Sony have announced that they're to stop making these CD's now.

I wonder how the artists affected are gonna react to this, afterall sales of these albums will probably decline as a result. i imagine they wont be pleased!

While I find the practices that Sony does on these CDs abhorant, after reading that first letter I have to say that I have no sympathy for the person. Anyone who YELLS or SCREAMS in a letter should have their keyboard, pens, and pencils removed. It doesn't get a useful response. It just inflames the people you are trying to reach.

Ah, this is getting interesting:
Microsoft said Saturday that it is updating its anti-spyware software (now called "Windows Defender") to detect and remove the file-hiding capabilities of the anti-piracy software installed by some Sony BMG music CDs.
Thats absurd. Whats next? You can only listen to the CD with earphones so anybody who hasn't purchased the CD doesn't listen to it?

from slashdot

Zellis writes "In a press conference held on Nov 18 Cary Sherman, the president of the RIAA, stated in reference to Sony BMG's "rootkit" software that "there is nothing unusual about technology being used to protect intellectual property." According to Sherman, the problem with Sony BMG's XCP DRM software was simply that "the technology they used contained a security vulnerability of which they were unaware". He goes on to praise Sony's "responsible" attitude in handling the problem, saying "how many times that software applications created the same problem? Lots. I wonder whether they've taken as aggressive steps as SonyBMG has when those vulnerabilities were discovered, or did they just post a patch on the Internet?" It seems that the latest spin is to portray the Sony rootkit as no more of an issue than a software coding error that unintentionally creates a security hole. Will they get away with it among the non-technical public?" Arguably, Sherman is right -- but I enjoy much more the fact that this whole r00tkit fiasco has set DRM back by years. Gogogo poor implementations!

Again from slashdot

cybrpnk2 writes "As reported by InformationWeek, Sony BMG Music's controversial copy-protection scheme can be defeated with a small piece of tape. According to thinktank Gartner analysts Martin Reynolds and Mike McGuire, Sony's XCP technology is stymied by sticking a fingernail-size piece of opaque tape on the outer edge of the CD. 'After more than five years of trying, the recording industry has not yet demonstrated a workable DRM scheme for music CDs. Gartner believes that it will never achieve this goal as long as CDs must be playable by stand-alone CD players.'"
• SONY really has no respect for the consumer at all. I don't know all of their past but that last thing with the PSP really infuriated me. I still don't understand what made that "patch" a user problem.

Their warranties are BS too. A friends PS2 broke they sent back the same PS2 in worse condition. Maybe its just SONY America? I can't see the Japanese letting this kind of crap slip through. Aren't they supposed to be best electronics engineers in the world? Hmm I guess that doesn't translate to the software side.

SONY GET A CLUE LEARN YOUR C= buddy!

What thing with the PSP?

I think somebody posted about it on here.
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
Oh right. Well you can't really complain at Sony about that since they specifically say that you're not supposed to run homebrew on it and if you do you void your warranty. :)
• Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
Running homebrew voids warrenty? Wait, how does trying to remove their software void their warrenty. Granted that they can't be liable to anything that other software does to break your system, but Sony should still be responsible for any damage to the functionality of your system that results from their software when it is removed not using their BROKEN tools. What I mean by this is damage caused by the fact they put a kernel hook in...
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
There arn't any tools from Sony, broken or otherwise, to downgrade the firmware. They do not support doing anything but upgrading it via their website. Running any form of homebrew also voids the warranty because they expressly only support signed code and homebrew isn't signed (hence the need for hacks to get around the signature checking). It's an annoying policy, but you can't really fault them on it since if they let anyone run whatever they like they'd then have to support idiots who download and run viruses on their PSPs.

Same as what Hollywood is desiring.
Totalitarian control over consumers and their rights.

And that will happen unless power of corporations and big capital isn't "given" barrel of lead to between eyes.
