Need some advice,Guys

I need to set up a message board/forum and link it to my guilds freewebs site.
The problem is my experience with forums is pretty much limited to lurking here at Firstones.Any advice on a good ,free, easy to use and maintain message board would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Good, free. Those are opposites, aren't they? :)

    PHPBB is ok, not great, but free. It's got a horrid admin interface, and constantly pops up new security holes in it. But it is free.

    We use vB here - excellent software from what I hear. But it's pricy.

    good and free are indeed opposites.Been looking at a few phpbb sites,but I figured I would check with all you internet techies before I committed to anything.Thanks for the input R/C ;)

    Iconboard and PHPBB are the two biggest free ones. Iconboard was a gateway of many a successful hack here at firstones. PHPBB is just as bad. Using either means a full-time job keeping up with the maintenance to reduce the likelihood of being hacked. That's fine if you have the time to do it, but if you don't...

    vB, while it costs, is worth the investment, in my opinion. The features are great, and it isn't a maintenance nightmare. Sanfam and I practice the lazy approach to admining, so it's ideal for us. We used vB2 for something like 3 years with almost no maintenance. :)

    On top of it, we've heard nothing but horror stories about Ikonboard. Go with phpBB, but patch it often. I mean often.
