What's with the DVD pricing?
Ranger Brian
The Anti-Scrooge
in Babylon 5
I noticed something odd the other day...
US $74 (£48.00) (region 1)
UK £34.00 (region 2) Play.com
EU €30.00 (£19.00) (region 2) Primus Media
Have to admit these are amongst the lowest prices I've seen, but flip me only 30 euros!!!

I'd like this, but I don't want to pay $74!!!
And why is the Region1 DVD so much more expensive then the Region2 DVD?

Good question, I'ld really like to know how they set the prices, as there's a huge difference between europe and the UK, let alone the US and europe!!
It just doesn't make sense.

F***ing Microsoft!
With Win2k you can tell it which region you are in, but you can only change it about 5 times before it won't allow you to change it again

That's nothing to do with Microsoft, that's down to the drive firmware.
And if you don't like Microsoft software, don't use it.

Which works out about £37.00
Not a bad price.

Actually, the region can be set in two places: software and firmware. Win2k probably has its own software settings so that people with RPC1 DVD drives (region-free) can't cheat. This is due to requirements from the DMCA; you want to blame something, blame whoever voted for that.
I do.

I'm using a region free drive in W2k with no problems, and I'm constantly changing between regions 1 and 2.
I don't think it's W2k itself that counts the changes, it's more to do with the actual DVD software used. (But I could be wrong on that )
However if you use a third party program like DVD Genie, or Remote Select, you can bypass the count and change as often as you like.

I was in Boston just last weekend, and I saw many terrible things like that. Even saw DVD's that I paid 18.99 CA selling for 22.99 US.
Anyone who lives along the border, it is well worth crossing the boarder to buy your DVD's. Just don't go to HMV... they brought their US prices with them.
