wow...I've had hard bosses in games before...but this?

ya know, just ONCE I wish a developer would make a final boss that:
A: Doesn't cheat
B: Doesn't have 10,000,000 hp
C: Doesn't have 20 incarnations of itself running around.

Latest boss: NFS:U, the last race.

Problem: Cheater.

Proof? I forced her into FOUR ACCIDENTS. each accident put her 14+ seconds behind me. I NEVER went below 145mph on the map, perfect race. Each time, she would catch up to me in about 30 seconds.
This is, of course, a game "feature" if you get ahead, the other cars speed up to insane speeds to keep the race interesting. but for the boss, they just increased the max speed tenfold, to make it rediculous.

I won BTW, by ONE SECOND, after numerous attempts. I finally exploited the "Catch up" feature by driving slower, and just sitting in front of her bumper so she couldn't pass. Then getting beside her and ramming her into oncoming traffic, or a wall...and every time she still caught up! bah....

  • Haha, remember the final boss from Return to Castle Wolfenstein? I literally used ALL of my ammo, and finished him off with my knife.

Kefka. No more needs to be said.

I've found most of the final boss battles in games I've played recently to be too easy more than anything else. Prince of Persia and Eternal Darkness had some seriously anitclimactic final fights.

That said, if you want to see a neat last boss, the first Serious Sam game has one of the most intimidating last bosses I've seen in quite some time.

the one screen I saw of a painkiller boss looked mighty intimidating....

like, 40 stories tall intimidating. :D

The boss in FFX, you have to land your airship on to fight. :) Well, one stage of it anyway. One thing I have always liked about the final bosses in japanese console RPGs is that they tend to require quite a bit of tactical thinking and experimentation to beat. However, they also require the ability to play for about 3 hours without a save point, something I consider to be a design flaw when you're facing tough boss after tough boss.

The boss in Xenosaga is quite intimidating in terms of scale.

    I liked the Xenosaga boss.

More, though, I like situations such as Wing Commander 4, where, while there's a boss (Seether), the real challenge lies in the choices you make afterwards.

I quite liked the Xenosaga boss as well, as bosses go. It was very well thought out. I've never been that fond of bosses though, I prefer more interesting challenges than just being shoved up a really big monster with lots of hit points and nasty attacks.
Now the Beyond Good & Evil boss, that was interesting. Hitpoints are basically irrelevant, it's all about all sorts of interesting challenges that test your ability to think very quickly and react even quicker. Just one more innovation in a game full of them...

More can always be said about kefka, but it probably shouldnt be said around children, the elderly or anybody with a heart condition.

Y'know, that's precisely why I mentioned WC4. Ever play it through to completion? That has to have one of the best endings ever for a computer game.

heh.. wow.. I feel sorta l33t....

seeing as I killed Hienrich the First in Return to Castle Wulfenstien pretty easily, third go I think.

I pumped a full load of Tesla cannon into him and his bitches, then 300rds of Venom Cannon, and then 'woofed' the sucker with my flammenwaffer with about 50 units of juice...

...and lit my stogie off the charred corpse :)

and I had a full load of 9mm and 7.62 ammo, panzerfausts etc etc etc etc...

the Teslas the go with him, seeing as the arc splash wastes Ms Insta-Satan-whore and the dark knights. What I find amusing is the Dark knights are about a 10th the strength of the Ubersoldats they were created from.

(sombody should introduce ID software to the concept of a load impediment btw :) )

Incidentally, Fire Warrior, another pro-skin for the quake 3 engine is well worth playing, if only for the cool weapons. The Tau railgun is great. It's like the laser cannon thing in quake 3 without the stupid recharge and it carries a scope... talk about death from a long way away..:) Cant wait to find someone to deathmatch Firewarrior with

Well, let's just say that I was a lot overzealous about killing Nazis throughout the rest of the game... ;)

I wanted to wax eloquently about Wing Commander IV, but I got distracted by thinking about the Banshee and drooling :D

mmmmm Banshee.... I think its my favorite Wing Commander space craft of all time.
  • BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
Did you typically use the four laser cannons, or the scattergun?
  • You know, there's actualy a way to get the last boss in Return to Castle Wolfenstien to kill himself. I've never played all the way to the boss, but my dad had a freak accident where the boss droped sections of the ceilings on himself. He's never been able to duplicate it though.

Wing 4 is probably the best in the seiries. I was a little disapointed in the plot for Prophecy. All pretty, no content.
  • BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Freespace 2 had a good boss system. No boss, really. :) Just a really really cool last mission.

    I once took out a sathanas juggernaught by myself....in a FIGHTER. :D

oh man did that take ages. took out the engines first, then the turrets, then every other system on it, and just started shooting missiles at it like crazy and reloading alot....ALOT.

actually, I can't remember if I actually killed it, I had it down to a few points, but I can't recall the explosion. maybe I got bored....

Yeah, I loved the Freespace 2 last mission. I remember the first time when I flew around like crazy shooting at stuff, and I was too far away from the jump node to reach it in time.
  • I personally really like the last mission in the first freespace. The subspace thing was a trip.

You cannot kill capital ships in a fighter. You need bombs or other capital ships to do the trick. Or Trebuchet torpedoes.

FS2 does have two endings. :)
  • You can kill cap ships with regular guns and misslies from a fighter in Freespace. The Lucifer was the only one that you couldn't. It just took a really long time.

We're now talking about Freespace 2.

And it's really impossible to destroy capship with fighter.
Itried to that in one mission inside nebula where you're against those stealth fighters. That SCv Moloch was impossible to destroy, it got it down to couple percent but after that I shooted it one hour and didn't manage to destroy it.
But Sathanas can really be destroyed with bombs. After you've taken out it main beams just order everyone to ignore it. (so that Colossus doesn't shoot it) :D

Freespace 2 had it hardcoded that you nee bombs or cap ships to kill anything bigger than a cruiser.
  • JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
I took out a Star Destroyer in X-Wing once...

It took ages to do it... I killed the Shield/Sensor globes on the Con Tower first. Then the engines, then picked off the laser cannons.

Finally killed it enough to watch the explosion which for it's time was quite rewarding.

I of course failed the mission...

    :p

Theoretically, no, it isn't. The GTF Myrmidon can carry two (if I recall correctly) torpedoes of the strongest type. But I've never been bored enough to try to kill a capship with a Myrmidon ;)

With the time it takes to get a lock, shoot off the bombs, and reload you'd be there forever.
