Edit: oh man that sounds bad.
And I've successfully brought up Babylon 5 in class twice before.
The first time I was asked why I liked science fiction, so I talked about how some scifi is just about having space adventures, while some is about exploring ideas for what the future would be like. I talked about how the Minbari War was a good example of what could happen if we meet an alien race that we don't understand.
I used the same thing in a discussion about differences in culture. We were talking about how companies developing computer systems for other countries need to be aware of the culture and traditions of the people there. I said how that's an extreme example of misunderstandings.
Science Fiction can do something that very few mediums are able to do. Normally when we look at social issues through a lens of our bias *holds up had palm out* that distort discussion and prevents objective discussion. Somehow Science Fiction allows us to look at issues from the side *twists hand so palm faces left/right* and lets us examine issues and ideas without our preconceived notions and idea.
I haven't had the chance to use this argument yet, but Babylon 5 is surprisingly full of social commentary, even tho it is in the background. One of the things jms mentioned in the script book is issues of race and sexual orientation. He believes that these will become non issues when we stop making a big deal about them. Watch every episode and you will find none that brings up Dr. Franklen's skin colour.
Another issue he mentioned in the script book is sexual orientation (obviously I pay attention to that one). JMS intentionally set it up so about one in every 10 couples we see in the background are same sex couples.
He used aliens as the device to talk about these issues, but for humans he made his points by not saying anything at all.

Fuck them anyway they're all dope addicts.
Babylon 5 is for losers.

Erm, you do know that almost everything in Babylon 5 is based on human history, right? Like the European feudal caste structure of Minbari society? Babylon 5 was never particularly visionary, and I don't think that was ever the intent.
if B5 is for losers, why the hell are you here?
Yeah, in particular people who have difficulty expressing it.
huzzah!
Babylon 5 is for drunk people who make out with the woman of their dreams, only to have her poanic at the last instant, going hoime , and staying behind, all alone.
LOL LOL ! SAD BUT TRUE.

I think pretty much all of B5 was designed in such a way. Races were based on different civilizations so I'm not sure the intent was ever to NOT make it like that.

WHen you go in naked make sure to apply something like grease or vaseline all over yourself. That way when they call the cops on you it will make it really difficult for them to pin you down. I read on the news some kid actually tried this recently in a high school. They just ended up tazering him though.
HI guys hows it goin?

MY NAMES SEAN CANAVAN I WAS BORN SEPTEMBER 24 1985 havent gotten any pussy since

LEMME TELL YA A STORY
See it came to pass that in the year of our lord 2004 of the 4th month of the 19th day. I was staring at the christian television channel. I was completely conviced that followers on tv were staring at me. So i ran outside fast as good strait down the neighboorhood. I stoped up the top of the block near this little see
and uhh lemme tell ya a story
LEMME JUST TELL YA A STORY HEHEH
Yeah i took off my clothes kinda like this
*takes off clothes*
AND I UHH RAN TO A FRIENDS HOUSE
ANYBODY KNOW ZACH DANON?
YEAH?! NO?!
ok well see i told Zach that i was on cnn and zach was like
ROFL
and I was like what?
And then the ambo came
and there was this really nice cop
and hehe lemme tell ya a story
they asked me some brief questions
how old are ya?
18
WHO ARE YOU?
JESUS CHRIST
And so it came to pass that the pure virgin became a martyr to his own sexuality.
Sean Canavan was cuffed not tackled no. This was an honorable seizure.
They covered me a pure white robe made of some kind of thick thread.
And as i stepped into the ambo I looked back and saw a horde of people outside bearing mute witness to my bare ass. yeah funny isnt it?
ITS NOT FUNNY CAUSE ITS FUNNY
ITS FUNNY CAUSE ITS TRAGIC AND I STILL HAVEN"T GOTTEN LAID
SO WHO WANTS TO FUCK?
NO?!
You wanna hear another story?
*walks out of class room laughing manically*

The Centauri were Roman, the Narn were a composite of a lot of conquered "primitive" peoples, etc. I haven't read much of what Straczynski's said on it, but I never got the impression he intended Babylon 5 to be visionary scifi at all. It was a fairly conventional mixture of historical fiction and modern political commentary.

Now that I think about it, he sort of did what Robert E. Howard did with his Conan stories (I'm talking about the originals. Not the godawful stuff that came about after his suicide), using archetypes and such to create backgrounds for cultures without having to explain it all.
I'd say the Minbari are a combo of things the old Indian caste system and the British Monarch. The Rangers being knights. Thats best portrayedi in "A Late Delivery From Avalon".
The Drazi most likely Zulu africa.
