Learn some spoken Finnish!

Here's a hilariously demented lil' monologue for all you people (the two of you) out there who are interested in what Finnish actually sounds like when spoken. :) You can find some useful phrases there like 'Kalju hyypiö' (Bald geezer), 'Iltaloma' (Evening leave) and so forth... and the two most repeated words... you in the back row? Yes, correct. Swear words. :D Anyways, it's pretty hilarious. Even if you don't understand Finnish. :)

Learn the whole script! Impress your friends! :D

That's actually pretty typical Finnish. :o
• I think I swear more even when I'm not pissed. Many have "mentioned" about my swearing. Why do they say that I swear too much, you can't swear too much!:D ;)

Why do they say that I swear too much, you can't swear too much!
Yes you can, if you don't use a great variety of vocabulary. You should avoid repeating especially the word "vittu" because of its multipurpose nature.
• First off, Sarcasm...And the second. I CAN control my swearing but there are almost always some people who like to remind me about good manners and so on...So, it's kind of fun to annoy them

You Finns concern me... you seem to have a very high incidence of suicidally depressed and just generally unhappy folks amongst you. Have you guys all got cabin fever ? Lack of sunlight ? Do you guys use light therapy etc to alleviate it ?
• Thats Just refa

Yes, Refa is definitely in a class of his own. Whether he represents the teacher of the class or its clown, I'm not sure.

:D

And yes, we DO seem to have an unusually high number of highly depressed people here, as well as people that are just plain ol' normal with their excessive paranoia & gloom. I've been watching this whole thing develop for years now, and I don't really know wether to laugh or cry... it's pretty pathetic and sometimes you can really get a good laugh out of it and sometimes, well... you seem to wonder what the heck are these people thinking, anyway. :D

My guess is that we're the prime example of what happens when individualism goes too far. (Rest of the world, read & learn ;))

We live in a cold country with extended history of alcoholism. Add to that the fact that in the past few years due to the changes in our infrastructure and way of life, people have gone after jobs to the major cities on the south coast. And those are generally nice places, but without that united feeling of belonging to those cities. Everyone's on their own in 'em, no-one's an actual part of the city. We're paranoid and over-suspicious too. If someone comes to talk to you out of the blue, you think he's either mad or just on drugs. So people grow a bit cold and only dwell on their own 'circles' with their own crew. So that brings in detachment from the social peer group. And with all the high-tech and Finland's reputation as a leading country, we try to keep up with the pace. Or the companies do, at least they seem to try hard as hell to... And that's a fine way to replace actual social contacts and human warmth... work! And a few years into that, some people with that less-briliiant noggin actually start thinking that this is all that life's got to offer. That we're right, and this _is_ life. So they start to drink, even more heavily than they used to. We work 5 days a week, and most of us drink shitloads on the weekends just to forget our miserable lives. And yes, that brings in alcoholism, loneliness, despair, gloominess and the suicide stats.

So what we've lost from gaining the upper hand in the information society is our common sense. People seem to lack the skill to just come out and face the music, stop for a while and ponder on themselves to see the problems they have and solve them. People just hang on, nobody thinks of why anymore.

Having always been an outcast from the masses and a different lil' lullaby when judged by others myself, I suffer only the mild symptoms of our national 'disease'. Lucky me. :)

On a lighter note, if anyone has the original full-extent mp3 of Chris Rea's "The Road To Hell" with the radio changing in the beginning, you can hear some finnish radio there too for a brief while. The man got it right from the start. :)

All aboard, the train leaves in an instant. Destination: Hell.
• Well, Finns are on the top of the suicide ranks :D

Is it completely dark in Lapland yet?

Yeah, and we are numero uno in deaths due to heart diseases.
We are also third world wide on money spend on alcohol (per capita) and 9th in beer consumption :) (last sundays newspaper had some interesting stats)

Wages in Finland are pretty low, the taxes are extremely high, public services suck and everything is expensive. Money makes men happy, no wonder we are so depressed :vorlon:

I really do think that if youre high up in/near the arctic circle you should do the light therapy bit... its a chemical trigger in the brain... without sufficent light on the pineal gland which is hooked into the optic nerve... you get what was called cabin fever... you get depressed and often suicidal... I wonder... has anyone done any studies on the Finns in this regard ???
• It's not completely dark in rovaniemi yet. Starts darkening about 15.30. First snow didn't stay, Good!I hate snow and coldness

It's not nearly as cold down here in Massachusetts, but love the cold. 50 F is perfect weather, because it's warm enough to wear a t-shirt and not be cold, but cold enough that you can work without overheating. At night, I like it to be 30 or below when I go to sleep.

Here it'll be like, if you wear a t-shirt you will be dead in a hour...

How do you play the damn thing anyway? With what?

Refa: It's Flash. You need speakers and sound.

About the class thing: You are something of a case of your own. :) You know what that means. And whether you're just a bad headcase which you crack yourself to be or another Finn going through that phase we all seem to have, I can't say.

No offense in any of that. :)
• This reminds me that I should have plugged my car for it's indoor heating. It might be minus degrees when I need to leave for school. Scrathching the ice of your windows is a pain in the ass, I usually try to manage with a minumum view :D

Maybe it's just this cold and dark winter is why we finnish have sauna.
And why it's nice to be there when temperature is over 100 celsius. :D
(that's about 210 fahrenheits)
It's nice contrary to -20 celsius winter weather.

There is a systom call S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Which causes depression due to lack of sun light.

What I would due do is drop by you local hydroponics store and pick up a 400 watt grow light.
