Lik-Sang Closes Down

WORFWORF The Burninator
For those of you planning to import Wii's from out of your region, it looks like you'll have to find another way.

Lik-Sang closed down after Sony's lawsuit prevented them from selling PSPs in Europe.

Well thats another part of open world wide trade closed off. What will happen next? Uk customers are forced to buy from Amazon.co.uk instead of Amazon.com? So much so for the web giving us choice.

Sony can go jump off a cliff imo.

Son of a...

This is even worse for me, as if I buy a NZ Wii it'll have to be replaced in a few months when I leave NZ.

When will companies stop trying to fit a conventional 20th century, manufacturer->distributor->retailer business model into the open commerce structure that exists today? If companies would embrace the idea of a global marketplace and figure out creative ways to sell within it, then they would need to run around suing some of their very foundations of support.

Biggles, you're leaving middle-earth?

Yep. I'll be taking a (very fast, flying) ship from the Grey Havens (known also by its official name, Auckland International Airport) in the next year or so.

Considering the badly drawn map in the books, Valinor could either be in the states, in britain, or on the moon.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Well, if you look at a map of the world, you can clearly see that the states is not what is to the west of Middle Earth. ;)

Don't you mean this map ?
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
I'll note that a) that map is one of the ones I pointed to, and b) the states still isn't what is west of NZ on it. :p

So anyway, I've preordered from somewhere local now (I hope mod chips don't take too long). Hopefully I'm not too far down the queue. I got an amusing email from them saying they had shipped my deposit, too...

I think the Wii is going to be a difficult console to mod, you probably sacrifice the online features, as Nintendo can keep updating the servers to detect and block chipped Wii's everytime a new one is made available.

If you're going to Australia, then you should be in the same region and that shoudln't be a problem.

• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
It depends how the mod is done. The simplest Gamecube modchip just allows out of region games to be played (which is all I want), and is simply a chip soldered to about 5 points on the disc drive. To the main hardware, there's no difference. If the Wii can be modded in the same way, then it should be fine. Only time will tell.

The other option, of course, is to just buy another Wii after moving... they're pretty cheap, after all. ;)

There's also the Freeloader, a software that allows games from another region to be played ( i have it, and it works with the 1 non-european game i have...)
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Yes. Those are also quite common for all consoles. I prefer modchips, but I'd take a Freeloader if that's all I could get.

That's only the protocol, I mean an alternate network not bound to the internet that we use today.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
i don't know. The old BB system? Do people even still have dial up modems anymore =P

The problem with a new system is that it would require new infrastructure which is hella expensive. Any new network would probably be built off of the current internet.

I do. All my computers have modems in them, except my highest end one, and I have a whole box of various modems, both internal and external. :)
