Possibly selling a laptop...

Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
I might be selling my backup laptop, i'm trying to find out if there is any interest, and how much you'd be willing to pay for it.

It's an HP Pavillion xt512, 15 inch 1.8ghz, 1gig of ram, only a 20 gig HD in it, (but its an easily replaceable HD) legal copy of Win XP Home, brand new battery (just bought it last year direct from HP)

The only thing thats wrong with it, is that the connector for the Power Supply is a little loose, so you have to watch while charging it to make sure you dont knock the power cable out.

I'm still not totally sure i want to sell it, but, maybe....

There you go, Jack. :p

Well, I sure as he11 won't be buying it, just the shipping cost from "somewhere near Betelgeuse" are too pricey for me.

Considering the specs you might want to consider giving it away to someone in your family. Gifts like that can go a long way. :D
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
The only person in my family who could make use of it, would be my 19 year old daughter, and she's earned no good gifts, as she is currently busy being a total pratt.

Sure... pawn me off onto an XP home laptop... :p :D

Actually, I might be interested... How much?

20 Gig isn't too bad really for my purposes, since it won't be a lightwave machine or anything. I have a few purposes for it involving MS word, Web work, and offload of DigiCam pics.

It has an internal NIC yes?
How crippled is XP home as far as networking and all that crap?

Does this model have a floppy drive in it (I really need that...) ?
Does this model have 1394 firewire (doesn't have to, just wondering ;) )?
• Does it have Wireless? USB 1.1 or 2.0? I tried to look for the specs, but the hp site gave me some weird model numbers and google/yahoo/ask just kept giving me batteries....
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
It has a built in NIC, built in floppy, has what looks like 1394, i've got a wifi card I can toss in with it, i've never had a problem with it with Xp Home., and i used it basically like you would, word/web stuff, digicam pics.

It does only have USB 1.1 however. and one of the 2 PCMCIA slots doesn't work (the upper IIRC)

as for price, i'm trying to figure out what its worth, i mean, 4.8 billion dollars would be nice, but i thinkt hat might be high.
• Jack...if it's just used for that, go with Ubuntu Linux and OpenOffice... :D I always look at the specs, not the OS. :D
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
I was gonna say... after all, this laptop also has XP Home. It just never gets used. :)
and one of the 2 PCMCIA slots doesn't work (the upper IIRC)
Are you sure it even exists? :p It's been quite common for many years now to only provide one PCMCIA slot, but have the space for another above it so that double-height cards still fit, so you end up with what looks like two slots, but one of them doesn't have any pins.

USB 1.1 only kills off a couple of my Flash Drives as being unable to use them, the rest sounds fine. You sure it's only USB 1.1 if you have a 1394 in there too?

Any who... Currently I don't need PCMCIA, but Iguess it's about time I learned about wireless networking and stuff...

:p
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
I'll double check on it, im almost positive its usb 1.1.
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Heh, I thought sure the IWill XP333r mobo was USB 2.0, guess not, seems the Flash drives I spoke of will work at the reduced rate. XP says I have four low speed ports.

eh... they work so whatever

:D

Imagine windows 98 or ME networking and take away the ability to join a domains. Very basic networking, it can run on a workgroup and thats about it.

That's actually very common on low end machines (or was, anyway). My laptop has firewire but only USB 1. I had to buy a USB2 PCMCIA card before I left NZ so I could use my external hard drives at a decent speed.

I may be interested in it as well. Wanting to start taking classes again at one of the local colleges but I wanted something along these lines purely for portable word processing, etc. WiFi would be required, but other than that, it'd definitely be getting ubuntu intead of any M$ products. PM me if Jack ends up not wanting it. =)
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Actually, I think I'll step aside for now...

;)

Cheers!

While it is portable, it's not exactly Light. prolly weighs about 8 pounds. Just as a warning..
• MelkorMelkor Elite Ranger
Thanks Jack, though if you have a use for it, I say go for it. I'm not planning on starting classes until at LEAST next summer, if not later depending on $.

Still, thanks though.

As far as weight, that's really not a factor to me. I'm not going to be a full time student so I don't have to worry about lugging it all over campus or anything like that. Just looking at a few classes to start with and go from there.

Actually, they changed the name to "PC Card" about 5 years ago because a complex acronym like PCMCIA was too hard to market. They also updated the spec at the same time, so PC Card cards will not work in PCMCIA cardslots, though PCMCIA cards will work in PC Card slots. Therefore I highly doubt he has a PCMCIA cardslot :)
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
They've changed again, now they have ExpressCards, wheeeee.
• Here is a public service announcement from Phoenix Technologies Slicing.

To the makers of computers and what not.

-Trident-
We love advancing technology, we really want to see like crystal drives and computers who can talk to us. But we do ask of one thing. KEEP A FRACKING STANDARD! We know you think were made of money. You think we can keep up. If I had the money to keep up with your constantly changing technology, I would hire a hitman and shoot every damn fool who thinks of a new and exciting technology that no one can find a damn thing for! For example.. I go onto Tigerdirect.com... what do I find for Express card.... um.. 2 wireless n cards... that's it? No USB2.0, or firewire, or SATA adaptors, or a hard drive, or... nothing. The only express card things I've seen is wireless N cards, and tv tuner... wow what a such a waste of brand new technology. Man what's the next thing you guys going to come out with? A card that you need to dip in crap to get it to run? A high definition computer system that requires two 220 volt outlets? Oh I know, a solar powered screen wiper that requires usb 3.0 that isn't backwards compatiable. Or perhaps a keyboard that wraps around your fingers... oh wait... You already made that one, it's called the fracking power glove you morons!

Anyway. Thank you for all this advanced shit that we all have a hard time figuring out, and a hard time trying to get to work with Microcraps new OS that even prevents the USER from trying to use it, and thank you for all the psyocologist and doctors visits we have to make because of your great and ever changing products.

**grabs every copy of Vista, and the only exisiting express cards. Pours gasoline all over them, places ten pounds of c4 on them, then tosses a bottle of nitro onto it while pressing a button for the c4.** TO HELL WITH THEE YE DEVIL BASTARDS!!!
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
You can buy Cingular Cellular Expresscards (oh sorry AT&T) so add that to the list of 3 cards you can get. heh
