Animated Models of Every B5 Ship
Some of you might remember I did a fan/tribute site a while back that had a pile of animated models in it. I wasn’t totally happy with it so have made a few changes.
Updated the site so it now includes every ship, seen from the series, crusade and films. It can also now be viewed in firefox & netscape – READ THE FRONT PAGE FOR INFO. You will need a high speed connection to see it at it's best.

By the way if anyone, who’s looked through it first, knows of any ships I’ve missed out give us a shout and let me know.
Cheers – enjoy.
[edit]
Around 64 of them have (60k) animated gif’s, by-product of the old original version of the site, they’re about avatar size, bit jerky, but up for grabs if anyone wants them. I’ll stick them all together in a basic Zip, should be about 4 Meg worth. Either PM or grab me over at the TMG public forum – more likely to get me there.

(For use in GROPOS, should I ever get it going again)
Edit: Also, a lot of those are personal designs, right? You should point that out. E.g. the Gaim fighter, according to fluff, the gaim didnt build their own ship, rather bought old ships from the other species, and upgraded them..
Oh, and the ep. guide looks great! The guide to canon bit is also great, but because of it, you should really point out what eps. the models are from (apart from the obvious), and where you got their names from. Otherwise you could be going down the same lane as B5tech..
I hear you though. I was hoping that the canon bit & the other Bits & Bobs sections would be enough to get across that nothing on the site should be taken “seriously”, and it is made up with just a handful of thoughts (like vorlons look like they use biogenic weapons against shadow ships) mixed in with mostly nonsense and really bad jokes.
I really wanted to add in a canon section (have around half of them written up) FULL of references to just the show, but in the end just got tierd of it, and decided why spend the time if only 3 or 4 people will ever read it.
Like you said the Gaim ship is total nonsense. The ship does exist, but I’ll be buggered if I know who it actually belongs to (probably Earth). Mind you, the Brakiri “Arkati & Dikati” are probably just humans ships if anything as well, and extensions of the Maintenance pod model. Then there’s the bit that in the show, the Vree Xorr for existence is never actually stated that it belongs to the Vree, blah blah blah.
Bit’s and bobs also has a full list of who did what models wise, might add in the “first seen” bit for the ships though. And it was real tempting to point out some of the bigger myths and mistakes surrounding the ships like the Iksha battle ring/globe. Everywhere else use models/images showing 12 struts coming of it, there should only be 10 (going by the show). The “Saturn-Tanker” only has three main sections behind it, everywhere else shows 4, that sort of thing, but then my models are bloody far from being perfect either.
At the end of the day it is just a bit of fun though, and should never ever be taken as a serious attempt at explaining things, hence the bad jokes in the ships library reference bit.
[B]NOT ONE IS A PERSONAL DESIGN, there all in the show, check out the screen shots, bottom right of remote, little button. Like I said in the Bits & Bobs, the single page approach is a personal thing based on me being a (old) programmer and not someone brought up on the Net.

Ah, I figured as much (the naming), but since I hadnt seen many of the ships before, I was guessing they were your own. You should just type a line somewhere saying the models are all in the show, the naming of the ships are yours, and Im sure a lot of disgruntled B5 fans will be happy. Its a pity if a lot of people (like me) got the wrong impression, and werent as awed as they are supposed to be.. :D
I just wanted to say that B-Moon354 did hell of a great job gathering all these ships in one place!
Apart from all that AoG junk (sorry for being harsh, but that is my opinion) spread over the net, gathering almost all of the canon ships actually shown in the series is something to be proud of!
We've been doing just the same work now for IFH future release(s) - finding and recreating canon ships in hi-poly models for the game.
We will have something to show you some time soon. ;-)
The MIA bit of the ship page highlights the models I didn't do for one reason or another but apart from them (and the model variations) I'm pretty sure I got the lot of the wee buggers. Read the canon bit in the bit & bobs, it mentions AOG as well.
Seriously though, I wish I could release the ones I did, but because they were created on a package for designing web logos they’re not up to the standard needed for game imports or even video clips. Basically I’m embarrassed not tight. Lol.
Well, I mean "not all of them". :-)
There are many versions and variations of the same ships.
For example, there are indeed (as you stated in the lore text) two versions of what is called Panama-P5 Liner - one with hangar and one without. Models however are different. On the hangered version there are some additional elements placed outside of the hull.
Same goes with what is called Patriot transport - there are also two versions: one with two small engines just like on any EA Transport/Tanker (seen in Mind War/Grail), and another one with same-design but oversized/overscaled engine (seen in Severed Dreams).
There are three types/versions of Drazi Sun Hawks: open engine (Deathwalker), closed engine (seasons 3-4-5), closed engine with Sky Serpent launch pad (Matters of Honor).
There are two versions of EA Atmospheric shuttle (that is mainly because of redesign in Season 4).
And so on... ;-)
Anyway all these are minors, what is already found and listed is simply great! Finding all the "greenships" (skylarks) is a big wow! :-)
I only miss space structures (stations, platforms, mines, etc.) Hope you'll extend it! :-)
I actually saw at least 5 versions of the “Panama” the two main designs with/without the hangers and a few customised with a few bits added on, the crew shuttles (scuttles) just too many to sensibly track down. As I said in the MIA, it would take a brave man to try and list/show them all.
I actually have/made the models for a second patriot, panama & all three of the Sun Hawks” but didn’t add them in mainly because I felt if I started down that path I’d be “obliged” to go all the way. A practise I am fond off but only under certain conditions.
I’ve also made the models for the “Rocket” seen on Mars and a couple of the other things shown in the MIA, but because I had to add so much detail, I decided that they were more my creation than canon ships so left them out.
So, how many of the more “minor” ship designs are you going to be adding in to IFH, or are you aiming for the complete set as it where, with every variation. (big job if your doing it)
[edit]
Re: The space structures. Funnily enough if you look at the menu for the ships ection (the bit with the different race/categories) theres a gap on the far right, next to the MIA, guess what was going in their.
I’ve found/made B5, Drazi Ship Yard, EF Ring Orbital Station, Centauri Blockade Mine, Earth Defence Platform, and the Centuari Station. The reason why they’re not there was basically because I got fed up making models so couldn’t be arsed making B4, The Thirdspace Gate, The Centuari Military station, Hyperspace Probes or attempt the Minbari station seen in “War Without End – I”. Maybe one day.
Once we have approved initial [general] geometry that is shared between different versions it's quite easy to introduce minor alterations to it depending on the variation.
Creating initial geometry from the screen captures only - that's challenging task! But model creation process goes step-by-step with our "think-tank" group interfering and making corrections, finding and supplying additional material/screen captures to the modeler. It takes long time but the result is a jewel!
As for our aim - we're looking forward to diversifying the universe with as much ships or variations from the show as possible for it will give the right ambient feeling (eg. placing different transports / tankers / shuttles / freighters around colonies or stations will make them look lively and more interacting), we'll be able to create better mission layouts canon-wise, etc.
How many? As long as we have modelers willing to do it, why not try making all of them? ;-)
