Tycoon Guy writes "TrekToday reports that Paramount has asked 'Lost' creator J.J. Abrams to direct a new 'Star Trek' film. The movie will be set at Starfleet Academy and will feature younger versions of James T. Kirk and Spock, chronicling their first meeting at the Academy and their first outer space mission. The movie is set for a 2008 release and will apparently be one of Paramount's biggest projects for the year."
When i first heard the news (2 minutes ago), the first thought coming to my mind was "April 1st is allready over, isn't it?". While i do love Alias, and i have high hopes for Mission: Impossible 3 (after the abysmal 2, everything has to be better), he does seem like an off choice... (and don't get me started on the "how spock & Kirk met at the academy" story..)

Well, let's wait and see...

All those experimental years O:-)

What? Yeah Im with you on the April 1st thing there..

Plot:

Kirk, Spock and a number of other cadets are in a shuttle travelling to some training facility when it crashes on a tropical planet.

They must learn to work together in order to survive, while at the same time exploring their past and trying to solve the mystery of a hidden underground facility.
The Variety article made no mention of the fate of Rick Berman, who has been heading the Trek franchise for the past two decades.
Hopefully that's a good sign.

Someone's been doing too much "LDS" in the sixties again. :D

I wouldn't mind seeing T'Pol with bright red hair though... ;) (my kind of Vulcan)

yeah, I read this over at Trekweb. Berman is on the outs, so thats at least one good sign.

The whole Kirk and Spock at the Academy though is a horrible idea. For one, I dont see how they went to the Academy at the same time. Kirk was the youngest person to ever make Captain in Starfleet and Spock had been Captain Pikes's 2nd officer for several years. McCoy was way older than Kirk was.

I dont know, chances are it will get shitcanned just like Eric Jendersons "In the Beginning" Trek script.

The whole "Kirk&Spock@Academy" part might just be something that's incorrectly added to the new project, we'll see when paramount officially it's ... press release...

I was hoping for the romulan war :(

Supposed to be Kirk, Spock, McCoy from what I've heard...

I think Nemoy and Shatner should have cameo's as instructors at the academy...

:p

That could be amusing...

:D

The whole "Kirk and Spock at the academy" idea sucks, in my opinion. There's the reasons SpiritOne mentioned (they were probably not there at the same time), which means yet more continuity destruction... but hey, isn't that what ST's become known for now? There's also the "rehash old characters because we can't think of anything new and interesting" bit.

Also, J.J. Abrams may have originally had some great ideas for story for Lost, but the execution of it in S2 has been abysmal, so I wouldn't exactly use it as a shining example of great entertainment. Apparently Alias was similar...

J. J. Abrams may have a chance of making something interesting.

While I somewhat agree about Lost S2 quality so far, I've read that he has been very busy with MI:3 and has not had any time to work on Lost this season. Once MI:3 work is wrapped up, he was hoping to get more involved in Lost, maybe even direct an episode or two - which is something he hasn't done in a while.

And, I have to say, We Are All Very Pleased.

As for the Kirk and Spock at the Academy thing, I'm not sure about it. On one, I always liked the idea that they became friends on the Enterprise, after that whole thing with Kirk, you know, having to kill his first officer and best friend. And Spock having been right earlier in the episode when he said the best thing to do would be to kill his first officer and best friend before something nasty happened. A sort of "out of the crucible" thing.

On the other hand, it's not like this is the first time "Kirk and Spock meet at the Academy" has been done. Bennet kicked around the idea as a possible Star Trek VI (and he was Mr. "Get the films for all 79 episodes and screen them all to prepare to do Star Trek II), and William Shatner and Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens were about to write a novel based on the concept, which itself came off a rejected pitch by Shatner for a new show. The last couple potential-movies also had similar premises, albeit ones that would do even more damage to the mythos (like having Kirk as a recent recruit fighting in the Romulan War, only 80 years or so after they were supposed to happen). I think they may also have met at the Academy in some of the novels, but I'm not sure.

So, I'm going to wait and see. Right now, what with having no information other than "young Kirk and Spock," it's a little early to pass judgement.

lol, I re-read my post, and what some of you guys said about it... help, Im a continuity pornographer!! lol...

Anyways, other than altering the history of Star Trek yet again, it just sounds like Dawsons Creek in space. Younger Kirk/Spock I cant handle but not like Academy aged college kids, it just sounds stupid.

There is a guy over at trekweb who is writing a TOS fanfic reboot that is really good, he has humanized the characters a LOT and given a lot of story in 3 episodes. He goes by the handle Ensign Row your boat, In the Harsh light of fate is the Pilot episode this is a synopsis of events. His stories obviously change known Trek history a bit, but its done BSG style where he makes the characters much more real, much less perfect and significantly more interesting.

Even if it meant a BSG style reboot where everything that came before is nullified, if it were done with enough class, elegance and brains I think plenty of people would watch and enjoy it. If its just Lost, in space with teen actors, whats the point?

We can finaly see what Finnigan did too Kirk "back at the acadamy".
• David of MacDavid of Mac Elite Ranger Ca
Now, that would be nice, if they worked in Finnigan, Gary Mitchell, the "Little Blonde Lab Technicion" (the future Dr. Marcus?), and various other throw-away lines. It all depends on how they decide to handle it, though I suspect that, at the very least, the novelization will name-drop such things.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
I'd still be interested to see what JMS would have done with the franchise. B5 and Trek are more compatible than say Lost or Alias.

Not sure I like where this is heading. Do we really want to know all there is to know about Kirk and Spock? Kirk the prankster, Spock the nerd....

• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
Unfortunately, that's not likely to happen. DS9 was the bastard, unwanted child in the ST family. It did things like portray the Federation as not a perfect Utopia, have wars in which the Federation was directly involved, have more-than-just-a-little-flawed characters, ... the list goes on. Just ask Sanfam, he's the resident DS9 expert.

I do think that now DS9 is more of an equal to, say, Voyager.
Still, anything that has a direct connection to a starship named Enterprise will be more favoured

though i think those are moot points, Paramount seems to think that the best course of action will be a kind of reboot....
