Well its in. All the hoopla and advertising and the premiere got... a rather pathetic 1.8 rating, which is likely going to just keep dropping. Enjoy season 3, this will be its last.
I'm worried. The ratings have had a pretty significant steady drop every season and they always tend to drop off even more right after the first episode of a new season. BSG costs a lot more to make than Scifi's other shows which is one of the big concerns. There's been a lot of rumor floating around that this was the make or break premiere for BSG in deciding its future. At the very least this will likely mean a reduction in budget next season. Thats a big problem for a show with such a huge cast, which I believe will be part of the reason to thin the herd this season. If the trend continues of ratings to drop about 20-25% after every premiere, BSG is going to be dangerously close to SG-1's ratings when it was canned. All the heavy promotion it got amounted to nothing in the end. Its just far too late into the story for new viewers in any measurable quantity to get into the show. Most of Scifi's terrible and even embarrasing programing doesn't help either. It just pushes people away from stopping by the channel. Hopefully all the talk of the spectacular premiere will actually bring in more viewers the second time around as happened with the mini but thats unlikely.
Dare I bring up the disgusting infection spreading through the network called Wrestling?
Honestly, manager folks...what the fuck. If scifi actually aired science fiction that people wanted to see, they would watch it. Sadly, we get a network that sits on its massive stockpiles of material which it posesses syndication rights for, things which would easily draw in a substantial population of nerds, geeks, and dweebs. Hell, maybe even the casual viewer might wander by. But when the schedule consists of fadcasts and other "topical" programming, it loses touch with the audience.
Yeah, I've been wondering about the Wrestling and Law and Order stuff on Sci-Fi...
Here's one for ya...
It's bad enough that the Weather channel is commercialized to the point of pissing me off something severe...
I don't mind too much the specialized programs like Storm Stories, It Could Happen Tomorrow, etc... but Damn it...
When I have a huge Thunder Cell above my fucking house, trees bent sideways, I'd like to know if there is a Tornado watch or Warning...
The other day I sat through 10 minutes of commercials on the weather channel. By the time the radar maps showed up and the warning polygons were shown the fucking storm had already passed by.
Assholes...
Then there is TLC and TDC... Rarely get anything I wanna watch on them anymore... Usually some crap about raising babies...
Everything I want to watch is on Science channel which I don't have in my package.
The wife was bitchin at DirectTV and I told here it ain't here fault these idiots are programming shit that either doesn't belong on the channel or is in a fucking stupid time slot.
Well, TLC has always had the two programming "shifts." There's the daytime programming, mostly oriented towards parents (mothers, specifically) and others around that group, and then the evening programming schedule, which is the content that we enjoy the most.
And ther weather channel always has the emergency broadcast message which, if you *are* inside of a severe storm watch, will be pushed to the top of the broadcast. You'll get the ticker at the bottom and the dohickey that pops up otherwise in the other place. :P

There was to much sex and violence, not enough good old fashion space battle action and drama. I mean like with the guys wife riding a cylon what is this deperate housewives???? who cares about her hip twist??? How could she get away with the 2 face stuff without anyone noticing, just not enough sense to it all.

Well, I'm not too worried about Cylons dying... ;)
I'd put Ellen in the supporting character category so the term "pretty big" doesn't really apply, so far she didn't have much to do.
Overall, killing off characters isn't something RDM worries too much about. I think we've seen worse (Caine, Pegasus XO, Billy, etc...).
That was different. Cain was killed because, well, that was simply what was expected. Billy's death was written in because the actor could not confirm he would be available. RDM and the gods that be have said that late this season at least one major character was going to bite it and by episode 3 one of the supporting characters was toast. Oh and yes, one of the cylons will die permanently or get "boxed" too this season too. So yes cylons can die :D
Just a small question I'm stuck with free to air in my country so I'm not up to date but has BSG shown any other commonwealth combat ships. I've got to say they've mentioned in dialogue theres more than battlestars out there. If they haven't I would suggest it might be a oppuntity for the fans to submitt some suggestions. Also if they show other ships will they stick to the current naval conventions as a guide ie. destroyer, cruiser.
I don't know much about naval ships so I can't really comment also I don't remember much about the original series either to know if they've done it previously.

It's not unusual for sci-fi authors to draw on current events. Star Trek mirrorred the cold war for quite some time before shifting to more modern themes. The good-versus-evil construct is used even more often.
Babylon 5 was no exception.
It's the first time I read that about the cast. Most of them are pretty young so I don't see them as not liking sci-fi and by that I don't mean the original BSG show which was cheesy by any standards. :D
When I saw the prisoners being transported in those trucks and made to get off in the middle of nowhere I knew that there would be some shooting because it mirrorred an event seen in WW2 movies about concentration camp escapees being executed for their escape attempt.
When I saw the Dean Stockwell character dressed all in black, I was reminded of the Gestapo character seen in the Indiana Jones movie as well of course many WW2 documentaries.
The parallels exist, and the show creators know this very well too and that's why everyone experiences the show differently because we all see it with our own experiences and cultural baggage. Someone who doesn't have that baggage will just see a man in black, and prisoners getting off a truck.
I agree though, the suicide bombers aren't doing it for me either, I think they crossed a line there too. I mean, it's a line even JMS didn't cross. But when you look at BSG, it crossed quite a few lines since its beginning. Where else have you seen a baby being killed in cold blood (other than the news perhaps)? There are quite a few examples of this during the earlier two seasons. RDM isn't pulling any punches. Not everyone will appreciate that for sure.
Spoiler: Its obvious from the previews that Lee decides to jump the Pegasus to New Caprica to help out the Admiral, it also looks like we might lose the Pegasus. I tivo'd last nights episode and rewatched the previews and I'm almost certain its the Pegasus blowing up between a pair of Cylon Basestars (very similar to when we last saw Cmdr Cain's Pegasus in BSG:TOS). So Im wondering how we can lose the Peg, and not lose Lee. I dont see Lee abondoning his ship, and I dont see Ron Moore making the ship automated in any sort of way. Could it be Lee Adama that dies next week? Its obvious that they will go back to the fleet searching for Earth, but they cant put some of these characters back into thier old positions without feeling like a reset button, we should never see Lee in a Viper again. Starbuck, maybe but not Lee. So where do they go from here?

I'm not using spoilers because this is not a spoiler, its speculation and its in the previews anyway. If Pegasus is going to show up and get destroyed my guess it will probably be left crippled and be scuttled after the rescie. Somehow all the ships and resources from Pegasus need to be fully transferred over to Galactica. That was always the intention of the writers to solving Galacticas pilot and fighter shortage.

Just my point of view concerning some of the issues brought up in this post concerning SciFi shows and the life of Battlestar after this season.
The two are linked in that as sci-fi has moved away from its core of sci-fi programming so has BSG. It is more political then sci-fi at the moment. I have nicknamed it Battlestar Iraq. Occupation? Suicide Bombings? Also I have read so many times that some of the main cast will quit if the show gets to sci-fi. What? It is a science fiction show, did they not understand what they were siging up for? Now I agree with most that sci-fi shows strengths are about the characters, but the setting and the things that make it sci-fi are what make it great. I don't mind references, themes, and concpets to small point from the real world but the whole point of sci-fi shows is to give us an espace from the real world for a hour or so. I thought BSG was great the first season but it is seems to me to be leaving the sci-fi behind to mimic our current world events which I see enough of that on the news. I want Sci-Fi channel and BSG to return the sci-fi content and stories that take my mind off the real world. Otherwise it can end this season cause I don't want a forth season that has even less sci-fi then it lacks now.
Ok, you can all go back to your normal lives...lol! My rant is done...
I'm sorry, I don't want to sound rude but I don't think you've been paying attention since day one. Before the first scene of BSG was even shot the whole idea behind the show was to mimic current events very closely. Starting in the miniseries by an absolute surprise attack so unthinkable its cought everyone with their pants down (911). In the very first episode they shoot down a passenger liner suspected of being infiltrated. That was a direct reference to F-16s being scrambled in 911 to intercept the airliners. In a later episode we have them interrogating a prisoner with no legal rights. Does that sound familiar yet? And that was just season one. Now finally we have suicide bombers. Thats what BSG has been all along.
You know I've been checking the scifi boards and stuff and it surprises me how seriously people can take things and also saddened by how people really don't know shit about history. The New caprica story line is first and foremost a direct reference to a Nazi occupation rather than the Iraq occupation. Still not very original but there it is. It also amazes me how some people are so retarded they believe that the colonials are a direct mirror of the US military. The colonials fleet does not represent the current US! Apparently people still don't get it but BSG has been from the beginning all about blurring the lines. The colonials are not the good guys and the cylons are not the bad guys. Nor is it the other way around. Its all about shades of grey. With the suicide attacks RDM is not justifying what suicide bombers are doing as some people seem to believe. He's just depicting it as the act of desperate people in desperate times. Suicide attacks have been around for as long as there has been war or occupation in one way or another. If BSG had been done in 1946 it would probably be the colonials ramming their ships against the cylons, but Babylon 5 already did that :D.
Oh and about the cast quitting if the show goes too sci-fi, thats actually from something Olmos said and I think you took its taken a bit out of context. The comment was that if the show stops being about the story and the drama and more about the four eyed alien of the week or something like that he'd quit. As a matter of fact EJO said that he would do scifi for the rest of his life if it was well written.
One thing I am getting tired of is hearing how BSG gets darker and darker. You know, if you were in the situation your planet was nuked, you had 50,000 survivors on the run I think things would be definition not be very rosy. Actually, I think things in BSG are pretty peachy because in reality such a situation would be a heck of a lot nastier. And don't those people ever run out of booze and smokes? I swear they must have a liqour distillary vessel that survived in the fleet. I mean, how many mini-bottles of liqour could there have been in colonial one during the flight to Galactica? :D

Yes its the SS Jack Daniels its one of the seldom seen ships of the fleet, and the most visited since Cloud 9 went tits up. :D
The booze Saul and the others were drinking looked like moonshine to me. No matter how tough it gets humans always find time to distill some booze :D
I've used spoiler tags below as some of my comments might ruin it for some but its more a reply to Vorlons in my Heads comments.
I find the suicide bombings situation uncomfortable. But thats what its supposed to do. Its not pleasent. You can see it with the way Roslin reacts to Saul. She knows the bombings have an effect but she can't bring herself to support them. Morally its just plain wrong but it does cause massive disruption to the enemy.
BSG has gotten darker but it has to this in order to drive the message home. The gloves are off and this is not a fluffy show with kittens. I really like the way it tackles issues we face in the world today. If it didn't we'd be moaning saying its all made up crap and not relevant to anything . And if a certain percentage of people believes it mirrors the US Army being all high and mighty, well they did vote a christian fundamentalist into office! Its rediculous but hardly surprising really that such a view has been taken from the show. Its sad that the real message of the show can be missed by so many.
So yes I agree it is all about blurring lines. There is no good or bad side here. Both sides have committed terrible acts. Thats what happens in war sadly. Each side will believe it holds the moral high ground but that is impossible. RDM demonstrates this very effectively.
For me BSG is the best thing on tv at the moment. It knocks Lost for six and pips ahead of Prison Break (but that show is still very good).
They have a lot of bottled liqour. And where are they getting the raw material for so much moonshine? I suppose they distill spacecraft fuel. Screw 151 rum, they have tylium ale! In any case of fuel shortage, just pour into Viper gas tank. Beware, do not drink and smoke at the same time :D
Hmh, we have been cheated... And no one cares?
Spoiler:
In the end of Precipice (II) Cally rans like hell thru the bushes and the shots are fired. However in Exodus, Cally stands at open ground where Chief tackles her down, now the shots are fired.
I mean, its the small things that matter the most. You cant lower the quality by adding more hot chicks or more bare back in the show, I hope they actually understand this.

BSG is above these issues in the sense that it deals with the bottom line, which is that there are soldiers and civilians dying for ideas and money.

Hey anyone notice that the woman taking care of Sharons baby is the sheriffs deputy from Eureka? She's pretty hot in Eureka. I just noticed that and thought I'd point it out becuase I have nothing better to do.
For those hwo haven't got season 2 on dvd yet I've just ordered it from CD WOW for £12.99!!!! Region 2 version. Its an amazing price, every where else is £26+.
To find it you need to look under their pre-xmas sale as it doesn't come up under search. Its on page 11 of the dvd offers :)
