things you do for girls...
shadow boxer
The Finger Painter & Master Ranter

she likes chess...
so I make her this :

http://www.geocities.com/craegs/pawn.jpg
http://www.geocities.com/craegs/ranks.jpg
The timbers are Australian, namely Redgum, White Ash and Australian Oak (for the board frame).
I've finished them all in 3 coats of china oil and three of cabinet makers wax.
The design is my own. I abandoned the Knight being represented by a horse... seeing as it supposed to loosely represent a Knight mounted on a horse.
It's cost me $550AUD
(my apologies for the crap images, from a vidcap, aspect ratio is wrong too, they are 'skinnier'' than they appear.)

SB, what type of lathe do you use?
Jake
The board leaves a little to be desired, but... its a learning process. Mk 2 will be even better.
Cooking IS 'EZ'... for once SImmonds has got something right... I wouldnt advise you to bash the culinary arts in my presence... or I will be forced to make you my Lime, Sesame and Teryaki Kangaroo Stir Fry...
It wouldn't be a "One-way" lathe by any chance?
Pretty cool though, I've found wood turning to be very theriputic.

Whatever the case may be its humungus, heavy, carries the biggest bearings Ive ever seen, and you can spin it up to stupid revs with something out of true and it doesnt even vibrate, let alone move. he turns stuff off centre all the time with no worries.
That's the true test of a lathe is how off center you can get with a piece of stock and still limit vibration. I once saw a man turn a replica of an engine crankshaft out of wood, talk about off-center turning...
