I think I can hear a few million South Koreans about to storm to the shop ;)

It's about time, haven't touched a Blizzard product since the original Starcraft and the expansion that is.
• Vorlons in my HeadVorlons in my Head The Vorlons told me to.
YES!!!!!!!! Its not an MMO!!!! I had read rumors earlier that Starcraft 2 was going to be announced and it was possibly going to be an MMO. Had they made me wait about 10 years for this and not continue the story campaign I would have been a tad pissed.

Hmmm... I may have to upgrade my PC sooner than I thought. :D

SWEET!
• EclecticonautEclecticonaut Elite Ranger
I'd guess the product launch will be delayed to Q4 2007 or Q1 2008 so you really won't need to think about upgrading just yet... it could even take place when the all new Socket H (715) and Socket B (1366) Nehalem processors come out.

uh, your high if you think it will be that soon. Space Ghost, you may want to wait a nice long time for that upgrade. This is Blizzard we are talking about here. Its usually 2+ years from announcement to completion.

But you're forgetting the fact that they're already worked with this project for several years and with a bigger team and massively superior computing power than in the past. You're probably right about not having this finished within 2007, but H1 2008 is IMHO perfectly feasible.

Ok, the trailer brought tears to my eyes. Im happy. :D
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
If they have a good single player campaign, like SC1 did, I'll be happy. I couldn't care less about multiplayer, that's what TA and SupCom are for. :)

I'm not expecting it for at least 3-4 years from now.

You can find the CGI trailer they showed on the website, its much higher quality than the YouTube version and there's a gameplay video supposedly going to be made available tomorrow.

Man, after reading stuff from the people who seem to be blizzard's target audience I'm not even sure I want to touch the game.

The mere fact that B.net kiddies play the same game makes me all icky.
• Vorlons in my HeadVorlons in my Head The Vorlons told me to.
I doubt the game will be terribly taxing on system requirements. I haven't played blizzard games in a while but their tendency usually is aim low on requirements make sure everyone can play (translated "buy") the game. I would be more worried about how it handles when you have massive amounts of units on screen.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
I don't play Starcraft or Warcraft3 with random online people, they have tantrums if you don't give up when you start to lose. Empire at War has the same problem, it's fun to deliberately annoy them by fighting to the last ship ;)

If you can find a few friends to play with/against, then the whole experience is a lot of fun.

I wouldn't worry too much about the number of units, games like Battle for Middle Earth can have thousands on screen and the requirements for that game will probably be about the same (which will be nothing by the time Starcraft 2 is out)

Well, I was thinking this was going to be released sometime later this year. But, as many of you pointed out, it will likely be some time before it hits the shelves.

However, I still need to upgrade at some point. My system is really starting to show signs of age, especially when it comes to games. Unfortunately, I need to upgrade almost everything to be current: motherboard, processor, memory, power supply, and video card.
• well i seriously doubt (and hope) that the game will take longer than a year to hit the shelves. it's been 8 years since the expansion for the original and now finally the announcement - do you think they want to anger that many koreans (and 1 utterly hyped austrian) by needing 2 years from now on? :D they sure as hell got the money to spend on a larger team *wink wink WoW*

about B.net... if you take that as a measurement of a games quality then you should go and hide ;) bnet is full of very very dumb people which have to pay very very little money to be able to go on there to "chat" and pretend. i've been on and off bnet for 9 years and you will find a lot of decent people on there, just not in "public places" where a/s/l is the ruling factor

oh and i just found that quote from a blizzard panel discussion:
Development on StarCraft 2 began shortly after WarCraft 3: The Frozen Throne finished production. For those who don't know, that means SC2 has been a work-in-progress since 2003.
Those of you who think it will take less than a year, your nuts. Look, my closet looks a shrine to blizzard, I have every game they have made as far back as the Lost Vikings. Development has taken longer and longer on each proceeding game. They are simply making the announcement that StarCraft II is in production. They don't have a date set yet.

Compare this to the launch of Diablo II, where they announced a date, and let stores take preorders. I had my copy of Diablo II preordered for 9 months. They have no date yet set for StarCraft II, that leads me to believe its still a ways out. Blizzard is not like 99% of other game manufacturers out there, they flat out refuse to ship an unfinished product.

The other way I know we are more than a year out. The average Blizzard beta test lasts at least 6 months if not 9 months. I got into the beta for Diablo II very late (last 2 months), the beta for Warcraft III mid way through (about 4 months) and the beta for WoW at beta 1 (approximately 8 months prior to launch). The beta is not even ready yet. That means they are still in Alpha stage.

Im telling you, 2009 is a conservative estimate.

I've waited 9 years. Whats another 1 or 2.

So, what does G G mean? Good Game?
• CiberCiber Earthforce Officer
yeah whats gg? anyways i think there is bigger question here , the game will be able to surpass its predecessor (SC 1?) or will it end like just annother boring sequel, so far other games like supreme comander and comand conquer 3 are making a lot of noise and as i can see in those videos i feel that blizzard is a little behind those games

i think that the most important here is how entertaining the game will be...
• HuntSmackerHuntSmacker Firstones Ambassador to Starcraftia
Yep, Good Game (We had a good time..)
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Starcraft 2 doesn't need to be revolutionary. It just needs to be fun. The original game was great for brisk-paced slaughterfests, and it seems like this is going to be a perfect successor. It's going to be like the good 'ol days all over again. The best part is, the top players are still the same. SupCom (TA), Starcraft 2 (SC), and C&C 3 (C&C:TS). Though I have somehow not managed to play C&C 3 in any form, it's supposedly quite enjoyable. And while they are all similar in base gameplay concepts, they each cater to a unique audience. Not too much direct competition from one another.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
I wouldn't mind one of those Protoss motherships ;)

I agree with Ciber, so far we've yet to see anything that really progresses the game beyond the original. The physics engine helps a bit but I'm not sure how advanced that will be. Given that the original game is 9 years old now, they really need to look at some of the features the newer RTS games have now.

Worf
• heck, aslong as they continue the story in a way fitting of starcraft 1 i don't need a new graphic engine to enjoy it
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
That's what I forgot to mention...the story.

Starcraft's biggest selling point was the incredible single player. Six distinct campaigns (with brood war taken into account) and the best voice acting to be found in an RTS. The missions were fun and challenging. Fancy features aren't required to make a better game.
