I am unclear as to the remaining steps needed. Is this just a resolution or the actuall thing that will head to senate then the states?

  • You'll have to hurry up if you want to burn the flag.
I recommend you buy 10 or so and burn them all at once ;)

Here's the steps an amendment must take to be ratified:

At this point, this has only passed in the house, and now heads to the Senate, where it must gather a 2/3 majority to pass and looks like it may be a couple votes short of doing so.

Once it passes the Congress, it heads to the states, where 3/4 of all states must approve it, either by legislation or public iniative. This is where many amendments die and if I remember correctly, there are still a couple amendments floating out there for state approval.

Note:I woudn't get too excited about this yet. this is nothing new, since the house has passes flag-burning amendment proposals 6 times since 1995. The difference is that the Senate may have enough votes to pass this also, but it still has to be ratified by the states, which is a very tough proposition.

Hehe, I can burn the US flag all I want:P... But to lazy to.

What amuses me greatly is that just a day or two ago, The Daily Show had a gag in which a flag was "accidentially" set on fire to in-no-way seriously illustrate a serious point.

That's not true at all. :)
  • Let's make a deal, you send all american flags you want to burn to germany, so we do it for you.

And we send all those stupid nazi skinhead fuckers to florida so you can shoot them because you are are afraid that they may hurt you because you're yewish
  • I can just imagine tyre-burning, slogan-wielding and generally noise-making protestors...

...under the watcful eyes of the media, sealing US flags into neat carton boxes, writing German addresses on the boxes, attaching stamps, and delivering the packages to a post office.

That would be a novel form of protest indeed. :p

Yeah he was, but he said symbol instead of simple.

As I recall, just about every single state legislature has been in favor of state level flag burning restrictions, so I wouldn't get too optimistic that this one'll die after the Senate passes it.

I sure am glad Congress has solved all our real problems so they can focus on this now.
