now what?

I'm at a point in my life where it seems it is getting hard to hold on to a job due to my health.

I'm on an anti-inflamatory prescription for my arthritis, and I just lost a job due to the pre-hire physical due to slow carpal nerve response in my left wrist.

Never mind that I was doing an awesome job and they hate to lose me, and had no problem letting me work the job as a temp.

So... yet another set of differences between California and Tennessee...

One place I can't find decent work, the other I can find it but can't keep it.

I need to discuss it with my doctor, especially since the results were faxed to him, but my question to you guys is, should I opt for a surgery?

It hasn't bothered me one bit or kept me from doing my work, but if it will be a constant barrier to getting employment, maybe I should get on it now?

I'm bummed at the moment...

Later...

Hmm, I assume the surgery is relatively low impact? If so and there are good chances for improvement I say go for it.

Look into the study about placebo surgery too, it may cost less ^.^

Personally, I'd avoid the surgery. Then again, I am actually quite biased against such operations, but it is quite likely you will end up finding a job at some point.

I had CTS surgury about 8 years ago, of course it was done as part of an emergency surgury for something else, but i can't really tell any difference in the hadn that a i had the surgury on,and the one i have not, and i'm prime for an RSI injury as i've been using computers/typing since i was about 5 years old. and that was 27 years ago, ugh, now i feel old too.

I'd have a serious discussion with the doctor, go over risk/reward with him.

as for getting hired/keeping jobs, Get yourself a copy of the ADA and make sure your dismissal does not violate it.

Are they ok to hire you as a long-term temp? I have been out of work for several years before, and man, I know its not fun.

    Interesting reading:

A post-offer medical examination may not disqualify an individual with a disability who is currently able to perform essential job functions because of speculation that the disability may cause a risk of future injury.

Not sure I can point to this, since I was working for a Temp agency and this was a pre-employment physical and drug screen. There was no actual offer.

Nope, they won't even accept waiver's of liability...

if you are ever terminated for medical reasons, it's always a good idea to check the ADA, Mostly because so few employers are familliar with what they can and cannot terminate you for.

Sorry it didnt seem to help in this case.
