game over the years (especially recently) at Firstones into one place - you'd have a pretty good guideline.

Oh - and if you were to also take the narrative content of Officer's Journal as a story guide... I don't know who is writing it - but it's pretty close, in terms of story missions. All that's missing is the specific interfaces that the player would be using, which are represented in the Officer's Journal by dialogue instead.

No. I'm saying that as far as I know we can't give you anything from our design work, or from the artwork that was done by team artists, or from the CGI we got from WB, or sound/music files from Franke.

I don't know if it would be legally sticky for any of us to comment on whatever anyone else happens to put together from scratch. Seems like a gray legal quagmire to me and I'm not sure that any of the former developers would have the time or interest, even if possible. I think that all but me have been smart enough to be brave, put ITF behind them, move on…but I’m like a junkyard dog guarding his bone – mind you, I’m not saying that’s good. It’s a bit obsessive, if you ask me – even deranged – maybe twisted – probably quite sad, really. LOL.

On the other hand, over the years, an awful lot has been posted in various threads - not documents - just stuff written in threads here and there by Marc, Dan, myself, John,- especially recently. I don't know if any of that has been archived, but it were all put together in one place...

No, you’re not going to find the code, but enough about what we were doing so that some of you mad coders out there could figure out how to do the same thing. It’s the conceptualizing up front that made it special – after that, just hard work – not that there wasn’t also intermittent, conniving, blood-letting, hell-bent genius along the way – but you guys can do that.

Legal quagmire, eh? Maybe but if the code was written independently, then reviewed by the original team it would give less grounds to claim IP infringement. This is ignoring that conceptual IP infringement, technically, takes place all the time so no one's too particular unless concrete elements are illegally copied. This is okay, because most FirstOnes' wouldn't mind searching tons of posts to find a conceptual approach to ItF development. The backlash of attacking, what would be, a freeware project must also be considered. Such a move would probably attract outside news agencies.

About the music though, I've seen that floating around. If I recall, Space Dream Factory used ItF music in their IFH trailer. Is SDF and sites hosting it risking a legal encounter?

I dunno, I was under the impression that it was mission based - I don't know where I got that from. Well, if it is a dynamic campaign that's great news - it'll be really close to ItF. If that's true, then someone should get JMS in on the seen.

  • Or what if you "accidentally" mailed it to everybody? You could say you mistakenly sent out thousands of copies of the design docs thinking you were really sending "get well" cards or "dear John" letters or other such claptrap. Or better yet, just send them all out and then blame it on Osama bin Laden! It must be some kind of plot to make us all play a game for so long we forget to eat or sleep or drink!
