keep in mind the demo runs like crap compared to the latest patched version...signifigant performance boost. :)
And yea, there is a plot. But I'm ignoring it until I have a fleet of my own. And I'm probably not going to stop until I have sucessfully overthrown every government in the game. Then I shall form my own sub governments. One portion will be Babylon 5 space, one will be BSG space, one will by Cylon Space, one Narn. :)
I love this game.Nothing like jumping 12 Titans,5 Pythons,6 Elephants,9 various m6's and a hundred mixed m3's,m4's & m5's into paranid prime to bring a smile to my face. :D
Is it just me or is the Python the sexiest thing ever? I know they are expensive, but I keep selling all the weapons and shields I can from my complexes just to buy more.
I just got my first silicon mine up and running. No more manual cargo hauling for me :D
BigglesThe Man Without a Face
I have a small, but rapidly expanding, collection of 12 factories. Mostly producing basic goods that noone else seems to bother making, but I've just set up my first Gamma IRE Forge.
Now if only my transports would stop getting blown up by khaak raiders... It's annoying to wake up in the morning and find 1/3 of my 30-strong fleet gone, which cuts into money earned and reduces money earnable.
It's nice waking up to another several million in your bank account.
Though more often it's like Biggles' situation.
BigglesThe Man Without a Face
Yes, most often it's a case of waking up and finding you've made just enough to replace the transports you lost. Last night went well, though. I poured every last credit I had into setting factories and transporters up, and woke up to find I have 20 million credits while having only lost one transport. Now I can afford to set up some novas on sector patrols to help prevent future transport losses. :)
I have 6 mil in the bank (Rising STEADLY) with 5 auto traders. I havn't gone to the universal traders yet, I'm wanting to have a nice base of 10-20 system traders in core systems first.
I'm in a Nova Vangaurd with 8 nice plasma throwers and a rear turret. :)
I still can't solo a K'hhak cluster though...even bringing in all 4 fighters. *Sigh*

Ditch two of the plasma throwers, AHEPTS? I assume? and get some Beta Plasma Shockwave generators,
When dealing with a khak cluster, fly towards it and start firing at just about 3.5 clicks away, maybe a little less, since your both closing the cluster typicly flies right into the PSG waves just as it splits, and the scouts start popping like popcorn

I like my Paranid Nemeses with their three shockwave generators. They make excellent sector patrol ships.

I've played around X and X2 for a while and if that's any indication of what X3 is, and knowing how picky he is, he won't even last a week. :D
Someone on another board once said that X3 is a game that you can only play with a dual monitor setup. One display for the game, and one for the community forum to ask others how to play the game and what you need to do to get most out of it.
I like open-endedness, but then a blank sheet of paper gives you a galaxy of possibilities. To me X3 is more like a business simulation first and a space battle game second. And I enjoyed David Braben's Frontier Elite game which the X games borrow a lot from.
What kept me from getting X3 were the initial bugs, right now I'm just waiting for the game to reach the Gold Edition status, with all major flaws fixed.

That's exactly what the X games are. They're business simulations with a story, set in a not-entirely-peaceful space. That makes them interesting in a similar way to games like Civ: it's empire building. But in this case, you're building an economic empire (be it based on legal or illegal business methods).
This reminds me a bit of a friend's criticism of Eve (which interested me in its freeform structure, as a I generally hate MMORPGs). It's basically just an objectivist's paradise: there's absolutely nothing to do but make money. I joked at the time that I'm not sure it's any different in any other MMORPG or real life, but that does seem like it would get boring pretty quickly, even if it is an improvement on, say, Independence War 2, where there wasn't anything to do but steal cargo and do almost nothing with it at all.
So, anyone still playing X3 Reunion? As I wrote almost 2 years ago, I waited for the patched, modded version to be released to the public, which now is called X3 Reunion 2.0 (Game of the Year Edition) with the latest official patch to bring it up to version 2.5. Considering that I'm playing this on a laptop, it's running quite well on minimal settings (of course).
I guess I was a bit harsh about the gameplay back then. Like many games, this one grows on you the more time you spend with it.
I just installed it today and I'm having more fun than I'd like to admit. As I'm strapped for cash in the game, I'm trying to figure out the best way to make lots of it. I read about an abandoned small freighter (Toucan Hauler) that has been sitting next to a large asteroid in the Menelaus' Frontier sector. After searching for an hour in the pitch darkness of space, I tried an alternate strategy and did a quick search on the web to get the exact coordinates and "voilà" I located the vessel in no time. The next challenge was to claim the Toucan Hauler as my own and haul it back to a space station to put it to some lucrative use. The game lets you order ships around remotely so I told the auto-pilot to dock the ship to the nearest trade outpost. It was really nice to watch the ship fly itself and maneuver safely to its space dock. :)
That's where I'm now, not sure if I should sell it off or have it automatically haul goods back and forth and generate revenue for me while I'm doing my own business.
I got 9 credits to my name now and the boot of my Argon Buster (fighter) full of energy cells I bought off a solar station for cheap. I don't think I'm going to get rich and powerful by selling batteries. :D
EDIT: I tripped over my first bug in the game, all in-game screenshots (.tga) turned out black. EDIT: Actually, there seems to be a TGA alpha/transparent color layer (which happens to be black) on top of the picture and when you look at it in say Irfanview the image looks black or in Paint.Net the picture is transparent. In Irfanview you just need to deselect the option in the viewer's properties/settings to not show the TGA alpha/transparent color and then the image gets displayed correctly.

there's a few systems near the core one where you can buy energy cells real cheap and flogg them for a lot of profit quite close. set up a hauler or two to do that and the money starts rolling in. then you set up a few of your own stations and add to them until you got trillions of cash...
i need to give x3 terran conflict ago, it is supposed to have a completely redone interface - which is the one thing that always put me off sticking with playing the x series for a long time in the past
also, if you want eyecandy the xtended mod for x3 is rather sweet :)
The hard part is to get the ball rolling. I'm still struggling a bit with the interface and trying to figure out what to buy where and where to sell it for maximum profit. The hard part is to get the money to fill up that first cargo shipment. Right now I have just enough cash to fill my Buster with wheat, not to mention the hauler itself. :D Once I have say 20K of credits, then I can start sending out the hauler.
Before I'll give X3:TC a go, I'll give them time to fix it. :)

As far as I understand it, X3: Terran Conflict is sold as separate game very much like X2 was to X3... so I'm not sure you can install it over X3: Reunion and hope to use whatever capital and assets you've been able to hoard over the weeks and months of playing the previous game.
Can anyone confirm or deny this?
When I think about it, any self-respecting B5 fan should own this game. :D
Any news on the X3: B5 mod?
Dammit, 200 credits profit on my first trade run with Argnu Beef in the trunk. All this just to get the funds to fill my hauler. That's only one way... now I need to find another commodity to trade on the way back as I don't want to return empty handed to the cattle farm or the sector for that matter. :indyfused
I usually always trade energy cells and silicon wafers until I get money for my first universe trader. Once that one is up and running I just cruise around while the money rolls in and I buy more traders.
A close-up of my salvaged Toucan Hauler... all it's missing is a rotating section and a few phaser guns and the Earth Alliance patch. Well except, the cockpit is mounted backwards. :D
I'm not holding my breath on the X3:B5 mod, it's like with most of them, people run out of time and motivation once they figure out it's a lot of work.
Still need to figure out how to automate the trading process... I left the hauler in the Ringo Moon sector while I'm scouting for good trade routes.
I've still got a copy of this game that was given to me some long time back and not used due to the starforce issues. I have really wanted to try it, but never quite seem have the time, equipment, or will to learn properly.

the X series is awesome because you can always make more money to buy more ships and stations, and eventualy dominate the universe :D
