Photoshop question

Yeah so I thought I'd do the "Joker" effect on a few of my pictures and it seems my tools keep freezing. After a certain amount of time none of the other tools will work except for the movement tool. Getting really pissed off because I not only have to exit the program but need to restart the computer as well otherwise it will keep on doing that. I am using Photoshop CS 3. Never had this problem with any photoshop before that.
