Stargate - Voyager announced

Rogue TraderRogue Trader Somebody stop him...
heres the excerpt from Sci-Fi
After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.

What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.

The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny's original mission.

Challenges will arise though as the ship comes into range of Stargates placed centuries ahead of the Destiny, but only for a brief period of time before carrying on with its pre-programmed navigational schedule. If someone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them, adding to the drama of encountering new races, enemies and adventures.
But now the "Voyager" has it's own will like Moya... maybe even reproductive organs. Who wants to see some more of that horny ship on ship action? Space battles are just a foreplay leading to hull penetration... :P

Surely they could have come up with a better name, especially with a certain other franchise having used one of the words in the past.

I know, its not a very good precedent is it?
  • Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
Yup. Maybe they could have called it Stargate: Generations?

Has a ring to it

Nah it needs something more catchy....like Stargate: Mistake.

I know that I'll watch it when it comes out because I am a loyal fan. Admittedly last season of Atlantis wasnt the best, but to me it was still good, and while seasons 9 & 10 of SG1 werent great (9 in fact was dire in places, but 10 was getting back on the horse at the end) I still watched it because it was Stargate.

But damn I miss the days of RDA and O'Neill :(
  • SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Gekko was the key to stargate's success. Removing RDA from the production process is directly linked to a sharp decline in quality. O'Neill's physical presence in the franchise is secondary to the fact that the actor's sound production decisions and liberal application of logic and reason to story development made for a solidly entertaining program that tended to avoid falling into the common traps of stupidity.

Wasn't that pretty much the premise of Atlantis? Go there, never go home? Sounds like Stargate: We've Done This All Before, to me
  • Vorlons in my HeadVorlons in my Head The Vorlons told me to.
With a total of 15 seasons + movies it pretty much means anything they do has probably been done before. We'll see the same old stories with a new cast. Anyway, what's the point of cancelling one stargate and starting another. They'll only get a slight boost for the premiere and first few episodes. Then ratings will even out to the same aerage level as the two other shows.

I thought this was a joke until I saw everyone's replies and realized it was real. I've never watched the Stargate shows myself. Seen maybe two or three episodes in total.
So how long until they discover a Guaoul (or whatever) played by Jeri Ryan, and she wears a battle bikini and has ancient nanoprobes/plot device?

Guess what's going to happen fairly quickly in this series...

It was the first episode of season 2 with Atlantis, I wonder if they'll last even that long with Universe.

It's funny how we expect so much more from the entertainment industry than we do from any other business.

It's not like this form of commercial enterprise is not run by humans and that is not marred by petty motives, corporate meddling and first and foremost, personal incompetence, arrogance and jealousy.

I don't know why we always seem to start from the assumption that they care about the viewers.

They don't. It's kind of cute to think that, but no, they definitely don't.

    what you say?!

    For great justice!!!

Stingray, depends on who you look at. If it's the network execs then yes, they're only interested in the numbers (profit and ratings). Now you would think they would realise that quality entertainment would give them more of that but no.

Still, some of the creative people and the cast members do care about the viewers, the ones who realise that without those people, there would be no show and they wouldn't have a job. Joss Whedon and the people who have worked for him come to mind specifically but there are others.

Unfortunately, it seems there are just as many (if not more) writers who think their audience consists of mindless idiots, and that these are the ones the execs like.

I still maintain that we should introduce these executive fuckups to about a kilo each of C4......or Tyvar.....either way the results would be the same

I agree. However, I wonder on many of these types of shows how much blame can be placed on the writers. For example, a certain Star Trek with a female captain was criticized by many fans (including myself). Yet, were the writers to blame for the quality of the show (or lack there of) if the executives at the network wanted the series to go in a certain direction? After all, writers and even producers are at the mercy of what the people at the top want to see. With Voyager, I imagine that the execs wanted the show to be a sci-fi action hour that anyone could tune into and understand what was going on, even if they were only slightly familiar with the franchise. That was the demographic they were going after and the writers didn't have anything to do with that. They can only write shows that the powers that be want written. I for one was extremely disappointed with how Voyager and SG1 (seasons 9 and 10) eventually turned out. But I now realize that I cannot fault the writers too much because they were working within the confines that their respective studios created.

That's what's always bothered me, when the writers' hands are tied and they have no creative freedom. I wish there could be a rule that studio execs have to be of a certain "fan-type mind" before being allowed to be execs.
  • ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
I'm pretty sure if that happened the universe would implode
  • Rogue TraderRogue Trader Somebody stop him...
Lets not forget that when SG-1 started it was giving an unprecedented commitment by the very same EXECs everyone wants to blame - 144 episodes over five years. This allowed them to develop story lines and take their time. Which is why the first five years are so much better then anything that came after.
