This is a forum or bulletin board (whichever term you like). A chat room is real time.
Alpha-1: I see your point. I think more people would be in the chat if it was far less effort to get there. Having one built into the site is easier to get to than having to load up a separate program.

What kind of CPU crunch and bandwidth are you talking about? I have a pretty speedy CPU (P4 1.7 Gig processor) and a DSL connection, if that would help.

Not the user's bandwidth, but rather the server's. Perhaps with the new server, we could install one?
I really don't care much for java clients, due to how annoying they are, but ifthe majority wants one, I will see to having one set up.
web based or java chat applets simply suck a .... toe in my opinion... mIRC is much better, although there are the little stories about people getting their computers rebooted and stuff... not stories actually a lot of stuff like that and worse used to happen, but if you get someone to tell you how to protect yourself it's not that big a deal... Sanfam are you referring to THE bot? The one that gave me visions of a thermonuclear weapon dsetonating at wheerver it was located?? if so, COOL I haven't been on Efnet in a LOONG time either, it's not being maintained very well, but it would serve the purposes of this board having a chat just fine... anyways,
hehehe
If you could find some shell space, I would move my bot back onto one

I hate IRC mostly cause it's full of dumb @!&#$in' Ops and their stupid bunch of @!&#$in' idlers that do nothing but ASL you or what ever the @!&#$ the request is for general(ly useless) info that has no pertinence to anything in the universe what-so-ever. Why do they do nothing but ASL, you ask?! Because they're too afraid of getting banned by powertripping nerds who get wedgied and beatin' up all day at school. Kinda defeats the purpose of real-time chat, wouldn't you say? IMHO, the big four's non-regulatory policy on the doings inside the many a channel festering inside them is what turned IRC into such a useless waste of cyberspace (as well as a hive piracy and pornography). EFnet and DALnet themselves also lick total arse because you can never connect to them but with the above in due consideration, why would you... Anywho, my vote goes for the Java applet so I can minimize my contact with I(diotic)R(etarded)C(unts). Thank you!

#1 i take EXTREME offense at those comments as i am, and have for the past 4 years been an IRCop on Dalnet,
and #2 you are wrong, Getting on to Dalnet is dirt simple, you just need to know the servers to use (ie don't use ANY of the ones in mirc's server list, since they have not been updated in years)
As for abusive channel ops, So don't go into a channel with Abusive ops.
Is IRC perfect? Absolutly not. but its nowhere near as bad as you make it out to be.
Hey, my intent is not to insult you, it is to bring to light the op/idler infestation and all the other garbage aforementioned. Connection easy? I've tried getting updated servers but little luck I'm afraid. As for me making it out to be worse than it is: sir, I have not begun to rant! (nor will I) But that is my opinion of them and it has been my experience for the most part. If you have had a better experience than maybe it's your personality, luck, ability to shrug it off or the fact that you're an IRCop. I on the other hand get torqued and there are many who would take my stand on IRC for the fact that 90% is as you put it "absolutely not perfect" <--paraphrase.

It can't be my personality, I'm evil and sadistic! As for an updated list of servers, well you must not have looked THAT hard, since they are sitting right at www.dal.net, just click on the "servers" link and they are all listed (tsunami.dal.net is the most reliable Imho)
As for Idlers/Ops just avoid those channels, we would be talking about our own channel, not hanging in others.
And one other thing that nobody mentioned, we dont' HAVE to use Ef, Dalnet or any other, we could just run our own server, Dalnet's IRCD is freely available (just no services) all it takes is a unix box and someone with the knowledge to compile it.
Faylorn, I happen to spend much time on IRC and have never experienced what you have. What the hell do you talk about, anyways?

And next time, please refrain from outright flaming. I call it "Thinking." Yes, it can be a strange new world to some, but once you get into it, you can't get out
Enty, unless YOU really think YOU are evil and sadistic than stop making out I'm attacking you, 'cause as far as I know I'm not nor am I trying to. As for the servers, that may be temporarily true now but when I used to attend it wasn't and I'd barely ever get a good connection. As for starting our own server? Sure, why not?

First off, I wasn't flaming. Never once have I directed an insult toward someone here. Number two, let me ask you this? You, and many others, had a real bad experience, at the Armada Forums and, consequently, ceased attending. However, many many others, including myself, did not; why could that be? The situation here, with IRC, is no different. Some people can put up with it, even like it after a while. Others can't.

Babylon6: I just have a little thing against java applets they annoy me, and are usually not resolution friendly
As for faylorn:
I didn't stay at the armada forums not because I had a truly bad experience, but I found that nothing constructive was ever spoken. Instead of people posting polite, kind replies to the developers, there were 10,000 posts daily flaming them and everything they did. Now, I could not figure out what made anyone want to stay. Perhaps anger release? I don't know. I recently checked back again, and it still is just that. There is nothing worthwhile.
As for flames: flames do not have to have a specific target to be flames. Your post was most definately a flame, specifically calling ALL IRC users pretty nasty things. Enough with it.
Applets don't annoy me in the slightest - seeing as I am a Java developer
As for resolution friendly - its no less friendly than mirc...
A good applet is configurable for bigger fonts and widths etc...
Down to personal prefs. Applets for those who aren't "annoyed" and mirc for those who are...

Damn... It's as if everything I've been saying is for not because no one listens. They only take what I say, twist it, then throw it back in some effort to destroy my credibility.
To address your "view" of the Armada Forums: it is derived from your experience there. Your view that they do nothing but deconstructively criticize and give the devs a hard time or some such is legitimate. It is your take on the situation. I do not agree. However, that does not mean I think you are flaming everyone there. Besides, and this is the last time I say this, I did not call ALL IRC users "pretty nasty things", "sadistic and evil", or whatever else you insinuate I have. I have mentioned my dislike of the majority of IRC more than once in IRC itself. Did I get banned? Nope, they agreed, they thought it was funny. So would you and Enty stop turning this into a "me versus you and IRC" thing cause it ain't. I'm telling you my opinion on IRC as well as that of others and I'm not calling you two "crudballs" nor everyone there "crudballs" because you both think different so please get off my case. Thank you!

The Applet can then host an IRC session on your PC so the fo.com box never gets hit, other than to serve a page containing the applet.
A good applet is the jPilot one. www.jpilot.com
You can see this in action at : http://www.nomad-jedi.com/irc/jedicouncil.asp
