Waaaaaay OT: Encyclopedica Britannica

SquidgySquidgy Earthforce Officer
Hey, all, sort of a weird question for you guys... I just don't have a clue where else to ask, and you guys seem like pretty intelligent web-dwellers. If, you know, hypothetically speaking, en route to the pool across the road you happened to come across a complete set of mint 1959 Brittanica's on the curb waiting to be thrown out, where would you sell them to?

Because I could really use some spare buckazoids to help with "exit-polling some Covenant aliens."

I've checked eBay, and done a fairly extensive google on rare/antique books, but no one gives me any straight figures - I've seen figures anywhere from 20 bucks to eight hundred.

It's amazing what people will throw out. So far this year, we've salvaged a couch, recliner, and a coffee table, all great condition, that people just threw out on the sidewalk. We even found a complete set of D&D manuals!

You may wish to checkout this place here: http://www.powells.com/

They are really good at finding the prices at books, and I think you may be able to email them to get a price quote.

    Ah, yes...the trash.

I recovered a brand new set of speakers recently from the trash. They were scuffed up and needed some tightening, but after a bit of tuning, perfect. I've also got a trash couch, and a wonderful table or five. Sadly, now that i live in a college area...it's really hard to pull off dumpster diving/trash swiping.

I did, however, find $35 in fresh acrylic sitting casually in the complex's dumpster :D

I knew some freinds that rescued an old VAX from a trash pile, and rolled it half way across campus to the electronics club. :)

Thanks for the headsup Croxis, but alas they're not looking for encylopedicas. (Sadness as of drowning kittens)

Sanfam: I actually know a couple in Toronto who have a basement full of half-finished computers, scavenging one component at a time from the trash. They actually have some decent working machines now...

Random Chaos: Score! But did it work? :)

There's also a Blockbuster just next door to us, and when they threw away all of their summer blockbuster posters... :D

Well...as far as they could tell the system worked. However, there was no controller for it. It required a propritary device that was broken (thus the reason it was thrown out originally). Last I knew they were trying to build their own to replace the missing device ;)
