its a fairly entertaining game to play, no where near as good as starlancer which i believe it was supposed to be a sequal-of-sorts to. the lack of joystick support is a killer to. the story is quite good, but once u've finished the story there isnt much to do. havent looked in ages, but i remember there were a fair number of good mods out there for it
• I had alot of fun on that game...learning curve is near nill...it's a pick up and play sorta game. But good storyline, and alot of fun!

It's absolutely awesome. I used to play it fairly regularly over the Summer. Damned good. Lots of fun.

Heck, I think you only see about %40 of the playable universe if you follow the story to the letter.

how is the multiplayer component?
• find a server you like, and stick to it...has MMO style play online if you are on a good server.

Although leveling up can be either tediously long, or incredibly fast if you manipulate things right...

I remember starting out at lvl one, doing my tricks and comnig back 2 hours later at lvl 10 (The max) and all the people I started with were lvl 2...

so I blew them all up and moved on. :D
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
btw, the Playerlevel is mostly used for things like what ships or upgrades you can buy.

Servers have "persistent" Universes, that means, if you screw with a faction, and then log-out, when you log-in again, they still don't like you. (If i remember correctly... It's been a long time since i played freelancer... hm.. i think maybe i should try again, and put my viper in...:D)
• reminds of my all time favorite battlefield 1942 manuever "Dive & Ditch" ya see ya load your friends in the b17 or if your playing the desert combat mod the ac130 and ya go high as ya can, dive then ditch the plane before they have time to realize what the hells goin on. hahahahaha

oh im such an asshole.

yeah but theres nothing to do in the other 60% of the universe except trade or smuggle....and that gets rather boring after u've finished the story
• yes, servers have persistant universe, but the fractions are persistent towards YOU, not your fraction.

:D

And levels are based on how much cash you have earned...so if you know a fast way of making cash.....

Some of us rather like exploring, finding alien wrecks and secret planets... :p
• heh...who here landed on the all robot planet? :)

And yea, wreaks were awesome. nothing like loading up on uber-powerful lvl10 weapons. :D

Unless the game's changed significantly since it came out, it was just Diablo in space. If you liked Diablo, you'll like Freelancer. I fucking hate Diablo.

From what i can tell the ludology of the two games are very different.

Come on, Freelancer was not that bad. It didn't break any new ground, but it was still fun while it lasted. The ending sucked and I stopped playing right there and then, but it did have its moments. The Dyson sphere missions were sweet.

I liked the original Diablo for what it was, but I skipped Diablo II completely because that game was a click-fest for which those who actually played through will pay later on.

I wonder if we'll ever see a space sim that will have it all, I mean, Elite IV doesn't seem to be coming out anytime soon. Darkstar One apparently tanked, haven't looked at it at all. Didn't touch X3, but there is talk about X3: 2.0 coming out without Starforce, which wasn't really an issue for me, the bugs though were.

Freelancer certainly is more enjoyable than X2: The Threat ever was, unless I missed something.
• I wouldn't have minded a bit more depth to the game, but mods make up for it. :)

And Diablo in space? HAH! Nowhere near.

Yes I did, but forgot about it. Looks very nice and one to keep an eye on.

I'm not too much into MMO games, if I were I'd be playing EVE Online. Still can't justify paying a monthly fee for a game service. I never touched WOW either. Only tried AO and the original GW. Second Life is the latest I've looked into. Not for me really.

The developer is interested in releasing a single player version of the game. On top of that there is the Openlancer project with are in talks of using his engine.
