I find these videos both funny and sad...

and the bit I find scary, was I had no idea of the name of the Prime Minister of Australia, nor what he looked like. I don't think I would have fallen for it...but...wow. Just sad.

    While I know most people are not *this* stupid, I can believe that quite a few are and that it wasn't too difficult to get this range of answers. It still makes me sad that these folks are allowed to contribute to society given their clear lack of understanding of it.

    You know, they only show the idiots. If they come up to someone who actually knows the answers they don't use the clip. One of the Milwaukee News Stations did something like this a while ago with geography. They had a map of the US with no state names, and a map of Europe with no country names. They were randomly asking people in the mall to identify state and country names. Wouldn't you know it, they didn't bother to air me giving 95% of the right answers. I missed some of the smaller countries in Europe.

    A couple of years ago, I think it was about 15 to 20 years ago, I remember seeing on tv a report on american teenagers view of the world. They had tested a number of schools all over the country, given them a map of the world with the countries names removed, and asked them to write where U.S.A. was. 60% had written U.S.A. on the USSR, supposedly because it was the biggest country on the map. I couldnt believe it then, but going by videos like this, its not hard to imagine it..

    While I agree that they only show the wrong answers in these programs, the general lack of knowledge when it comes to history, geography, and politics in the US is astounding.

    The problem is that emphasis isn't put on these subjects in school. Why? Math and science skills are more marketable. Therefore, the aforementioned subjects of history and geography are lumped together under "social studies". The result is a little of everything and not enough substance. Even English is neglected. Proofreading my roommates' papers in college was a nightmare.

    I find it interesting that everyone is saying it's just the US who suffers in knowledge of the world. As far as I can tell, all 1st world countries suffer from it.

    I can't say. I haven't traveled, being poor and all. But most people I know (and they are Americans) who have say that Americans have the most consistently unaware and insular society of any they've ever encountered.

    This would definitely be my experience as well. However you can find dumb people anywhere. :)

    Space Ghost has a point about how the American Public education system lumps Geography, History and quasi political science in "social studies". Its really just a glaze over the info and not enough in depth learning about either of the 3 subjects. Personally, if I ever do go back to college, I would like to be a History Teacher. Just not sure I can pay the bills with that job though.

    You have science, social sciences, language, humanities (whatever that is anyways), math all competing for credit hours and all believing they are critically important for a liberal art education. You can't fit everything in

    I have to say that it's not only the developed countries. The "emerging economies" have similar problems, with people being unaware of the rest of the world. In Mexico just last year we had a presidential candidate who bragged that he had never travelled outside our country nor did he care much for the rest of the world (that asshole lost the election, but for other reasons).
    Not only an apparently large part of the Mexican population doesn't learn Geography and World History very well, they forget it after school.

    And we also have those sketches on TV where they exhibit that ignorance. And I'm also sure they just won't show the clips where people give the right answers.

    That video is funny indeed and it is scary that there are people like this in most powerful nation on Earth. However it is hardly objective at all. They must have edited all people who answered correctly during interviews. Besides stupid people are all too common in whole world.

    Also, remember that the joke doesn't work if the [i]audience[/i] doesn't realize how stupid the people in the video sound, which is more evidence of comedic exaggeration. That doesn't quite apply in this case, but how many millions of people watch Leno and wonder at how "so many" people are so stupid?
