X3:Reunion 2.0 (GOTY Edition) doesn't come with Starforce and it doesn't require you to have the DVD in the drive to be able to play the game. The latest official patch fixes a lot of these issues.
You still need to figure out how to play the game though. :D
Aye, I have the 2.0 edition. Just installed it too.
I've come to the conclusion that I don't like closed Mod development. Especially those who don't put out anything to keep the community enticed, or attract new developers and artists.
I started out with "normal" difficulty and just did the first mission up to the point where you dock your Argon Buster to the Goner Temple station after defeating those Kaak ships. As long as you don't talk to the "brother" there you are free to do whatever you want without moving the main plot along.
The game is a little more fun once you got some cash and assets. :)
Well, I finally did run into a bug... and quite an annoying one at that... I can't seem to be able to switch back from my freighter to my fighter. When I'm docked to a station, when I try to switch back from my hauler to my buster some part of the game's GUI crashes and renders the game unplayable. When I undock both ships and try to switch to my buster through a short EVA trip, I get the same effect. The bottom line is, I can't get back behind the controls of my buster. :(
That's quite annoying considering that this feature is an integral part of the game. Could be a save-game problem, but still.
The reason I wanted to switch back is to use the buster's wider sensor range to explore the sectors I'm planning to do business in quite a bit faster. The hauler's gear is a lot more primitive in that regard and much less upgradable.
Havn't had time to play it yet though, finishing Witcher first. Hopped in for a moment. It's more demanding than X3 is, but the new shaders look sooooo good close up!
I guess there's no point in me picking up X3:TC yet as X3:R is already demanding enough as it is. It'll have to wait for my next hardware upgrade.
I found a workaround for my ship switching problem... I docked both ships at a shipyard and I was able to switch back to my buster. I also saw how much both ships are worth as a trade-in. Selling my buster would get me 400K+, and selling the hauler would net me 700K+. So selling the buster would solve my current cash problem... but it would also leave me quite defenseless.
I'm not holding my breath on the X3:B5 mod, it's like with most of them, people run out of time and motivation once they figure out it's a lot of work.
Amras: "No one in the core team is running out of motivation, and we have know for years^^ that it is a lot of work! ."
Savotw: "I have a sore rear end from sitting next to my pc endlessly converting stuff from Reunion to TC!! There are few reasons I would stop modding for B5 and all of them would be very bad in outcome...."
I've come to the conclusion that I don't like closed Mod development. Especially those who don't put out anything to keep the community enticed, or attract new developers and artists.
Amras:"It's not closed, we just don't want to show half-baked things. . At the moment we are working on the economy and other boring details. And we do show you the ships and stations we are working on in our gallery."
Savotw:"I think we may show too much. As for closed I can't think of an X3 mod be it Transcend, Battlestar etc that released materials before the mod was finished. And you got little from Ego about TC either in reality. If for some reason the mod was not completed then I for one would release my materials as XSP, but our material should be seen in this mod first and nowhere else. I am sorry it's taking so long, but it is a huge..no mammoth task and we want to get it right."
Well, it's good to hear that the B5 mod is still alive. :)
Funny thing is, X3 is probably as much work to play as it was to make. :D
I still stand by what I said, because I know it is easier for us to wait than for you to work on this project and stick with it until it is finished. After all, as far as I'm concerned, this is what Babylon 5 stands for, no surrender, no retreat. But projects like that are 90% hard work. I hope you guys are getting all you want out of it. :)
I for one look forward to the mod. Keep up the good work.
Well, I think I found a way to get some quick credits in X3:R. As the game is quite difficult as it is, I don't mind checking out online information to get a head start on the financial side of the game.
I've now managed to salvage another freighter. It's the Iguana Vanguard located in the Family Whi sector and as it turns out it's twice as fast as my Toucan Hauler. It seems bigger and better armed too. I believe I've spotted gun turrets on a few key places on the outer hull. This means if I sell off my Toucan Hauler for 700K+, I'll have enough cash to fill up the Iguana with wares and start doing some lucrative trading. :D
I don't know which Ferengi rule of acquisition this is, but there must be one about salvaging. BTW, the procedure to salvage a ship is a bit odd and it goes something like this:
- Approach the new spaceship to within 20 meters.
- Eject from your own vessel (shift-e, confirm) for an EVA.
- Left-click (and release) on the new spaceship, then press the "i" key.
- A new menu bar appears on the bottom of the screen, one button says "claim", click on it.
- Turn around to your own vessel and press "shift+e" again to get back inside.
- Back away from the new spaceship to give it some room to maneuver once you order it to follow you or dock at a station.
- When you left-click on the ship in your cockpit view, a small menu should appear to allow you to give it orders.
Alternatively you can enter the new spaceship and order your own vessel as say an escort for instance. I don't know what happens if you do this to a ship that isn't drifting in space... this isn't a GTA game, so do be careful. :D
Anyway, that's pretty cool so far. I've got two freighters and my buster fighter. It took a few hours to get to this point, but it's pretty sweet. I must say I've been careful not to pi$$ off any space pirates, so far so good. I hope I can get back to the safer sectors to get down to business. :)
Later on you can do it differently....by remotly hacking the other ship....that would be illegal, but so much faster. Especially handy if you are a fighter and manage to capture a number of enemy ships.
You'll also be able ot buy transporters for your ships, so that you can just beam from ship a to ship b. :)
Turns out the Toucan Hauler is twice as large a freighter than the newly salvaged Iguana Vangard. So now I'm left with taking a decision whether I want to keep a faster yet small and well-armed or a slower and larger yet poorly-armed freighter?
I could use both, the slower one would be ideal in the safer sectors, while the well-armed one could take a punch on the riskier trade routes which also rack up more profitable runs.
Dammit. :D
I'm sure the transporters will come in handy later on... I'm just not there yet.
My Advice, larger freight bay, use the cash from the other ship to make some safe Ore runs in the Argon sector, which are quite safe. (Only two jumps from Argon Prime to the Ore Belt)
with that, you will quickly be able to afford some Murcury Haulers, which have a great speed / cargo hold ratio. Use that until you can afford Trading software Mk3, and then let it do all the work for you while you explore like mad.
Get satalites while exploring as well, drop them in each sector so you can monitor prices. :)
Looks like I'll have to keep X3: Terran Conflict a little longer on my wish list until some time next year or until I have the hardware to run this beast.
This IGN review doesn't mention any show stopping bugs this time around. I suppose it all depends on what crate you are running the game on.
As far as I know, the campaigns of X3:R and X3:TC do not really mix, so it may be a good idea to keep both threads separated. The game is difficult enough as it is. :D
Thanks for your advice, I guess I'll do just that, because there is no point in having a fast freighter if I have to make twice as many trips to haul the same amount of goods. :D
I'll have to see if I can use some of the gear and transfer it on the other freighter... but that'll cost me storage space again. Reminds me of my days playing Elite Frontier II... same problems.
Definatly, always strip your ships before selling them. :)
Go to a shipyard, and transfer everything over. Install what you can. Over time you'll learn what to keep and what to sell. check out the Murcury haulers while your at the shipyard, so you'll know how much you need and what equipment to save for once you get that ship. Also note things like Engine Tuning and Rudder Tuning, most important is the SETA drive. :)
ok, they gave it a 7 for graphics eating your system?!? Why?
I can run it at 1776x1000, max details, 2x AA and only encounter marginal slowdowns when things get very busy. And I'm on a 600$ machine I built last year. it's no where NEAR as demanding as say, Crysis. Id put it on par with the Witcher, which everyone raved about it's proformance.
Well, I just went ahead and sold the freighter as-is and I will load up the savegame again to check if it takes into account the gear that is installed or not. Not sure I can use that gear on the toucan freighter anyway, not all stuff is compatible and otherwise takes only space in my precious cargo bay... I could of course store the extra laser canons in the trunk of my buster though. :D
I'm at the equipment dock right now and above is the list of stuff I can install on my buster. I'm not sure if the upgrades are cumulative, meaning do I still need the Mark I's when I upgrade to the Mark II's? I suppose I need to install every upgrade on all ships over again if I am to have the same level of control on all of them... I guess I'll have to start taking notes soon.
Then I need to figure out if I need to be on the ship myself to install all that gear. I suppose not, as it would be quite cumbersome later in the game when you have a fleet of ships.
Still, I like where this is heading... never got to enjoy X and X2 as much as I'm enjoying X3 right now.
the parts are standardized, so they will work on any ship provided they have the hardpoints nessasary for them. (For Sheilds, weapons, etc). Things like SETA, Scanning Extentions, All software, Transporters, etc etc are all stansferable, from a fighter up to a cap ship. :) And you get about 1/4 their value on sellback as oppsed to buying them again. :) (Although you will hit the point that a few hundred thousand credits won't matter)

Got to agree there. It seems wrong to mark a game down for having stunning graphics at the high settings and needing a good system to produce them. For comparison, let's have a look at their Crysis review.
The one thing that you're going to have to seriously consider before purchasing the game specifically for the visuals is the power of your PC. Crysis may very well kick your computer in the balls at Very High settings. It'll look spectacular doing so, but may very well turn into more of a slideshow than you'd probably prefer and in some cases become completely unplayable. On our Vista test machine with a quad core processor, 4GB RAM, and a single 8800 GTX, we had some pretty significant slowdowns with everything on very high everywhere but the most confined spaces.
That sounds familiar. Did it get a 7 for graphics, too?
So obviously Biggles you have the definitive answer that X3:Terran Conflict can be installed over X3:Reunion, and that we can import our profiles into this new X3 game so that we don't have to start from scratch, since you've removed the X3: Terran Conflict thread? It's the same game, right?
Biggles<font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
Well, is it? :D I can hope, but I'm not sure. Egosoft sells it as a separate game. :(
Biggles<font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
I doubt it, as they haven't done so in the passed. But the game mechanics tend to work very similarly between X games. Besides, starting from scratch is the whole point of playing X! You don't play it for the (usually sparse) story! :p
You don't play it for the (usually sparse) story! :p
True, I'm leaving the main quest for later. Never bothered with it in the earlier iterations either. :D

Ok, so, I did the transaction again, selling only the Iguana Vanguard without the equipment on board and I got less than half the price for it in return. That's the bad news. On the other hand this did give me the opportunity to find out that I had a few "fighter drones" stored in the cargo bay. Whatever those are for, they do seem to be a rare commodity in this sector and carry a hefty price tag.
I also did buy all the upgrades for the Toucan hauler and it's now as fast as the Iguana, so that's actually good news, not sure how the Iguana was boosted to begin with, but the Toucan handles like a charm now. Before it felt like steering a barge along the ocean.
I also installed a mineral scanner so I can check out the asteroids for ore, but I don't know if I got mining equipment installed or where I should go to get that.
Some trade items are marked in red, which means, I can't buy those for whatever reason.
It's time to start trading, my funds are dwindling now that I got a fully loaded hauler. I got a few mosquito missiles for protection, although I don't think I'll stand a chance in a big fight.
I'll go and check out the Ore belt now.
