Lactose intolerance
Lord Refa
Creepy, but in a good way
in Zocalo v2.0
How many of here have it and when did you find out?
How much does it affect your over all life?
And are we racially prejudiced against cows due to our natural physiology?

I guess the reason for lactose intolerance is that humans usually wouldn't consume any lactose after being breastfed by their mothers until dairy products became common.
:)
:p
personally im allergic to nuts, especially peanuts, as well as egg albumen (however u spell it) and a few other things
The jury's still out on this one, but soy in large quantities is potentially estrogenic, so I prefer to steer clear of it when I can :p
I drink milk because it's an excellent and cheap source of slow-digesting protein. It also just tastes damn good.
You forgot calcium.
But most of that what they call as milk in shops isn't good tasting.
And never really liked taste of low lactose/lactose free ice creams... which are still lot better than those anemic vegetable fat ice creams.

The genetic mutation (and apparently it is a relatively recent one) needed to process it is usually only found in those of northern European decent.
There might be additionally other reasons for lactose intolerance of some people, like effects of pasteurization.
I found out because I had "stomach problems" (read: diarrhea) almost daily, and I used to drink a glass of milk in the morning, everyday.
Then I remembered that my father is lactose intolerant, I switched to soy milk and the problems stopped.
Now I drink "lactose free" milk, not everyday, but sometimes (for example, when I want a home-made capuccino).
Does it affect my life? Well, I usually can't order a capuccino or a latte, or other milk containing products, unless the cafe has lactose free milk (which is not so common in México).
Last time I drank milk it made the last few days of my vacation quite uncomfortable (the latte of a café in Veracruz is famous, I didn't think of what I was doing when I ordered, it was delicious, just made me quite ill).
I still eat other dairy products, I just avoid milk. Cream and ice cream must have very small amounts of lactose. Most cheeses have had the lactose fermented out of them.
And of course the lactobacili in yoghurt would degrade it too. I eat yoghurt daily on breakfast, I get the proteins and the calcium, without the inconveniences.
I read the labels of products, just to be sure I'm not eating lactose (seems to be used to sweeten some products). Just a few days ago, vacationing in Europe, I noticed that a bag of Italian potato chips had lactose as an ingredient of the flavoring, I left the whole bag to my wife, I'd guess that even half the bag might not have had that much of lactose to upset my stomach, but I didn't want to risk it.
BTW, it's not an allergy, nor a result of processing. AFAIK what happens is that bacteria in your gut eat the lactose you don't digest, given that they have an excess of food they are the ones that give you gas and diarrhea.
Croxis might be right about the digestion of lactose being product of a European mutation, I remember hearing that Africans and Native Americans are always lactose intolerant, even as children (I'm a mestizo, which must be why I managed to tolerate lactose well enough until my thirties).

Thats the exact reason at My cafe we always have Soymilk on hand.
Speaking of which, i've left 3 boxes of it in the car. and its raining, bleh.

IIRC, there was an infamous study by the USDA, or some other govrnt entity that found that black children drank significantly less than their white counterparts. This was attributed to the supposed income disparity the existed between blacks and whites, thus becoming the basis for a major school milk program. Of course noone thought to ask the black families in the study if they could actually drink milk.
