Because they can't find enter!
And this is wrong with enter.
... for easy Ctrl+Alt+Del combo?
Exactly but for completely different reasons among other things. Very strong corporate policy to lock your computer even if you walk away from it for 30 seconds ;) Comes in handy ctrl-alt-del, enter.
BTW, That enter/backslash layout is not an MS specific thing. Its the most common layout of 99% of standard US English keyboards.
Yep, I have a few old AT keyboards with the layout you describe which are about 10 years old. It hasn't been too common for quite a while.
Lol! Here we are arguing about keyboard layouts. It seems obvious that what we really need are not keyboards that can display images on the keys but keyboards that can be programmed to reorganize their keys in different layouts :D

I had the same problems at an internet terminal at a bar (yes, a bar) in Berlin when I visited in 2003. Half of the keys are in the right places, but the others? Arg! :D

Perhaps this task could be achieved by...having small displays in the keys to change which key that particular locations represents? ;)

No no no, you're not following me :D Changing the key assignments is easy. The physical layout needs to be able to change. Want one huge honking enter key instead of a thin long one? Prefer one long delete with no insert or standard insert plus delete? Get it? :D Maybe something like a touchscreen keyboard where the entire layout can be displayed any way you want it? Although that would be uncomfortable. Hmmm....

This could be resolved by using hundreds of smaller "displaycaps" and keys, each with small amounts of tactile feedback. an image would be displayed in the form of a number of these miniature keys, and the user would hit the region inside this image. Think this exact keyboard, but with keys about 1/8th the size and tons more numerous. You'd get the benefits of a touch screen with the added bonus of tactile feedback and near infinite reconfiguratibility.
It should be fairly affordable by the third generation or so. I'd love to get one, but it'll have to wait just a bit longer.
There may be a lot of criticism at the price, but consider that this firm went a long way to create a very unique product which most others thought was beyond our current ability to manufacture.
Wow! I thought that keyboard much like this thread, had long sunk into oblivion! According to that site its 1200 Euro so thats over 1500 dollars. I'd like one but I think I'll pass for now. Maybe they'll be cheaper in later generations but I'm going to wait around and see if they make it past the first.
Oh, and I still hate the backslash next to the shift and large enter keys :P
May I suggest Überkeyboard or Das Keyboard to you people? :D
I think they are on too something. If the entire world spoke one language instead of 20,000+ languages, the world would be at peace. A Russian or Chinese service member on any militrary station on any workshift could use their terminal too extreme effectancy. life support , weapons, what ever. American english is easy on this.
Stupendously expensive profit making gadget just as expected. Nothing new in todays world. I hope no-one is buying that thing, but knowing how people are it probably still sells like milk for those who have the money to spend.

Also, E.T., is that one of those silly european keyboards which repeatedly confuse me by moving things around?

As long as I get to choose, I'm not changing back to using the original over the ergonomic model. ^^
