Italy's Aircraft Carrier going to the War has an interesting name...

"Among the forces Italy will place at Washington's disposal are the aircraft carrier Garibaldi, with Harrier jump jets and attack helicopters, transport and fuel supply planes, and about 1,000 troops to be employed in escort and humanitarian missions."

The flagship of the Italian Navy is the aircraft carrier MM Garibaldi, built by Fincantieri of Genoa and commissioned in 1985. Garibaldi (C551) is classed as a CVS - Aircraft Carrier ASW (Anti-submarine Warfare). The ship is capable of carrying 18 helicopters or an air squadron of vertical or short take off and landing (VSTOL) aircraft.
    ---
Not much of an aircraft carrier. Its like the Soviet Kiev class or British Invincible class (with the ski jump bow) that can only handle VSTOL aircraft like the Harrier or Yak-34 / 141 and helicoptors.

Don't you all know who Garibaldi was? The name has history, but I wish not to elaborate on it just yet.

Well actually, I don't. I did know it has a history, just not what it is.

I believe he led some kind of rebelion in 17th or 18th C. Italy, I might be wrong.

Garibaldi led the Red Shirts and helped to unify the Italian States into present day Italy.

  • Actually, the Guisseppe Garibaldi, as a CVS, is probably going to be deployed in the Mediterranean. Or not at all. If it were to be deployed, it'd be to replace existing forces that are now being sent to the Arabian Sea, but that seems unlikely. And Aircraft Carriers don't serve in NATO's STANAVFORMED.

Likely, the Guisseppe Garibaldi would just continue on normal exercises and Italian fleet requirements.

Though, it would be interesting if the Italians deployed the Vittorio Veneto, though again, I'm not sure if there's anything she could really add to the Naval forces already in the Arabian Sea. USS Kitty Hawk (being used as an oversized LPH), USS Carl Vinson (to be replaced by USS John C. Stennis), USS Theodore Roosevelt, USS Peleliu ARG, USS Bataan ARG, and possibly one other ARG, I can't remember which (I think it was USS Essex, but I'm not sure), as well as the British Naval contingent in the area, headed by HMS Illustrious and HMS Fearless, are more than enough, and they're mainly being used as bases for either ground troops, or floating airbases.

Frankly, I don't see why Italy would really deploy it's Naval forces in the region. Then again, I'm not privy to all the strategic necessities of the many ships already in the area. After all, five Canadian warships (one of which is part of JCSBATGRU, or John C. Stennis Battle Group) are in theatre, or en route, and so too with three Japanese warships, their first deployment outside of Japanese waters.

Hell, I heard a rumour that we may even be seeing Dutch ships deployed, so I dunno. Watch this space.
